Chapter 1: The Girl Who Never Spoke
The wind howled through the towering pines, carrying with it the scent of earth, rain, and something darker—something restless. Night had settled over Blackwood territory, thick and watchful, as if the forest itself was holding its breath. Elena Whitmore stood at the edge of the clearing, her fingers curled tightly around the hem of her worn sweater. She shouldn’t have been here. Everyone knew better than to wander near the Alpha’s grounds after dusk. But Elena had never been like everyone else. She tilted her head slightly, listening—not with her ears alone, but with something deeper. A presence pulsed faintly in the air, unfamiliar yet strangely calling to her. It made her chest tighten, her heartbeat quicken. A bond. Her breath hitched, though no sound escaped her lips. Before she could retreat, a low growl cut through the silence. Elena froze. From the shadows, a massive black wolf emerged, its golden eyes glowing under the pale moonlight. It was larger than any wolf she had ever seen—muscles rippling beneath sleek fur, power radiating from every step it took. Alpha Damon Blackwood. Even without words, everyone knew him. Elena’s heart pounded violently as his gaze locked onto hers. For a moment, the world seemed to still—the wind, the trees, even her fear. All that existed was the burning intensity of his eyes. Then something shifted. The growl died in his throat. The wolf stilled. And Elena felt it—stronger this time, undeniable. The bond snapped into place. Damon’s body tensed, his ears flicking back as confusion flickered in his gaze. Slowly, almost cautiously, he began to approach her. Each step felt like thunder against the quiet forest floor. Elena couldn’t move. Her legs refused to obey, rooted to the ground as if the earth itself held her in place. When he was only a few feet away, the wolf stopped. They stared at each other. Then, in a blur of motion, the wolf shifted. Bones cracked, fur receded, and in seconds, the beast was gone—replaced by a tall, broad-shouldered man. Damon stood before her, his dark hair slightly tousled, his sharp features hardened by years of command. His golden eyes, however, remained the same—piercing, intense, and now filled with disbelief. “Mate,” he said, his voice low and rough. The word hung in the air between them. Elena swallowed, her throat tightening painfully. She tried to respond, tried to say something—anything—but as always, no sound came. Damon’s brows furrowed. “Did you hear me?” She nodded slowly. Relief flickered across his face—only to vanish just as quickly. “Then answer me.” Silence. Elena lowered her gaze, her hands trembling slightly at her sides. Damon’s expression darkened. “Look at me,” he ordered. She hesitated, then obeyed. Their eyes met again, and something twisted in his chest. The bond pulsed faintly, urging him closer, urging him to claim what was his. But something wasn’t right. “Say something,” he demanded, impatience creeping into his tone. Elena’s lips parted, her chest rising as she forced herself to try. But no matter how hard she pushed, no words came. Only a faint, broken breath escaped. Damon’s jaw tightened. “You can’t speak?” he asked, his voice colder now. Elena shook her head. The silence that followed was heavier than before. For a long moment, Damon said nothing. He simply stared at her, his gaze searching, calculating. This—this was impossible. The Moon Goddess did not make mistakes. She would not bind him, an Alpha, to someone weak. To someone… broken. A muscle in his jaw twitched. “Who are you?” he asked. Elena hesitated, then slowly raised her hand, tracing letters against her palm with her finger. E… L… E… N… A. He watched her, confusion flickering across his face before understanding dawned. “Elena,” he repeated. She nodded. Damon exhaled sharply, running a hand through his hair. This was not what he had expected. Not what he had prepared for. His mate was supposed to stand beside him, to lead with him—not hide behind silence and lowered eyes. “This is a mistake,” he muttered under his breath. Elena’s chest tightened. Even without hearing the words clearly, she understood. She always did. Her fingers curled into fists, nails digging into her palms as she fought to steady herself. She had known, deep down, that this moment would never be what others dreamed of. No warmth, no joy—just disappointment. Still, the bond tugged at her, soft but persistent. Damon looked at her again, his expression unreadable. “You’re coming with me.” Her eyes widened slightly. He didn’t wait for her to respond. Turning on his heel, he began walking back toward the pack house, his steps sure and commanding. Elena hesitated. Every instinct told her to run. To disappear back into the shadows where she belonged. But the bond… it pulled at her, stronger with every step he took away from her. Slowly, reluctantly, she followed. The pack house loomed ahead, large and imposing, lights glowing warmly through its windows. Voices and laughter drifted from inside, a stark contrast to the tension coiling in Elena’s chest. As they approached, the door swung open. A tall man with sandy hair stepped out, his sharp eyes immediately landing on Damon. “Alpha, we were starting to wonder—” He paused when he noticed Elena. Curiosity flickered across his face. Damon didn’t stop walking. “Lucas.” The man straightened instantly. “Yes, Alpha.” “I found my mate.” The words sent a ripple of shock through the air. Lucas’s gaze snapped back to Elena, disbelief clear in his expression. “Her?” Damon’s jaw clenched. “Yes.” Elena felt the weight of his tone, the hesitation hidden beneath it. Lucas studied her for a moment longer before stepping aside. “You should bring her inside.” Damon nodded curtly and continued forward. Elena lingered for a second before following him into the house. The moment she stepped inside, the room fell silent. Dozens of eyes turned toward her—some curious, some skeptical, some openly judgmental. Whispers began almost immediately, spreading like wildfire. “Is that her?” “She’s his mate?” “She looks… fragile.” Elena lowered her gaze, her chest tightening with every word she couldn’t ignore. Damon stopped in the center of the room, turning to face the pack. “This is Elena,” he announced. “My mate.” The silence that followed was deafening. Then someone laughed. It was soft, barely audible—but it was enough. Damon’s eyes darkened dangerously. “Enough,” he snapped. The room fell silent again. Elena stood there, small and still, wishing more than anything that she could disappear. But deep inside her, beneath the fear and the silence, something stirred. Something ancient. Something powerful. And for the first time in a long time… it was awake.
