Chapter 4: The Cracks in Silence

913 Words
Damon caught her just before she hit the ground. Her body felt light in his arms—too light—but it wasn’t her weight that unsettled him. It was the sudden surge of energy that shot through him the moment their skin touched. It wasn’t just the bond anymore. It was something deeper. Wilder. Uncontrolled. Elena gasped, her fingers clutching his shirt as her eyes widened—not in fear, but in shock. Her lips parted, and for a split second, Damon thought— A sound. But it didn’t come. Instead, her body tensed, and a wave of something unseen rippled outward from her. The air shifted. The wind picked up. The trees around them rustled violently, though there had been no breeze moments before. Damon’s grip tightened. “Elena.” Her name left his lips more as a warning than a call. But she wasn’t looking at him. Her gaze had gone distant, unfocused—as if she was seeing something far beyond this place. Then it hit. A flash of images—not his, not entirely hers, but shared. A forest, darker than night. A voice echoing through silence. “She will not speak… until she must.” Damon stiffened. Elena’s body jerked slightly in his arms, her breath coming in sharp, uneven bursts. “No,” she whispered. The sound was faint. Fragile. But it was there. Damon froze. His heart skipped once—hard. “You—” he started, his voice rough. “You just—” Elena’s eyes snapped back to him, panic flooding them as she realized what had happened. She had spoken. Her hand flew to her throat, her fingers trembling as if she didn’t trust it. “No…” she tried again, but this time, the word came out broken—barely more than air. Still… it was a voice. Damon stared at her, something shifting behind his golden eyes. “You can speak,” he said slowly. Elena shook her head quickly, stepping back from him. The moment his hands left her, the air settled, the strange energy fading just as suddenly as it had come. But the silence didn’t return completely. Something had changed. “I heard you,” Damon pressed, his voice firmer now. “You said ‘no.’” Elena’s chest rose and fell rapidly. She shook her head again, more desperately this time, as if denying it would undo what had just happened. But they had both heard it. And so had the bond. It pulsed between them, stronger than ever. Damon took a step closer. “Elena.” She flinched. That alone made him pause. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then, slowly, Elena reached for the notebook he still held. Her fingers trembled as she flipped it open and wrote quickly, her handwriting uneven. It’s not supposed to happen. Damon read it, his brows drawing together. “What isn’t?” She swallowed hard, then wrote again. My voice. His gaze snapped back to her face. “What do you mean, it’s not supposed to happen?” Elena hesitated. Her grip tightened on the pen. Then she wrote: I lost it when I was a child. Damon’s expression darkened slightly. “Lost it? How?” Her hand stilled. For a moment, it seemed like she wouldn’t answer. Then, slowly— I don’t remember. Damon didn’t like that answer. Not one bit. Before he could question her further, a voice called out from across the grounds. “Alpha!” They both turned. Lucas was approaching quickly, his expression tense. Behind him, a few pack members lingered at a distance, clearly having noticed the disturbance earlier. “What happened?” Lucas asked, his eyes flicking between them. Damon’s jaw tightened. “Nothing you need to worry about.” Lucas didn’t look convinced. “I felt it too. That wasn’t normal.” “No,” Damon agreed quietly. “It wasn’t.” His gaze shifted back to Elena. She stood there, small and shaken, her fingers still wrapped tightly around the notebook. But Damon wasn’t looking at her fear. He was looking at something else. Something hidden. “You heard her,” he said suddenly. Lucas frowned. “Heard what?” Damon didn’t look away from Elena. “She spoke.” Silence fell. Lucas blinked. “That’s not possible. She—” “I heard it,” Damon cut in. “Clear as day.” Lucas turned to Elena, searching her face. “Is that true?” Elena froze under his gaze. Then, slowly… she nodded. Lucas let out a quiet breath, running a hand through his hair. “Well… that changes things.” “Yes,” Damon said, his voice low. “It does.” Because now, the mystery had only deepened. A girl who couldn’t speak— Suddenly finding her voice the moment their bond flared beyond control. It wasn’t coincidence. It wasn’t normal. And Damon didn’t believe in either of those things. He stepped closer to her again, his presence firm but not threatening this time. “We’re going to figure this out,” he said. Elena looked up at him, uncertainty flickering in her eyes. He held her gaze. “Because whatever this is,” he added quietly, “it’s not just about you.” The bond pulsed again, as if agreeing. Stronger. Deeper. Unavoidable. And somewhere, far beyond the safety of the pack grounds… Something stirred. Watching. Waiting. For her voice to return completely.
