CHAPTER 1
The feeling of enmity crept over me as I walked out of the living room with one destination in mind - School. My eyes caught sight of him late, giving me no chance to react and change my direction. Defeated, I set my gaze on the ground wishing with all my heart to be ignored by him. It seemed my request got reviewed and rejected. "Hey! Where the hell are you going to, Harmony?" His cold tone caused me to flinch. Wincing, I trembled under his scrutinizing gaze. "Melvin, I am going to school," I answered timidly, then added. "We have important lectures today." "Oh, and you are dressed like this? Like a slut?" His tart tone forced me to take a final look at myself. I wasn't dressed like a slut. It was just a harmless plaited skirt and a crop top which absolutely fitted well on my slim body. But of course, Melvin will never see that. He was one of the cruelest people on earth, probably because he considered himself a soon-to-be Alpha, which in my opinion was definitely an impossible dream. "No. I mean… This dressing is really decent. We all wear this there." I tried elucidating patiently even when it was obvious that I was losing my temper, and slowly trying to tame my surging fury. "In my opinion, you are a shameless slut and just trying to slowly reveal it. Now get your ass inside and change!" He ordered me. "You have long gowns. You have a long skirt. Wear them..." "But I will be looking like a clown in those clothes. I don't even want to look like a nerd. I want to be really different!" I argued pointlessly. Gosh! This was one of the things I despised, the inability to decide without the interference of Melvin, who happened to be my stepbrother, or Luciana, my step-sister. "Are you seriously questioning my order?" His eyes dimmed, sending sheer fear down my spine. "No. I was only trying to..." I stuttered, lost on what to say. With a silent glare, I hopped back into my room. Hot tears rolled down my cheeks as I reflected on my life. Being without a mother had its disadvantage which I grew to realize but was helpless to change it. Entering the room, I slammed the door behind me as my wardrobe welcomed him. Everything in my closet seemed less appealing at that moment. Pondering on what to wear with my arms crossed around my petite breast, I opted for a reddish gown that stopped midway. Luckily, I would leave the house before Melvin or Luciana, the devil saw me. I concluded. Sneaking out, I quickly stepped out of the house much to my happiness but it was short-lived when I felt a presence behind me. Who was it? Swiftly, I glanced behind but saw not a soul. Perplexed, I increased my steps and felt the intruder following my trail. Cold sweat broke out on me. Moonstone was one of the safest places on earth, what then was happening? I slowly broke down in a cold sweat just as a figure double-crossed my path. "Hey!" "Oh, my world!" I shrieked, holding my chest tightly. "What the heck was that all about?" I half yelled, careful not to hurt my fragile heart. "You scared ten years of my life! What the heck came over you?" "Look, I wasn't trying to scare you but then you are a coward and a weakling who gets scared easily. Anyway, don't you think it was high time you got yourself a mate? You are what? Over Eighteen years no mate yet and no shifting. Are you sure you are not cursed?" His statement irked me immediately. Kelvin was my best friend and the one who didn't mind speaking his mind despite who was involved. His bluntness had attracted me to him but at this juncture, I was certain I hated him being straightforward. "Look, Kelvin. I don't know why you are saying this or why you are bothered over this but please don't bring it up again. I have a mate," I confessed halfheartedly. I wasn't supposed to reveal it yet until after the full moon but damn my big mouth for blabbering just to save my face from Kelvin's goad. "You have a mate? How ridiculous!" He mocked, taking a step forward as he walked behind me. Silence reigned mightily as we walked together. Certainly, different thoughts were going through his mind. Thought he was scared of spilling to avoid spiking me. "When did it happen? And who is the mate?" "Well, it happened about two full moons ago. And his identity should be kept anonymous." "Oh really? You have a mate we didn't know about?" Calista blurted loudly as she joined us. Frightened, I glanced pleadingly with her hoping she would get the message and shut the hell up. The building stood out proudly like a mansion. Different vehicles drove in, releasing people I never knew existed until a moment ago. "Who is your mate?" Calista jolted me out of my reverie. I glanced at her, "No one is supposed to know about this yet! So for that reason, there is no mate." Her eyes widened, begging me to reveal more but hell I couldn't subject myself to that so I kept mute, acting indifferent toward the request. A sudden loud shriek from students had us reeling back. Student all troupe out of their classes and hostel to get a comfortable and better view. Confused, "What's happening?" I inquired from Kelvin whose attention had not swayed a bit. The sneer on his face revealed the disapproval on his mind. "Those are the popular boys in college. More like the big men. They have influence and are the most intelligent students in the Department of Medicine and Surgery." Cool. "All of them are intelligent?" I asked with doubt, certain I had heard wrongly. "Yes," Kelvin affirmed. I was still lost in thought about the new information I got when my nostrils inhaled a familiar cologne. I couldn't pinpoint who it belonged to so I quickly gazed up to search for that individual. The excitement I felt at that moment was uncontrollable. It left me jerking with desire. Desire to see him. And then it happened, a pair of green eyes stared at me silently. His cold gaze felt like an assessment, making me tremble under his gaze. "You!" He snarled, forcing me to stare up at him. My breath ceased. My heart accelerated at the sight of him. Right before me was my mate, Vincent. The one I got betrothed to. My happiness skyrocketed at his proximity. "You b***h! How dare you wear the same color of cloth as me?" Not giving me a chance to respond, he raised his hands, connecting them to my cheeks in what was a dirty slap. My heart shrieked. The little confidence I had died instantly as I held my cheeks pathetically, trying my damn best to believe it was only a dream, hoping not to wake up and not a reality but the effort proved difficult to manage. "I didn't..." I stuttered but stopped to swallow the hard lump in my throat. There was nothing as annoying as watching your mate raise his hands on you. "I didn't know you would be coming here. And besides, I am your mate!" Loud gasps around me made me realize what I had done. Vincent was one of the medical, popular students Kelvin was talking about. "Mate?" He laughed mockingly. "It's high time, you banish that nonsense thought completely. I can never marry a nerd, and not just a nerd, a stinking smelling b***h like you!"
