Chapter 1

The forest glimmered beneath the pale light of the full moon, its silver glow painting the dense greenery in hues of shadow and mystery. I walked the familiar path back to the packhouse, my steps heavy and my thoughts turbulent. Nyra, my wolf, paced restlessly in the corners of my mind. Her growls were low and seething, the echo of my own simmering fury. “Why are you hesitating, Lila?” Nyra’s voice slithered through me, sharp and relentless. “We should confront them.” I tightened my grip on the edge of my coat, the coarse fabric biting into my palm. The packhouse loomed ahead, grand and imposing, but tonight, its warmth felt like a lie. The betrayal I had witnessed still burned behind my eyes, an image seared into my soul. Ethan. My mate. My other half. I’d felt the pull from the moment we locked eyes three months ago—a connection so deep, it was soul binding. I had dreamed of the life we’d build together. Only now, that dream was shattered, scattered like glass at my feet. I’d found him in the east wing earlier tonight, his hands gripping Celeste’s waist, his lips trailing the curve of her neck. Their bodies moving in perfect, traitorous harmony. My perfect sister. The pack’s golden girl. I had watched, frozen and disbelieving, as their laughter rang through the air, cruel and mocking. The pain of the mate bond unraveling was unlike anything I’d ever experienced. It was physical, a searing wound that left me gasping for air. Nyra howled in agony, her pain feeding my own. “They will pay,” Nyra snarled, her voice like fire. “Ethan. Celeste. Both of them.” I reached the packhouse doors, my heart pounding in my chest. Pushing them open, I stepped into the bustling main hall. The pack members were gathered, the atmosphere lively with chatter and laughter. They didn’t notice me slip through the crowd, my presence as unremarkable as ever. I wasn’t Celeste, after all. Celeste, with her flowing golden hair and infectious charisma. She was the star around which the pack revolved. I had always been the shadow, the quiet girl content to fade into the background. But now, the shadow was rising. I spotted Ethan near the bar, his dark hair tousled, his smile easy and disarming. The sight of him made my stomach churn. He was speaking to a group of warriors, his charm effortless. Celeste stood nearby, her laughter ringing like a bell. She leaned close to him, her hand brushing his arm. My jaw tightened. “Lila.” I turned to find Darius Vale standing behind me, his piercing grey eyes locked on mine. The Alpha of the Moonlit Forest pack commanded attention without effort. His presence was magnetic, his broad shoulders and chiselled features exuding power. He was a man accustomed to control, to dominance. “Alpha,” I said, dipping my head in respect. My voice was steady, but my heart raced under his scrutiny. “You look troubled,” he observed, his tone low and rich. “Is something amiss?” I hesitated, the weight of my secrets pressing against my chest. Did he know? Had he seen the betrayal that had unfolded within his own pack? “No, Alpha,” I lied, meeting his gaze. “I’m fine.” His eyes narrowed, his wolf’s presence brushing against mine, probing. I held my ground, refusing to let him see my cracks. “If you ever need to talk,” he said after a moment, “my door is always open.” “Thank you,” I replied, my voice softer now. “I’ll keep that in mind.” He nodded and moved past me, his commanding presence leaving a lingering impression. I watched him go, an idea forming in the back of my mind—an idea as dangerous as it was enticing. Nyra’s growl echoed approvingly. “Yes. Him.” I turned my attention back to Ethan and Celeste, my anger boiling over. They thought they could humiliate me? They thought I would crumble and fade away? They were wrong. That night, I made my decision. If Ethan wanted to betray me, I would show him the true meaning of betrayal. And Darius Vale, with his power and allure, would be my weapon. The following days were a blur of planning and calculated steps. I spent more time in the Alpha’s presence, finding excuses to seek him out. He seemed intrigued by my sudden interest, though he masked it well. Darius was not a man easily swayed, but I could see the flicker of something in his eyes when he looked at me. Something raw and primal. “Lila,” he said one evening as I brought him a report on the pack’s defences. “You’ve been quite diligent lately. I appreciate your efforts.” “Thank you, Alpha,” I said, offering a small smile. “I want to be of use to the pack.” He studied me for a moment, his gaze penetrating. “You’re more than you let on, aren’t you?” “I don’t know what you mean,” I replied, feigning innocence. “Don’t play coy with me, Lila,” he said, his voice dropping. “I see the fire in you. You’ve been hiding it, but it’s there.” His words sent a thrill through me, but I masked my reaction. “Perhaps you’re imagining things, Alpha.” “Perhaps,” he said, though the smirk tugging at his lips suggested otherwise. “But I’ll be watching.” As I left his office that night, my heart raced with a mix of anticipation and fear. Darius was dangerous, a predator in every sense of the word. But so was I. The turning point came during a pack gathering under the full moon. The forest was alive with music and laughter, the air thick with the scent of pine and earth. I stood at the edge of the clearing, watching as the pack mingled and danced. My gaze found Ethan and Celeste, their closeness sending a fresh wave of anger through me. “You look like you could use a drink,” Darius’s voice came from behind me. I turned to find him holding out a glass, his eyes glinting in the moonlight. “Thank you,” I said, accepting the drink. Our fingers brushed, and a spark ignited between us—a spark that left me breathless. “You’ve been avoiding the festivities,” he observed, his tone casual. “I’m not much for crowds,” I admitted. “Neither am I,” he said, a hint of a smile playing on his lips. “But sometimes, it’s necessary to make an appearance.” Our conversation flowed effortlessly, his sharp wit matching my own. For the first time in weeks, I felt a sense of ease, a distraction from the pain that had consumed me. But as the night wore on, the tension between us grew, an unspoken connection simmering beneath the surface. When the gathering began to wind down, Darius turned to me, his expression serious. “Walk with me,” he said. I hesitated, then nodded, following him into the forest. The night was quiet, the only sound the crunch of leaves beneath our feet. We walked in silence for a while, the distance between us electric. Finally, he stopped, turning to face me. “Lila,” he said, his voice low. “What are you doing?” “What do you mean?” I asked, though I knew exactly what he was referring to. “You’ve been circling me like a vulture,” he said, his eyes blazing. “Do you think I don’t see it?” My heart raced, but I held his gaze. “And if I am?” He stepped closer, his presence overwhelming. “Then you’d better be prepared for the consequences,” he said, his voice a growl. The tension between us snapped, and before I could think, his lips were on mine, claiming me with a ferocity that left me breathless. I surrendered to the kiss, my anger and pain melting into a maelstrom of passion. This was no gentle connection; it was raw, consuming, and dangerous. When we finally broke apart, his eyes searched mine, his expression unreadable. “You’re playing a dangerous game, Lila,” he said, his voice rough. “So are you,” I replied, my voice steady. And in that moment, I knew there was no turning back. My path was set, and the consequences would be mine to bear.
