Chapter 2

The days after the full moon gathering passed in a haze of tension and unspoken words. The kiss I had shared with Darius lingered in my mind, a haunting reminder of how far I was willing to go to claim my revenge. It was both a thrill and a torment. I couldn't stop replaying the moment, the intensity of his touch, the way his dominance seemed to melt the icy shards of betrayal embedded in my soul. Ethan and Celeste remained blissfully unaware of the storm brewing. Their laughter still grated on my nerves, their closeness a constant reminder of my humiliation. But now, I had a weapon of my own. Darius Vale—Alpha, untouchable, commanding—was mine to wield. Or so I thought. The first time Darius summoned me to his office after that night, I felt Nyra’s excitement ripple through me. “He’s intrigued,” she purred. “And he should be. Let’s see how far we can push him.” I found him seated behind a massive oak desk, the room dimly lit and heavy with the scent of leather and cedar. His gaze lifted as I entered, and I felt the familiar pull of his presence—magnetic, all-consuming. “Lila,” he said, his voice smooth but edged with something I couldn’t quite place. “Come in.” I stepped forward, closing the door behind me. “Alpha,” I greeted, dipping my head. His eyes lingered on me, sharp and assessing. “We need to talk.” “About?” I asked, feigning innocence. The corner of his mouth twitched, as if he could see through my act. “About this game you’re playing,” he said, leaning back in his chair. “Whatever it is you think you’re doing, you’d better tread carefully.” I bristled at his tone, my temper flaring. “Game?” I echoed, my voice sharper than intended. “I’m not the one playing games, Alpha.” He raised an eyebrow, his wolf flickering in his gaze. “Aren’t you?” We stared at each other, the tension between us crackling like a live wire. I wanted to lash out, to tell him that this was all a calculated move, that I was using him as a pawn in my plan. But there was something about the way he looked at me, as if he could see through every layer of my facade, that made the words stick in my throat. “You think you’ve figured me out,” I said finally, my voice quiet but steady. “But you have no idea who I am.” He rose from his chair, his movements slow and deliberate. When he came around the desk, I forced myself to hold my ground, even as my pulse quickened. He stopped mere inches away, his towering presence making me feel small and exposed. “Then show me,” he said, his voice a low growl. “Show me who you really are.” My breath hitched, the challenge in his words igniting something within me. For a moment, I considered backing down, retreating to the safety of my walls. But Nyra’s voice urged me forward, her feral energy fueling my resolve. “Take control,” she whispered. “Make him see you.” I stepped closer, closing the distance between us. “You’ve seen nothing yet,” I said, my voice daring. His eyes darkened, a flicker of surprise crossing his features before it was replaced by something deeper, more primal. He reached out, his hand brushing a strand of hair from my face. The gesture was almost tender, but the heat in his touch betrayed his restraint. “Careful, Lila,” he murmured. “You’re playing with fire.” I tilted my head, meeting his gaze head-on. “Maybe I like the burn.” His wolf growled, the sound low and dangerous, and for a moment, I thought he might kiss me again. But instead, he stepped back, his expression guarded. “You’re more trouble than I anticipated,” he said, his tone almost amused. “You’ll survive,” I replied, turning on my heel and leaving the room before he could see the tremor in my hands. That night, as I lay in bed, the weight of my choices pressed down on me. The path I had chosen was fraught with risk, and the lines between revenge and something deeper were beginning to blur. Nyra’s restless energy mirrored my own, her thoughts a chaotic swirl of desire and defiance. “He’s drawn to us,” she said. “But he’s holding back. Push him harder.” “And if it backfires?” I asked. Nyra’s growl was soft but unwavering. “Then we face the flames.” The opportunity came sooner than I expected. A rogue attack on the northern border had left the pack on edge, and Darius called for a strategy meeting with the senior warriors. As the Beta’s daughter, I had a seat at the table, though my input was rarely sought. Tonight, however, I was determined to make myself heard. The meeting was held in the war room, a cavernous space lined with maps and weapons. Darius stood at the head of the table, his commanding presence filling the room. Ethan was there, too, his gaze darting to me every so often. Celeste sat beside him, her expression smug. “We need to strengthen patrols along the eastern border as well,” I said, my voice cutting through the chatter. “The rogues are using it as a weak point.” All eyes turned to me, some sceptical, others curious. Darius’s gaze lingered, a flicker of approval in his expression. “Lila makes a good point,” he said, silencing any dissent. “We’ll implement additional patrols immediately.” Ethan’s jaw tightened, and I couldn’t resist the small surge of satisfaction that coursed through me. For once, I wasn’t invisible. As the meeting concluded, Darius caught my arm, his touch sending a jolt through me. “Come with me,” he said, his tone leaving no room for argument. We stepped out into the cool night air, the forest alive with the sounds of crickets and rustling leaves. He didn’t speak at first, his expression contemplative. “You surprised me tonight,” he said finally. “Good,” I replied. “Maybe now you’ll start seeing me for who I really am.” He stopped, turning to face me. “And who is that, Lila?” I met his gaze, my heart pounding. “Someone who won’t be ignored any longer. Someone who won’t let others decide her worth.” His eyes softened, a rare vulnerability breaking through his stoic exterior. “You’re stronger than I gave you credit for,” he admitted. “And you’re more human than you let on,” I countered. A low chuckle escaped him, the sound warming something deep inside me. “Careful, Lila. You might start liking me.” I smiled, the first genuine smile in weeks. “Maybe I already do.” For a moment, we stood there, the unspoken connection between us growing stronger. And in that moment, I realized that my plan for revenge was no longer just about Ethan or Celeste. It was about me—about finding my own strength, my own path. Darius reached out, his hand brushing mine. “Whatever you’re searching for, Lila, I hope you find it.” “I think I’m starting to,” I said softly.
