Chapter One
Marina's POV
As he emerged from the Pack stream, soaked to the bone in nothing but his pants, I couldn't take my eyes off him.
Every detail about him captivated me; his towering height, piercing icy blue eyes and short, curly raven-black hair.
My gaze lingered on his well-chiselled chest, rock-hard abs and broad shoulders, leaving me utterly mesmerised.
He embodied perfection. He was the manifestation of my dream man, and my unrelenting desire for him consumed my every thought.
Locked in a gaze, I hoped he'd walk up to me and tell me that he felt the same way, that I took his breath away only to have my fantasy cut short by Rita, my best friend.
“You know that you can never have Alpha Dunne, right?” She reminded me, yet I couldn't help but wish.
“But why can't I just have him? Is it because I'm only an Omega?” I questioned, grappling with the unfairness of the situation.
“That…” she answered, rubbing her hand on my back. “He's your sister's boyfriend too.”
“What? Mia?” I turned to face her, shocked by what I had just heard. “She has all the love of my parents and all of my peers. Him, too? Why does she get to have it all?”
Well, that was two months ago and today, we all gathered at the Pack Square, to witness the selection of the Luna Queen by Alpha Dunne.
The entire place was crowded as both mated and unmated wolves showed up in their numbers. Yet, the sound of the cool winds which blew softly against the trees that surrounded the Square was all that could be heard save a few birds that flapped their wings as they flew past us.
It was Alpha Dunne's 30th birthday; the age when male wolves were able to scent their chosen mates. Females were able to do that much earlier at 22 years, except, of course, they were marked.
But I was only 21 and coincidentally, Alpha Dunne and I shared the same birthday. Not like it meant anything. I doubt anyone but Rita knew that it was my birthday.
All eight elders sat on their elevated chairs which had golden arms, each having a wooden stick with a wolf-shaped golden handle as they gestured to Alpha Dunne who stood in front of them in a flowing red regalia, to go ahead and make his choice.
As he made his way into the crowd, everyone watched on with piqued interest to see the lucky woman whom he would pick as his Luna. Me too. I glanced at the front row where Mia was and surprisingly, he walked past her like she wasn't there.
As she stared at him in disbelief, I noticed there was something different about him. His eyes weren't blue. They were golden. His movement too, lacked the familiar poise I always knew him to have. A strange aura surrounded him, leaving me a tad perplexed.
Suddenly, a hand jolted me back to reality from my thoughts and I quickly turned to see Alpha Dunne, standing right before me.
“Mate!” Alpha Dunne called out, with his eyes fixed on mine.
“What? That's impossible,” I protested and tried in vain to get his hands off mine.
Although I liked him, there was no way I was going to let him have me. He was my sister's boyfriend. It was her that he should have picked, not me. Surely, he was mistaken.
“Mate,” he called out again and without warning, he pulled me close and drove his fangs into my neck as I screamed in pain.
He had marked me and although I wasn't of age to scent my mate, I felt a strange, sudden rush in my blood that I couldn't explain; an overwhelming feeling that I could barely contain. The sweet smell of cinnamon filled my nostrils as I shut my eyes, engulfed in absolute euphoria.
“You're mine now, mate,” he said, with a proud look on his face.
He pulled me by the hand and we made our way to the elevated platform where the elders sat. Gasps and whispers filled the air as the entire guests gawked at us, shocked to their bones.
Could I blame them? I, too, was shocked. I never imagined that the Alpha would pick a lowly Omega like me as a mate.
From the corner of my eye, I looked at Mia, keen to avoid eye contact as she placed both her hands on her head in disappointment. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she glared at me in fury. If she could kill me right there, she would. I understood the way that she felt.
One of the elders made his way to us; Elder Hanz, he was called. Dressed in long, white apparel, he had patches of grey hair on his near-bald head and with a small, red ribbon which he held in his right hand, he tied our hands and made us face the crowd.
“Today, in the presence of all of you and by the will of the Moon Goddess,” Arya, the Priestess, began with a screeching voice. “I declare, Alpha Dunne and Marina joined together as husband and wife. Behold, wolves of the Whitehouse Pack, your Luna Queen, Marina!”
I was married to my chosen mate. The Moon Goddess had finally granted my earnest desire. Yet, despite the excitement I felt within and the joy that my wolf, Ariel felt as she leapt inside of me, it just didn't feel right.
As was the tradition, he took me straight to the Palace. Newlywed wolves were expected to mate after being marked. Everyone else had to give them some privacy for a month, including the servants. It was called ‘Honeymoon.’ But everything changed when we got into the house.
“What the hell?” He asked, quickly letting go of my hand as we stepped into the large throne room which was painted all white with two, long gold-coloured sofas on each side and a transparent, glass centre table that had a bowl on it with assorted fruits. “What just happened? It was supposed to be Mia, not you. How could I ever choose you as my mate?”
I opened my mouth in shock, wondering what he was talking about. It was him who made his way to me back there. It was he who held my hand and called me his mate. It was he who made me his by marking me. Right?
Then, I saw it. His eyes. They weren't golden anymore. They were blue once more. That was when it became clear to me what happened.
“Don't look at me that way,” he said, with a squint as I touched the mark on my neck. “It wasn't I who marked you. It was my Wolf. I didn't wait all these years just to end up with an Omega. I cannot accept you as my mate.”
“Then let me go. I don't want to be with you either,” I defiantly voiced, even though a part of me didn't want to. “Let me go. Pick my sister instead and make her your Queen. It's her who owns your heart, right? I don't want any of these.”
“I wish it was as easy as that, Marina. Then, I'd have rejected you lowly Omega, but don't worry. It might not be now but I will get the chance to reject you and I will not hesitate,” he voiced. “Enjoy the loneliness and suffering until I finally reject you and take your sister, my lover, as my Luna Queen!”
I bit my lower lip wondering what he meant by those words. If he wasn't going to reject me, then I deserved to know why.
I recalled the words of my twin brother before he went missing. “Dreams and nightmares are just different sides of the same coin,” he'd always tell me.
Now, it made sense. Alpha Dunne was my dream and my nightmare still. He was all I wanted in a fated mate and all I didn't want. A radiating sunshine and a terrible monster.
He took a few steps toward me until he was just a few inches in front of me. “I will never love you, Marina. I will never accept you. That mark you have means nothing to me,” he reaffirmed without blinking. “Yet, we must live here in this house together. Go home. Pack your things and bring them here. You have three days.”
