The girl who arrived with silence
The rain had already soaked the school gates before she arrived. Blackwood Elite College stood tall and arrogant, iron gates wide open like it was daring anyone brave—or foolish—enough to step inside. Luxury cars lined the driveway. Laughter echoed. Power lived here. Ariella Hayes stepped out of the taxi with only one suitcase and a heart that felt heavier than everything she owned combined. She paused. Not because she was scared. But because memories had a way of ambushing her when she least expected it. Her fingers tightened around the strap of her worn-out bag as thunder rolled across the sky. Rain slid down her dark hair, clinging to her lashes, soaking into her sleeves—but she didn’t move. This is it, she told herself. Don’t shake. Don’t cry. Don’t look weak. Weak girls didn’t survive places like this. The driver cleared his throat awkwardly. “Madam… we don reach.” She nodded, voice stuck somewhere in her chest. “Thank you.” When she stepped forward, the gates closed behind her with a loud metallic clang. It sounded too much like a coffin sealing shut. Eyes followed her immediately. She felt them—sharp, curious, judgmental. Students slowed their steps. Conversations dipped. Someone whispered. “Who be that?” “New girl?” “She no look rich sha…” Ariella kept her head straight, spine stiff, expression unreadable. Inside, her pulse screamed. She hated being seen. She hated being new. Her shoes splashed against the marble floor as she entered the main building. The smell of polished wood and expensive perfume filled the air. Everything was pristine. Controlled. Perfect. She was none of those things. The principal’s office was cold. Not temperature-wise—emotionally. Principal Hawthorne barely looked at her as he flipped through her file, glasses perched low on his nose. “Ariella Hayes,” he read. “Transfer student. Final year.” “Yes, sir.” “You’ve moved schools… frequently,” he noted. Her throat tightened. “Yes, sir.” He glanced up at her then, eyes sharp. “We don’t tolerate troublemakers here.” Ariella met his gaze steadily. “Neither do I.” Something flickered across his face—interest, maybe. Or suspicion. “Good,” he said. “Your class is SS3-A. Escort yourself.” That was it. No welcome. No smile. Just dismissal. The hallway buzzed with noise as she stepped out. SS3-A. Elite of the elite. She stood outside the class door for a moment, breathing in. Breathing out. You can do this. Her hand reached for the handle— —and the door swung open from the inside. Laughter spilled out. Loud. Careless. And then… silence. Every head turned. She walked in slowly, aware of how out of place she looked. Her uniform was neat but plain. No designer bag. No jewelry. No forced confidence. Just scars hidden beneath calm eyes. The teacher adjusted her glasses. “Yes?” “I’m the transfer student,” Ariella said quietly. Murmurs erupted instantly. “Ohhh.” “Another one?” “She’s pretty sha…” “Wait—this one is different.” The teacher nodded. “Introduce yourself.” Ariella turned to face the class. Dozens of eyes stared back at her. Rich kids. Powerful kids. Kids who had never known hunger or grief or loss that ate you alive at night. “My name is Ariella Hayes,” she said. “I’m here to finish the term. That’s all.” Nothing more. She didn’t smile. She didn’t explain. She didn’t apologize. That alone made them uncomfortable. Then she felt it. That strange pull. Like someone was watching her not with curiosity—but with recognition. Her gaze shifted. Back row. Corner seat. He was leaning lazily in his chair, one arm draped over the back, tie loosened, blazer unbuttoned like rules didn’t apply to him. His face was calm, almost bored—but his eyes… Dark. Sharp. Dangerously attentive. Lucien Black. She didn’t know his name yet. But her chest tightened anyway. Because those eyes weren’t curious. They were assessing. Like he already knew she didn’t belong. Like he could see straight through the walls she had spent years building. Lucien’s lips curved—not a smile. A warning. Something cold slid down Ariella’s spine. Stay away from him, her instincts screamed. But fate had never listened to her before. “Take the empty seat,” the teacher said. The only empty seat was beside him. Of course it was. Ariella walked down the aisle, every step heavy. She could feel his presence growing stronger, closer—like a storm waiting to break. She sat. Their arms brushed. Electric. She stiffened. Lucien leaned closer, his voice low, amused. “You don’t look like you belong here, Transfer Girl.” Her jaw clenched. She didn’t look at him. “I don’t remember asking.” He chuckled softly. “Feisty.” She finally turned to him then, eyes cold. “And you talk too much.” For the first time, something real flickered in his eyes. Interest. Dangerous, dangerous interest. As the class resumed, Ariella stared at the board—but her mind drifted far away. To blood on the floor. To screams she could never forget. To a promise whispered through tears. I’ll make them pay. She didn’t come to Blackwood to make friends. She didn’t come to fall in love. She came for revenge. And sitting beside her was a boy who looked like he might ruin everything.
