Against Our Fate

*Vivienne's POV* I shield my eyes with my right hand and squint to look up at the towering building. Apparently, this engineering company is where my sister, Madelyn works. I came to pick her up today since her car is in for repair. She said she will take a cab but I insisted since I was already in the area. But she was supposed to be here ten minutes ago... "Vivienne!" I hear a yell and see a swift figure approaching me. She comes closer and smiles apologetically. "Mads! I was waiting for quite some time. Was there some work left?" "I am so sorry, our boss had called for a meeting. I got caught up in that." "Oh, it is all right. Come, let's go. We have lots to do." There is a party at our house today. Well, maybe not exactly a party. Sort of a memorial service for our late mother, who had died almost ten years ago. It's been a long time since then and today is her 49th birth anniversary. All three of us, me and Dad and Madelyn, still aren't completely normal from her sudden death. I doubt we will ever be. We make our way to the parked car and get in. Rolling out of the parking area and moving to the main road, a sudden thought strikes me. "By the way, is Michael coming?" Madelyn starts and I notice her blushing from the corner of my eye. I grin. "He is, isn't he?" I tease her, my eyes on the road. "Yeah, maybe." "Well, I take that for a definite yes. When is your wedding by the way?" The flustered sound she makes makes me laugh. "We are not getting married! We are just- oh, for God's sake, Vivienne!" Because now I am laughing out loud. I turn to face her and am about to tease her again when things happen in quick succession. Her eyes widen and she opens her mouth to scream. Horns blare perilously close and I turn around. The truck is not slowing down. I try to swerve around frantically. I am dangling dangerously from the monkey bars. My mom catches me when I fall. I am cycling on the road and I fall. My dad wipes my tears and cleans my wounds. I am coming home after a day of bullying. My dad hugs me and tells me it is alright. I am crying after my first breakup. My mom takes me out and lets me forget about the guy. I am seeing Madelyn go through the same things as me. The same people comfort her. I am seeing the casket go down. I am seeing our family break. I am seeing it come back together. I am seeing my life flash across my eyes. I am wishing I said 'I love you' to everyone. I am wishing I completed that project in my office. I am wishing I threw out the dried flowers. I am wishing I finished the book I was reading. I am wishing Madelyn lives. I hear someone scream my name.
