CHAPTER 4

1312 Words
Two days had passed since my conversation with Mrs.Isabella, and I had been grappling with the weight of her proposition. As I was busy at work, my phone suddenly rang, displaying Mrs. Isabella’s name on the screen. "Hello, Mrs. Isabella," I greeted, trying to sound composed. "Hello, Hannah," she replied warmly. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything important." "No, not at all," I assured her. "What can I do for you?" "Well, I just wanted to check in and see if you've made up your mind about the contract marriage," she said directly. "The paperwork is ready, and if you're ready to go ahead with it, I'd like you to come directly to my house instead of going to work tomorrow." Her words took me by surprise. The reality of signing the contract suddenly hit me, and I felt a mix of anxiety and excitement. I took a deep breath before responding, "I haven't completely made up my mind yet, but I'm leaning towards accepting. I just need a little more time to think." “I understand, Hannah. Take all the time you need, but do let me know as soon as you've made a decision," Mrs. Isabella said with understanding in her voice. After the call, I couldn't concentrate on work. My mind was filled with thoughts of the contract, Karen’s well-being, and the enigmatic Xavier. I knew this decision would change my life forever, and the weight of it all felt overwhelming. As I got back from work, exhaustion weighed heavily on my shoulders, but I knew I needed to share this impromptu decision with Emma, and I knew it would come as a shock to her. We settled in the living room, and Emma handed me a cup of tea. Taking a deep breath, I finally mustered the courage to speak. “Emma, I have something important to tell you." Emma looked at me with concern in her eyes. "What is it, Hannah? You look like something's bothering you." I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to begin. "Well, you know how I've been struggling with Karen’s medical expenses and our toxic home environment with my stepfather." Emma nodded, understanding my struggles all too well. She had been there for me through thick and thin, and I trusted her implicitly. “I had a conversation with Mrs.Isabella, the bookstore owner," I continued, my voice trembling slightly. "She offered me a contract marriage to her son as a solution to our financial problems." Emma’s eyes widened in surprise. "A contract marriage? Wow, that's unexpected. How do you feel about it?" "I'm conflicted, Emma," I admitted. "On one hand, it would provide financial security for Karen’s medical needs, but on the other hand, it's such a huge decision to make." Emma reached out and placed her hand on mine, offering comfort and support. "I can imagine how tough this must be for you, Hannah. It's not an easy choice to make." "I know, and that's not all," I continued. "The wedding is happening so quickly. Mrs. Isabella asked me to come to her house tomorrow to sign the contract." Emma’s eyes widened even more, clearly taken aback by the urgency of the situation. "Tomorrow? Hannah, that's so sudden! Have you made up your mind?" "I'm leaning towards accepting, Emma," I replied honestly. "I know it's a risk, and it's unconventional, but it might be the best option for Karen and me. I just wanted to talk to you about it before I make a final decision." Emma squeezed my hand reassuringly. "I trust you, Hannah, and I believe you'll make the right choice for you and Karen. Whatever you decide, I'll support you through it all." Her words meant the world to me, and I felt a sense of relief knowing that I had her unwavering support. As I shared the details of my conversation with Mrs. Isabella and the impending marriage, Emma listened attentively, offering advice and understanding every step of the way. The following day, I finally mustered the courage to call Mrs. Isabella. "I've made up my mind. I'll go ahead with the contract marriage." Her voice brightened with excitement. "I'm glad to hear that, Hannah. Meet me at my house, and we'll go to the court together. Xavier will be there as well." I swallowed nervously at the thought of facing him again. He had been cold and distant during our first encounter, and I couldn't imagine him showing any interest in this contract marriage. As I arrived at Mrs. Isabella's mansion, I couldn't help but marvel at the sheer grandeur of it. The sprawling estate was nestled amidst lush gardens and tall oak trees, giving it an aura of enchantment. The mansion itself was a masterpiece of architectural beauty, with elegant columns and intricate carvings adorning its exterior. Mrs Isabella greeted me warmly and assured me that everything would be alright. Together, we entered the luxurious car that was waiting for us and set off to the courthouse. Upon our arrival, I spotted Xavier standing stoically by the entrance. He looked as aloof as ever, making me wonder if he even cared about this arrangement or its significance. As we entered the courtroom, I tried to suppress my nerves, reminding myself of the reasons I had chosen to go ahead with this contract marriage. Karen’s well-being and the hope for a better future kept me focused. The judge began the proceedings, and as we signed the contract, I couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. The reality of my decision hit me - I was entering into a marriage that was purely for business, yet it held the potential to change both our lives. As we stepped out of the courtroom, Xavier maintained his cool and distant demeanor. He seemed in a hurry, and I struggled to keep up with his brisk pace. “Hannah, get in the car. My driver will drop you off at your apartment to pick up your belongings " he said, his tone brisk and business-like. I reluctantly got into the car while still trying to get his attention.“ Drop? Are we not both going to your apartment together when I’m done packing so we can at least discuss ?" I asked, trying to break through his cool exterior. He glanced at me briefly, his expression guarded. "I have a business meeting to attend, Hannah".The business meeting that Xavier had to attend was a crucial one with potential business partners. As the heir to the family's business empire, Xavier had numerous responsibilities and commitments that demanded his attention. The meeting had been scheduled long before the contract marriage proposition arose, and it involved significant financial deals and high-profile stakeholders. As we drove, the atmosphere inside the car remained tense. I tried to make small talk, asking about his work and interests, but his responses were polite yet brief. It was evident that we were both trying to figure out how to coexist in this peculiar situation. As I arrived at my best friend Emma's place, relief washed over me. Seeing a familiar face after the emotional rollercoaster of the day was comforting. As Emma opened the door and saw me standing there, her eyes widened in surprise. "Hannah! What happened? How did the court hearing go?" she asked, her concern evident. I embraced her tightly, feeling a rush of emotions flood over me. "It's done, Emma," I replied, my voice wavering with a mix of relief and sadness. "The court declared our contract marriage valid." Emma's eyes softened as she held me close. "Oh, Hannah, I can't imagine how tough this must be for you." "I'll be okay," I said, trying to reassure both her and myself. "This contract marriage is just temporary, and I'll do everything I can to make it work for Karen and our future."
