That Night of Betrayal
That night, the heavy rain that was wetting the leaves on the trees was so silent around me that I could even hear the sound of my own breathing. I was standing outside that door in the silent rain, braving the loud storm of pain in my heart. What I saw was a scene that hurt my soul. That bouquet of flowers fell from my hands, its petals scattered a little as they fell. I didn't want to cry, but tears started falling from my eyes. I saw that the boy I loved, for whom I had done everything, had another girl in his arms... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * I was very happy that night because it was Mark's birthday. Mark and I had been dating for several years. I thought he was different from everyone else. I had connected the connector of my heart with him. I wanted that we should take this relationship much further and get married someday but perhaps fate did not permit it. My heart was beating a little faster today, I don't know why, but I wasn't feeling well. On the way to his house, I realized I had forgotten to take a flower. I reversed the car. I bought him flowers of various colours from the flower shop that he liked. I brought it and kept it in the car. I was very happy today. In one hand I held that bouquet of flowers and in the other a small velvet box which I held close to my chest. I was just running my fingers over that box. That box was very precious to me and I wanted to give it to Mark on his birthday. In this small box, there was an expensive watch, to buy which I had saved my salary for the last six months. Every penny was saved with a lot of hard work. I killed all my small pleasures, skipped lunch and worked extra hours Just so I can gift Mark his favorite best watch on his birthday. For me, it was not just a watch, it was my hard work, it was immense love which I have transformed into a watch through my hard work. But all my worries will vanish with Mark's happy smile when he sees the watch. With just this thought in mind, the journey from my house to Mark's house was completed. I had not told Mark that I was coming to his house. I made the three-hour journey just to surprise Mark. The night air was heavy and dark clouds were covering the sky as if it would rain any moment. A cool breeze was blowing and when the wind brushed past me, I felt something strange. When I reached Mark's apartment, I took out a spray from my purse which Mark had given me. While giving it to me, he had said that we will always be together. Thinking about that, I started smiling and applied the perfume. When I saw the door of the house, it was open. I thought he must have left it by mistake. I walked slowly and reached his bedroom, so slowly that he did not even realize that someone had come. There was a smile on my face, and I was thinking about how much joy Mark would have in his eyes when he would put that watch on his wrist. But as I placed my hand on the door handle, I heard a girl's giggle. My hands froze. I pushed the door open just an inch with my trembling hands. Seeing the view inside, my heart trembled. I pushed the door a little further with my trembling hands to be sure whether what I saw was real or a myth. Seeing what was happening in the dim light of the room, my breath stopped. Mark, who used to be in agony at my slightest caress, had become something else today, as if he had become some voracious animal. The strange girl was sitting in Mark's lap, Mark's hands wrapped around her waist with great helplessness and right. They were very close to each other, the distance between them had completely vanished. Mark was resting his head on the girl's neck and kissing her neck. The girl, with her eyes closed, was intoxicated and running her fingers through Mark's hair. The room was marked with perfume and the strong scent of the girl's body. The bed sheets were scattered in a mess, as if this game had been going on there for quite some time. Mark's shirt and that girl's clothes were lying in that corner of the room. That girl was whispering some dirty words into Mark's ears, Mark laughed at that—the same laugh that used to make me forget all my sorrows. I just stood there watching the spectacle. I saw Mark pulling the girl closer as if he wanted to take her into himself. Their breaths clashed, and the tremors in their bodies betrayed that this wasn't just a mistake, but a profound betrayal that Mark thought best to inflict on me. Mark held the girl's face in his hands and gave her a long, deep kiss on her lips. My heart was trembling, yet I was watching all this. I felt as if someone had put a melted mirror in my ear. That sight was so sharp that dust appeared before my eyes. The person whom I loved so much, he too had only used me. I couldn't close my eyes even if I wanted to. They were frozen. I wanted to see how far Mark had gone. I was forced to witness my own destruction. Mark was enjoying every moment on the bed with that girl, but tears were coming to my eyes. I tried very hard not to cry, but still, tears came out of my eyes.Their closeness was telling me that whatever promises Mark had made to me were all lies; he never loved me. After seeing that sight, a different pain arose in my heart. I tightly clutched the watch box that I had in my hand, for which I had worked hard day and night. Today that gift seems like rubbish to me. Mark, who till yesterday called me his life, was today searching for peace in someone else's arms. The flower bouquet fell from my hands and fell on the ground, its petals scattered. My throat felt like it was filled with pieces of glass, and I couldn't utter a single word. Without saying a word, I ran away from there holding the watch box that was a symbol of my hard work. My heart was completely broken and it seemed almost impossible to mend it. As soon as I came out of the building, it started raining heavily. I was just running, I don't know which way, but the cars were not stopping for me. Then suddenly I realized that I was completely drenched, my steps stopped in the middle of the road. It's a little difficult to describe in words what I was feeling, but to let out the pain in my heart, I started crying out loud. I saw the watch box in my hands and I got so angry that I threw it on the side of the road in one stroke. I was crying so hard that my soul trembled. I had never felt so much pain before. My tears and those thin drops of rain were flowing down my face. I had made up my mind that I would never look at him again. I turned and looked one last time at Mark's window, and then walked away forever into the dark, damp night. I decided to go so far away that I could never return to these bad memories.
