CHAPTER ONE

Good morning, Hope!

Good morning, Mrs. Davis! Is everything all right? How are you feeling today?

Thank God I am fine! I haven’t been better in a while. What about you? You left in a hurry last night.

Nothing you should worry about! Just work.

Oh, poor you! I wish people would stop breaking the law so you could rest a little. Thanks for saving us! You are an angel, Hope!

Say no more… I whispered. I am sorry, but I have to go now. I am very tired and I need to sleep. It was so nice to see you!

Once I entered my apartment I locked the door and threw my shoes on the floor. Mrs. Davis is the only neighbor I talk to. She is a 75 years old nice lady who lives next door. Since I moved here she always took care of me. She often brings me cookies or invites me over for dinner. Sometimes I wish I would not lie to her. She doesn’t even know my real name.

She is my only friend.

Yes, I know how that sounds but I don’t have time for friends. Besides I don’t need anyone. I am fine on my own.

After taking a hot bath I put on my pajamas and jumped in my bed. It’s been a long day and I need to get some rest. I will have to get up early tomorrow.

My phone rang and I answered with my eyes barely opened.

Hello?

Were you sleeping? It’s three o’clock, come on!

Hello to you too, Fed! I said full of irony. Any news?

Your invitation to the party has just arrived. I will send it to you tomorrow morning with the dress and everything you need, as usual.

Ok. Now if you don’t mind…

Actually, I do! Listen to me! Have you read all the instructions? Is there anything unclear?

Fed, look, I know that you want to make sure everything will be as planned and I really appreciate how careful you are, but now all I want to do is to sleep. Don’t worry, everything will be all right! I will call you in the morning!

Those being said I put my head on the pillow and fall asleep right away.

The next morning, a loud noise woke me up.

Oh, no! Not again! I almost yelled and covered my ears with my hands.

The neighbors living one floor above me are the noisiest people I have ever met! They are always pissing me off with their fights in the most inappropriate moments.

I jumped out of my bed and went straight to the door when I heard the bell ringing.

Good morning, Miss! I got something for you! Could you please sign here?

I signed the papers and went back to my room.

A red dress! This is gonna be fun! I said opening the box from Fed.

Hours later, I was ready to start my mission.

I took my suitcase and left to the airport. I’ve always had a thing for UK. I can’t wait to eat at my favorite restaurant and go shopping.

Before the takeoff I called Fed and gave him an update. Everything went fine at the airport.

I slept during the whole flight and I was still sleepy when I arrived at the hotel. I went out to buy some new clothes and had some time for myself. I bought a souvenir for Mrs. Davis as her birthday is getting closer, then I went back to my hotel room.

Almost 7 o’clock and I am ready. I am wearing a stunning long red dress without shoulders and with a slit on the right foot. My driver for the night was waiting for me in front of the stairs of the hotel. Fed took care of everything. I don’t know why but I am a little nervous. I feel something weird will happen tonight.

Miss Amelie Dubois? I nodded as a response. Follow me please! A pretty young lady told me.

She showed me my seat and left. I took a glass of champagne and scanned the room.

Where are you? I whispered walking among the guests.

Are you looking for someone? I heard a voice behind me.
