The Crisis
In winter, there was barely a difference between night and day as both had the same chill and tranquil weather, the only separating factor was the brightness of day.
That evening Melissa Stonecrop returned from work tired. She had resumed working with her parent's company only two years ago after graduation but by the time she did, SC housing and estates already faced a crisis. Melissa had only managed to do so little to keep the business above water but that particular evening the board had announced that the company was on the verge of bankruptcy.
Frustrated, Mel threw herself on the sofa in her room and let out a long sigh. At twenty three, she was already working like a twenty seven year old woman. The more she lay in the sofa, the deeper she sank in thoughts, disturbing thoughts of the news she received at work.
What better way to distract herself than a beautiful evening in the arms of her lover, Melissa thought to herself. In less than half an hour, Melissa had already run a shower and dressed up. She took one last look in the mirror as she carefully applied gloss on her pouty pink lips.
Melissa gave her hair a light bounce and decided she looked beautiful enough to appear before Keith in her short red dress that clung to her like a second skin.
The vibration of a phone got Melissa sprinting accross the room to where her phone laid on the nightstand by her bedside. Her expression fell slightly when she saw the caller; it was not who she was expecting.
"Girl, you had better have a reason for standing me up tonight. I have waited for your call all evening, what's the plan?." A young lady's voice sounded from the other end of the phone immediately Melissa accepted the call.
Melissa put her free hand on her forehead as she cursed underneath her breath. She had totally forgotten about the plans she had with Patricia her best friend.
"What's that? If you have something to say then cough it up already."
"Hi, Pat."
"Right, Hi. Like that answers my question. Where are you?" Patricia was barely giving Melissa room to think of a worthy excuse, not like she really needed one.
"I'm at home but currently headed to Keith's." Melissa replied in a steady voice as she awaited her friend's outburst. She put the phone on speaker and set it far from her ears.
"REALLY MEL?! YOU ARE REALLY GOING TO STAND ME UP TONIGHT FOR THAT —-" Patricia was already shouting but Melissa had to interrupt her before she carried on with calling Keith names.
"Stop it Pat! Don't do that. I love him and you know it so you have to respect him as well. That is if you love and respect me as your friend." Melissa's voice was always very gentle and sweet like she was and Patricia could never understand why or how her best friend ended up with Keith Lucario. For all Patricia knew, he was not a fair match for her beautiful friend.
"I'm sorry. I know." Patricia held her head in her hand seated in her room as she repeatedly ran her fingers through her long black hair to calm her nerves and stop herself from lashing out at her friend a second time.
"That's better and besides, I wouldn't stand you up for anyone. It's just that me and Keith," Melissa paused and smiled. The smile was more to herself since it was an audio call and Patricia could not see her expression but she heard it in her voice. Melissa was happy.
"Today is our two years anniversary. It's a special day for us, I'm sorry I forgot to tell you last week when we were making plans for tonight. I hadn't checked my calendar for today's date." Melissa's soft plea tugged at Patricia's heart and all she could do was sigh.
"Fine, enjoy your evening and make sure to loose that purity ring afterwards." Patricia laughed.
"This is the point where I hang up on your dumb ass." Melissa rolled her eyes and ended the call. Pat was not offended. She simply adjusted her plans for the night.
Melissa on the other hand, picked up the gift bags and flung the strap of her silver purse across her shoulder. She had stopped by the Mall on her way back from work and got a very nice wine and a twenty four karat gold wristwatch wrapped up as her anniversary gift to Keith.
She ordered a cab and could barely sit still in her room.
"I'm outside your home " the screen of her phone lit up with a message from the cab driver.
Mel hurried down the stairs and headed for the front door.
"Where are you going?" Marietta her stepmom questioned when she neared the door. Melissa stopped but had no intentions on starting an argument with Marietta.
"Out," Mel's response was short as short as how soon she wanted out of the house. Marietta opened her mouth to say something else but Melissa was faster.
"If you want to keep tabs on someone, start with putting a leash on your daughter. My mum did a great job so thank you for your concern but I don't need it." Melissa shut the door behind her not willing to hear Marietta's reply. She would deal with Marietta when she returned in the morning. That night was meant to be a happy one and Melissa was going to see to it that it remained so.
"We are here ma'am," the driver's voice pulled Melissa out of her reverie. She was lost in thoughts of the beautiful life she had with Keith. She was grateful she found herself a good and responsible man and she was certain Patricia would like him with time.
Mel found her way around Keith's apartment and went straight to the back door. He had sent a lovely anniversary message, a beautiful bouquet and a gift bag she was yet to unwrap to her office earlier that day so she thought to surprise him.
He had invited her out for dinner that night but she had declined with work as an excuse because she wanted to give him a surprise and make the night special indoors.
Mel unlocked the kitchen door of Keith's apartment with her spare key and slipped in very quietly. She took out the wine bottle and held it in her hand as she sashayed through the corridors to find her lover.
The sitting room was empty which was no shame to Melissa as Keith spent more time in his room or study. Study she decided as she journeyed up the stairs.
Mel was only a few steps to the study door when she heard funny sounds. For a second, Melissa's heart thumped faster but she calmed her nerves knowing Keith would be watching a movie. He always loved these movies with erotic scenes.
What Melissa didn't take into consideration was why Keith would be watching a movie in his study. It was secluded for work.
Melissa pushed open his study and the bottle in her hand dropped. The moanings and sounds flesh slapping against flesh was of more concern to her than the pieces of broken glass that pierced her exposed leg from the crash.
Keith pulled out of the blonde lady who had her legs spread out on his study table at the sound of the crash.
"Melissa!" Keith was shocked.
Melissa was going to cry as tears gathered in her eyes but when she saw the face of the woman on the table, she burst into laughter.
Was this some kind of joke or prank?
"Daphne?!" Melissa was more concerned about her younger sister on Keith's desk than her lover's betrayal.
"Mel. Leave her out of this, this is all my fault."
"Hell yes it is!, I never said otherwise. How could you Kay?" The tears Melissa held back ran freely down her cheeks.
"I swear Keith, if you had chosen Patricia it would have hurt less but you chose the one person who you knew always took everything away from me. Why?" Her palms were sweaty and her heart beat fast in her chest. It beat to the sound of many emotions; anger, betrayal, hurt and carelessness.
Melissa wiped her tears suddenly unaffected, she would not give Daphne more pleasure of seeing her hurt. All the while Daphne sat with a coy smile across her face.
"I love you but she can have you because I am not one to share, I'm generous like that." Melissa slipped the engagement ring off her finger and threw it at Keith before storming off the scene.
"Mel wait," Keith called after her but Daphne held him back.
"Let her go. She needs to be alone for a while, eventually she will be alright." Daphne said in a coquettish manner and Keith obliged.
If the winter breeze did not bite deep into Melissa's skin maybe she would have felt the pain less. She had been in so much of a hurry to leave the scene that she did not call a cab first.
While she walked the lonely street, she cussed herself for not driving. She wanted Keith to drive her back home by morning, that was why she took a cab from home to his apartment.
She fumbled with her phone and dialed SOS.
Mel was trembling, her body quaked with the sobs that raked through her and punctuated her sentence.
"Damn it Mel!, just stop the crying and tell me where the hell you are I'm coming to get you." The receiver scolded.
Melissa hung up and tossed the phone away.
