The Moonlight Bond

I alighted from the car before the company called ROM and I sigh out shakily to calm my nerves. After two long weeks of holiday, I am back to my continues my job. I headed in earnestly with my heels providing a repeated staccato sounds as I made to the pavement. I am clad in a smart suit skirt and pressed Lacy blouse. My long red hair is packed up in a ponytail and my face devoid of make up just like always. I am a beautiful lady. Emerald Grimes my name. A successful scientist of Twenty five years old. As I stepped into the reception Davey, my partner dashed towards me immediately. His dark jumble hair shining gloriously under the bright artificial light. " Oh my goodness! You are back emerald. I thought I won't survive when you took a whole two weeks off. So unusual of you " He said as we made our way to the lab. I am so ready to start my day Job. I have left many behind and I know my desk will be full already. I smile gently at my partner's Words. He is right. It is so unusual of me. " I am sorry. I promise that won't happen again. Trust me " I said with a determined smile and with the corner of my eyes I could see him grinning. I entered my lab office that minute and what I saw made me furrow my eyebrows. Everyone was busy with their computers and stuff. I was confused so I turned to Davey for help. " Mr Floyd is the only one who would explain better to you Emerald " He said instead and instantly I gulped. Floyd,yeah sure. I turned around abruptly and headed to Floyd's office lab. My heart is thudding now. I tried to keep my thoughts away from the incident but I couldn't. Floyd is my Boss and also my lover, no ex lover. He stopped being my man after I caught him with that sleazy secretary of his Hilda. When I got to the desk of Hilda, Floyd Secretary, I saw her busy with her computer. My eyes roamed around her body for some brief minutes and I couldn't help but set my jaw. She had always dressed so scantily. I never know she has a thing going on with Floyd but in the last three weeks I got to know. Good I caught them in the act. It would have been so hard to believe. " Good morning " I said with my professional tone. I will keep everything that has happened behind me now. " I am here to see Mr Floyd. Is he in please? " Hilda slowly turned to stare at me. A smirk appears at the corner of her lips but I ignore it. I passed that already. No taunting and humiliation for Emerald Grimes anymore. " Oh, Mr Floyd ? " She repeated dully. " Well he is in but I think he will still be dressing up. You know, tired and worn out for what happens between us a while ago " My heart dropped to my tummy after hearing this. Rapidly I blink to steady my emotions. After two weeks off I thought I would be able to sealed up everything but I think it's not done that way. " Thank you " I mutter softly and then walk into Floyd's door. After two firm knocks I heard him from inside telling me to come in. I step into the spacious office lab and look around. The air of familiarity seeped through my veins but I ignored it. I turn to see him, Floyd Alton in his lab coat. He was behind his computer as always but this time he wasn't punching on the keyboards. His hands were folded on his chest and he sat back while staring at the screen before him. Upon seeing me he was surprised. I managed to catch the expression before he erase it with a small smile. " Hey Emerald. You are back " He gets up to his feet and spread his arms, aiming for a hug but I was quick to hold out a hand to stop him. " Good morning Mr Floyd. I am here regarding what is going on in my lab office. My partner, Davey said you are in the best position to fill me in on what I have missed " At once Floyd's shoulder sagged and he dropped his hands beside him. " I have thought apologising over and over again will make you forgive me Emerald. I'm sorry. You know I am " His eyes say otherwise. I know he wasn't. I shook my head to pushed away the thought and then look up to him with clear eyes. " Will you please explain to me what is going on in ROM? Why is everyone so busy ? " After seeing that I wasn't talking about our personal life he gritted his teeth and walked to his window. " We are going to the jungle tomorrow Emerald " " Jungle? " I asked in confusion and Floyd nodded in the affirmative. " Why? What jungle? " " When you left for holiday we decided to do a research on a jungle where tourists usually claim a mythical creature resides and after an endless research, we learnt there is truly a living mythical creature in that jungle. A man who isn't human. He is different, vastly different from humans " Floyd walks away to the window to his desk where he turns his computer for me to see. " We believes him to be Arthur, an hybrid who could shift to a werewolf and human " My jaw flopped open and a sigh escaped my lips at the short video of this man whom Floyd had called Arthur. Goosebumps welcome my skin at this paranormal phenomenon and I gulp down hard. " He lives alone in the jungle? " " We believe so but we can't be sure. Tomorrow scientists will journey to bring him here where we will do thousands of research on him. He will be useful " " As what? " I suddenly asked. I tore my eyes away from the computer and stared hard at Floyd. " What are you trying to do with this mythical creature? " " I don't know. Experiments I'd say. What else can a scientist does to someone who shouldn't have existed in the first place? " I scoffed crazily before glaring at him. The thought of Floyd making one of his experiment on Arthur didn't sat well with me at all. " You won't torture a free creature. Why will you be interested in him anyway? Does the tourists complains Arthurhurt them ? " " No but... " " This mission you will be holding tomorrow is of no use then. You should allow Arthur To live his life. He loves it that way. Don't disrupt his perfect and beautiful life by interrupting it " I have just been carried away by my own agony and heartbreak. Just like Floyd is planning to do with this Arthur, he had interrupted my life and left me broken. By the last energy in me I won't let that become Arthur's fate. " Are you sure you do not need another holiday Emerald? I think you are finally going insane. Have you heard of Arthur before now? " " No " " So why are you so fierce about him? You can tell me if I failed to notice, are you a mythical creature too? Do you have any bond with him? " I couldn't reply. I only glare at him before looking away. My heart is thudding now. Floyd stares at me for sometime then finally he goes back to his seat and sigh. " You should prepare your Emerald backpack. You will be going to the jungle with us. Your holiday has ended anyway. You can't give any excuse now " This new information makes me surprised and displeased but there is nothing I could do. Floyd is my boss before he becomes my ex lover. I turn away from his handsome face as I accepted his order. " Yes sir. I will be prepared " I replied softly. I turn around at once and walk out before he says any words. When I pushed open the door I caught Hilda standing close and eavesdropping. A look of surprise appears on my face before my lips gives way to a mocking smile. " Pity " I muttered to the secretary before walking past her and towards my office lab. Hilda isn't hundred percent comfortable with me being with Floyd. Good. She should forever be agitated. " Hey Emerald " I heard the familiar voice of Clarence behind me and I turned to smile at him. We are on the same team. " Hi Clarence " " You are back, " He said with a grin. " Good, we got a mission " " I learnt about it already " " Good. The Arthur Experiment " I frowned slightly when I heard this. It sounds so ominous and strangely cruel to me. I wonder what Floyd has in store for this man Arthur. " So many things " Clarence replied to me as though he had read my thoughts. " Take a walk with me, I will show you " I obeyed Clarence immediately. He leads me into a large underground lab where many frightening tools which of course could kill humans at one go is been set for Arthur. " I feel so sorry for this mythical creature already but he will be useful. His blood stream or something " Clarence says but I didn't reply. All the while my eyes were filled with the object and multiple liquid sets ready in test tubes. What Floyd has in store for Arthur is so much more than Cruel. Strangely I feel sad and heartbroken already. I turn to a Large tube which is wide enough to contain a being. I know its purpose. Arthur will be trapped in it and he will suffer uncontrollably without any freedom. I quickly look away when my emotions reach it's limit and I blink rapidly to conceal my sorrow. " So who is going along with us Clarence? " " Uh ... Mr Floyd, you, me, two other scientist from the other team and Hilda " " Hilda? " I asked in confusion and surprise. " But Hilda isn't even a scientist " Clarence stared at my face for sometime before looking away. " She is Mr Floyd's wife, now Emerald. She can go anywhere she wishes with him " My lips parted and I am so ready to retort but no. I swallow hard the words and walk out of the underground lab. I bid Clarence farewell at the entrance and I returned to my office lab where I met Davey. I sat on my chair and immediately got to work. Thankfully I am able to get my thoughts off Hilda and Floyd throughout. I failed to go for lunch break because my desk is full. At long last when the sky was getting dark, Davey knocked on my desk and pouted. " Let's go home Emerald. You have to sleep early for the journey you are embarking on tomorrow " He said and I sigh. I obeyed him however. He is just like the younger brother that I do not have. I took my bag and shut my computer. I bid farewell to my pets in the lab and I walked out with Davey. " I do not know why you are not included in the mission tomorrow as well. It would have been fun if you could come along " I said to Davey as we both made our way out of the building. " Probably because you are too good " I laughed heartily at his words but my laughter soon dissolved when I saw Floyd ushering Hilda into his car. Those two are making up right before me as though it's nothing. Well it's nothing. I said my goodbye to Davey and we parted ways in the parking lot. The drive home is so short but I am relieved that it ends. I opened the door to my apartment where I live all alone and I flopped on the couch dejectedly. It has been an hectic day no doubt and I wonder what tomorrow holds. Arthur, who are you?
