Chapter 1
Katherine POV     I peeked through the window of the library and realised that it’s almost dark outside and I should be leaving. I hurriedly finished organising the books on the last shelf and headed to Mrs. Johnson’s office to handover the list that I had prepared.      Mrs. Johnson was the head of the library. She's a kind lady in her early sixties with greying hair and eyes full of love and wisdom. She treated me in an avuncular manner and I was very grateful towards her that she provided me with this job when I was in a desperate need even though I had no experience.       I knocked on her office door and entered. Mrs. Johnson was sitting in her usual place, behind her small desk.        “Good evening Mrs. Johnson," I said softly. "Here is the list of the books that need to be replaced and the books that need to be purchased.” I further added.     ”Ahh wonderful dear, thank you. It’s been only two months since you joined but I am really surprised at how efficient you are at your work.” she said smiling .      “No Mrs. Johnson, you are being too kind.” I said, smiling back at her. She always reminded me of my nana.  “It’s getting late dear, I’ll lock up the door, you may leave.” she said while peeking out of the window.   “Yes thank you, Mrs Johnson. Have a good night.”   “Good-Bye dear”, she smiled.     I went back to my desk, collected my purse and other belongings and left the building. As I was walking down the stairs, I thought about my sisters Amelia and Rose. They are all I have left in this world. After both my parents died in that horrific fire that burned their office down when I was only eight and Amelia was six, our Nanny Edith took care of us. She was a widowed lady who treated us just like her granddaughter Rose.     My eyes burned with tears thinking about Nana who died four months back due to Leukemia. Since then the responsibility of taking care of Amelia and Rose fell on my shoulders. I missed her terribly. I wish she was here.     My thoughts drifted back to my sisters. I wondered what they were up to. I’m sure Rose would have her nose stuck in some book and Amelia, I hope to God she doesn’t burn the house down while I am away.      Rose has always been the quiet one out of all three of us while Amelia on the other hand is the complete opposite who always gets into fights and troubles     While  standing outside the diner, I noticed a man dressed in all black standing across the street. There was something strange about him but I couldn’t seem to pinpoint, I chalked it up to fatigue, took out my phone and dialled Amelia to ask what they wanted to eat for dinner.   “Hey sis," came her cheery voice and without even giving me an opportunity to speak she went on,      "We ordered three Margherita pizzas, some fries and a bottle of coke. Okay byeeeee.” and the line went dead.       "Did she really hang up on me?" I mumbled irritatedly. I can't believe she actually did that. What am I supposed to do with this girl! God she has the ability to get under my skin every damn time.      Putting the anger at the back of my mind, I started walking towards home. I felt like someone was watching me. The hair on the back of my neck stood up. I turned around and saw the same guy a few feet away from me. Anxiety started crawling up on me.       Without looking back, I fastened my pace. I turned back after a while and saw no one behind me. Maybe he wasn’t really following me. Maybe I'm thinking too much. How paranoid have I actually become! I exclaimed to myself. I shook my head and calmed myself when I realised that I had almost reached home. I quickly climbed the stairs to my apartment. Once I reached my floor, I took a minute to catch my breath. Loud music and giggling coming from the hallway put me into action. I didn't like my neighbour nor this apartment. The neighbourhood is not that safe but this is what we can afford with my meagre earnings.      As soon as I opened the door to my house, I saw a mess, Ugh! The state of my house was unbelievable, papers strewn everywhere, empty cartons lying around and loud music was coming from Amelia's bedroom. What happened here while I was away? Did a tornado hit our home? This has Amelia's name written all over it.     God! This girl, I expected nothing less from her though. Organised and Amelia don’t go well together.       “Ameliaaaaaaa”, I screamed. She strutted out of the bedroom. “God! Why are you screaming like a dying crow?. Perhaps you might be hangry. Let’s get some food in you. Rose dear, put your book down and get your ass in here.”      “Amelia”, I said in a rather stern tone, "you need to grow up. I can’t take anymore of your childish behaviour. I would really appreciate it if you helped around the house. At Least put your degree to good use, find an actual job instead of lazing about on the couch and watching Netflix all day.” I seethed, trying to control my boiling anger.     “You do realise that I am not the one to sit through a 9 to 5 job right.? I can't do that, that's not me, Still I'm trying Kat,” Amelia smiled dryly, while Rose was looking at us wordlessly.      Looking at her Rose face, I decided to let it slide and changed the topic for now. I don't want her to have any sort of distress because of Amelia or me. She will be off to university in a week and I don't want her to get distracted by all this stuff when she should be focusing on her studies.         “Have you gotten all that you need for college?” I questioned Rose .     “Yes, but Kat it’s really not necessary for me to go.. I mean I can take a drop year and help you around. I bet I can get a job at the diner.”     I immediately cut her off ”You don’t need to worry about all those things. Amelia and I will take care of everything.” I  smiled at her while taking the pizza out of the boxes and started eating. I didn’t realise how famished I was until that first bite touched my lips. I closed my eyes in delight as the delicious flavours exploded inside my mouth.  I wish I could have this Margherita pizza forever.            ~•~•~•~•     After we finished our dinner, I told them both to clean the place up and I went to take a shower. I grabbed a clean towel from the cupboard and headed towards the bathroom.      Warm water felt amazing on my skin and I felt relaxed. I closed my eyes to relax further but my mind wandered over to the man in the black suit. Who was he? Was he really following me? Something about that situation made me feel strange. I got goosebumps just thinking about the whole situation. Maybe I am just imagining things because of that TV show American Horror story which Amelia has forced me into watching. I didn't like it at first but Amelia insisted and now I'm hooked. Why can't she just like hearts and flowers like I do? We are both siblings yet we can never agree on the same thing. Why doesn't she agree to get a job is beyond my understanding? How am I supposed to make ends meet? She is not willing to step up. Rose is  still a little child. She needs to make good use of the scholarship that she's received and finish her education. Whew! I feel like my mind is going haywire with all these thoughts. I need to stop overthinking. Everything will be fine. One day at a time babe.      After a while, I turned off the shower and grabbed the towel and wrapped myself securely.     I stepped out of my tiny bathroom only to realise that the house was quiet.. too quiet in fact. What are both these girls upto? I thought to myself as I walked into the living room only to find Amelia and Rose standing on top of chairs. What on earth are they up to at this hour? What sort of weird game is this? What are they five years old?      “What the hell are you guys doing?” I questioned, trying to calm my anger because clearly they have not cleaned up the living room.      ”We are playing a game called, "There is a mouse in the house and we don’t know where it went.!!!!!! "Amelia said sarcastically, holding a broom in her hand while inspecting the floor.      I was confused at first but as soon as her words registered in my mind I screamed my lungs out and jumped on the couch. “Amelia please do something!” fear clearly evident in my voice.      “Thanks sister for your precious but unnecessary instruction, I was totally helpless without you.” she replied with a hint of sarcasm in her voice. Rose chuckled hearing her.     I rolled my eyes at them. Amelia knows I'm absolutely terrified of mice. Yet she still loved to laugh at my misery. I mentally made a note to get back at her someday. Amelia dear you will not be spared, I inwardly smiled.       After about a half hour of struggling and a helluva screaming, Amelia finally managed to trap the mouse. She went to throw it out. She came back and winked at me, "Good work guys! What a fun way to end the day."     ”Thanks to Amelia we got rid of that god awful creature,” Rose giggled while picking up the last of the trash from the living room.     ”I think you should thank Kat for giving us a good show when she almost lost her towel while running from the mouse. It was quite entertaining,” Amelia laughed, showing her perfectly white teeth.     I lunged the pillow at her face which made her stop laughing, she threw the pillow back at me but she missed the aim and all three of us started laughing until tears started rolling down our eyes.      I looked at their smiling faces and realised no matter how monotonous my life seems, I have these two idiots to keep me entertained. I guess this is what life is. We are sure to get our ups and downs but in the end I know we'll always stick together. They are all I have left. I will do anything and everything in my power to keep them safe. That's what Nana would have wanted. I hope I make her proud. ~•~•~•
