Chapter 1
Erine was like some would call a "lone wolf", she liked it more as an "independent wolf".
Gamma of the Moon tear drop pack she was amongst the best fighter on the land.
When she was 18 and had just returned from her 2years world tour, her alpha asked her if she would become the beta, but she refused as that implied being constantly at the pack house near the alpha and she would have less liberty. She was a free spirit and unlike other wolves, who loved and needed to be in a pack, she didn't feel that need that strongly.
She truly loved her pack, as they adopted her when she was 3. They found her one night on the doorstep of the pack house, trembling and crying partially covered in blood who wasn't hers.
The pack who was known as fair took the girl in and raised her as their own, but while growing up, they noticed something... She smelled different than other pups, she was part wolf and part something else.
When she was 7 her wolf talked to her for the first time, her name was Alaya, usually humans would gain their wolf counterpart around the age of 15 and at 16 would have their first shift but she didn't, even though her wolf linked her mind for the first time when she was 7years old and stayed with her in her mind; she didn't have her first shift before turning 19. This was pretty late for a wolf.
She grew up in the pack house under the care of the new young alpha, Maverick, who had just turned 20 at the time. He took her in and raised her as his own; soon discovering she was good at fighting, smart and caring.
When getting older it seemed more obvious she was different from the others around; she liked to be more by herself, curious about everything, while the other pups grew up to be more settled in the pack, she wanted to be a free bird.
So when she turned 16 and asked the alpha if she could go on a travel trip for 2years to discover the world and gain new fighting skills, he didn't refuse her as he knew she needed it and was strong enough to venture on her own.
She learned a lot within those 2years, and made new encounters, some friendly, some more threatening; she also learned from a coven of witches she briefly stayed at that they could feel she was part witch.
This greatly shocked her as wolves were most of the time only mated to other wolves and on rare occasions to humans.
She had read some stories about werewolves being mated to witches, but everywhere she looked it was said a taboo, something that shouldn't be, forbidden and extremely rare.
Usually, when it happened the wolf rejected the witch directly without a second thought.
So a child between the 2 was very unlikely, she was told it had already happened in the past centuries, but the child was directly killed as soon as born.
Lucky for Erine, the coven of witches she was staying at wasn't threatening and just wanted to give her the knowledge of what she partly was, although they didn't know what kind of Witch she could be as there was a lot of different kind of witches.
This at least helped Erine understand her a bit more difference even if a lot of things remained a mystery, she also decided to keep that part of knowledge secret as she could be in danger or even bring danger to her pack if someone knew.
She also tried to see if she could have some powers, but all she could do was sense other witches around her; this was still a pretty useful trick.
After her long journey, she came back to the pack and Alpha Maverick, who had just his beta retired because he was also his father's beta, asked Erine to become the new beta. He needed someone wise and strong as beta and she would have been the perfect match.
But the girl refused, telling her she was loving her liberty way too much. Maverick then proposed to her to be the Gamma, even going as to give her a lovely house close to the forest and not too far away from the pack house, stating that she would be freer but still had to train the warriors 3 days a week, assist to important meetings and be there when needed.
To that she agreed, Maverick was known as a fair and strong alpha around the land, she saw him more as a fatherly figure. She couldn't refuse to be a help to the pack as they treated her as their own.
"ERINE!" Boomed a voice in front of her.
She snapped out of her thoughts and looked at the man in front of her, he was tall and muscular, around his forties, and he had silver eyes and short brown hair.
He was actually leaning against a big wooden desk, his arms crossed on his chest, looking at her with a frown on his face.
"Ah yes... Sorry, Mav... I mean Alpha."
He sighed, " Erine could you at least pay attention when I ask you a question? I accepted that you are my gamma in place of my beta and do not have to stay in the pack house, but sometimes you push it!"
"Yeah, I know... Sorry." She bowed her head in respect for her Alpha who just pinched his nose while closing his eyes and letting out a heavy sigh.
"Anyway, I didn't call to lecture you but to ask for your opinion. What do you think about those?" He pointed to the documents he handed her earlier and that she was still holding, almost forgetting about.
The young woman looked at the papers, putting on her serious face, she read the different papers before saying surprised, "An alliance with the Blood lake pack?! I mean, they have great warriors, but I heard the Alpha is very strict and wants to often expand his territory."
"Yes, this is true, but last week he reached out to me to forge an alliance, as we are a strong pack... We still remain small, I think it should be wise to accept the alliance. Brian and I worked on the paper info and terms of the alliance. We wanted to have your opinion."
Erine once again looked down at the papers, thinking about the pro and cons.
"I think you should set for a neutral alliance. I mean, don't forget he likes to expand his territory and conquer. He could ask you for help. I'm sure great at fighting, but I'm not into going to attack packs just for the fun of it... If you propose a neutral alliance, I can, in exchange, hold some special fighting classes for their warriors, and you won't have to send any of ours to him. Also, even if it's a neutral alliance, other packs would think twice before trying to attack us because of his notoriety."
Maverick, while listening to his Gamma, had come around his desk to sit on his chair and started typing something on his laptop.
Erine was well known around the land for having exceptional fighting skills and sometimes giving special classes to share what she learned in her 2years journey.
This was indeed something the other alpha would appreciate.
"Yes, Brian and I thought so too... I just wanted your opinion because it will involve you as..." He put his fingers in the air and quote, "tribute for the classes."
"Yeah, I know, but I'm still the gamma so I should at least do that" She winked at the alpha who started laughing.
"Sure, sure." he said now in a better mood.
"Okay, it's settled, I will talk to Alpha Greyson for a neutral alliance, that or nothing."
Erine tilted her head, " Do you think he will refuse and try to conquer us?"
"Probably not, I think he wanted this alliance in the first place because, even though we are a small pack, we still are amongst the top warriors of the land and the most steady pack. I mean in a land where there are more than 120 packs this says a lot... Also, I think... he might have a thing for you." While saying the last part of his sentence, Alpha Maverick looked at the young woman.
She scoffed, "But I didn't even meet this guy! Doesn't he have a mate?!"
"Well, maybe you are his mate!" Maverick told her teasingly. Seeing she kept a serious face, he leaned on his chair while adopting a more placid tone. "He had a mate, yes, I think she died while he was conquering a new pack. He wants now a chosen mate and because he heard you were the best warrior he might choose you."
"I will refuse!"
"I know, I know, that's fortunate that our laws prohibit to force on a chosen mate."
"Yeah..." Erine thought about her mate she didn't encounter yet, will she even have one? She was part witch after all, and she wasn't really normal as other wolves.
She could fight yes, even in her wolf form, even though she could hold against 5 or 6 wolves, she was still pretty tiny. Her wolf was almost the size of a normal wolf when other wolves could be tall as horses or more. She also didn't have that crazy body heat every werewolf seemed to have. She was often cold and had to wear warm clothes in winter.
She truly wanted a mate but she didn't want to be chained to a pack due to that and it was usually the case, one would meet his other half and they would move into one of the packs together making pups and stuff almost immediately.
She didn't even want pups, she loved them but didn't want them which was very unusual thinking for a wolf, a female at that. Even her wolf, Alaya, didn't feel keen about having pups which were very odd.
"ERINE! You are doing it again!" The voice of an angry Maverick echoed in the room.
She snapped back to reality, "Ah, sorry..."
"Geez, you are already 24 years and you are acting like a child! it doesn't help when we look at you it's like you are 17 years old at most. How can you sometimes be so serious and kick ass and sometimes so carefree?!"
Seeing she was looking down, Maverick stood up from his chair and walked to her, putting a hand on her shoulder.
"Listen, I know it's sometimes bothering you, where you come from, what you think you are and such... But believe me, you have your place among us and you will have the perfect match for a mate."
Erine stayed silent, thinking about those words, somewhat Maverick always seemed to know when she was doubtful about herself. "What about the fact that I look younger?"
"Well... It must be probably because of your witch legacy, they live older than us, so yeah..." Her alpha was one of the few people who knew she was part witch, for the security of the pack, she decided to tell him privately when she became the Gamma.
"Anyway... Sleep more, you look a little out of it today!"
"I had my deadline today sooo... Kind of didn't sleep right for 2nights."
"Well, that explains it all! Are you going to town today? Do you have a copy?"
Her alpha was always eager when she finished a new book.
Erine started to have a thing for writing when she was on her world tour and when she came home, she decided to give it a go.
She had to find work anyway, so why not writer? And it worked! A little company that was publishing children's books made a contract with her.
She was happy to have found a job she loved that didn't require her to be in a fixed location and it gave her time for gamma duties.
Actually, all in the pack, at the age of 18, had to find a job. It could be a job in the pack itself or another, they had to pay a wage to the Alpha, and the rest they could keep it.
Often in other packs, the Alpha and Beta would live that way, some packs even took a bigger part out of the paycheck of their people, but Maverick wasn't that kind of alpha. He owned little companies around the land and the pack was wealthy even though they didn't especially show off.
"So... A copy?" Asked a hopefull Maverick.
Erine smiled, she knew he loved her stories, but she also knew that her biggest fan was Ashley, the Alpha 5years old daughter. He also had a son of 15 who was actually at a training camp.
"Yeah, I have a copy for your little princess, but it's still at home, you called me in a rush, so didn't have time to take it." Erine laughed when seeing the big alpha in front of her starting to pout because he had to wait.
"I promise as soon as I come back from town after handing down my work, I will bring the copy to you!" She glanced at the watch around her wrist. " Speaking of which... I have to go, is the meeting over?"
"Sigh... Yes, it is." Said a defeated Alpha.
"Thanks, Mav!" When not in the formal mode, she used to call him that, never actually called him dad, just Mav.
"See you." she waved her hand before storming out of the office.
