THE CHOOSING CEREMONY
The full moon hung heavy above the clearing, its pale light spilling over the ancient forest like silver paint.
Every year, the same ceremony.
Every year, the same dream.
Every unmated woman in the pack gathered beneath the moonlight, dressed in flowing white gowns that shimmered like frost. Laughter floated through the cool night air, mixed with the scent of pine, earth, and anticipation.
But I stood at the edge of the clearing, half-hidden in shadow.
Because tonight wasn’t supposed to be my dream.
Tonight was supposed to be my survival.
I tugged the thin shawl tighter around my shoulders, trying to hide the tremble in my hands. My heart pounded so loudly I swore the wolves around me could hear it.
If anyone discovered my secret, this ceremony wouldn’t end with celebration.
It would end with exile.
Or worse.
“Lena!”
I turned just in time for Mira to rush toward me, her dark curls bouncing wildly.
“There you are,” she whispered breathlessly. “Why are you hiding all the way back here?”
“Less attention,” I murmured.
Mira frowned. “This is the Choosing Ceremony. Attention is the whole point.”
I forced a smile.
Easy for her to say.
Mira was born into one of the strongest families in the pack. Her wolf was powerful, respected, admired.
Mine…
Mine didn’t exist.
Or at least, that’s what everyone believed.
The truth was far more dangerous.
I felt the familiar pulse deep inside my chest—the strange, silent presence that had lived within me my entire life.
A wolf that refused to reveal itself.
A wolf that didn’t behave like any other.
And if the Alpha ever sensed it…
My stomach twisted.
The drums began.
Low. Slow. Echoing through the clearing like a heartbeat.
The ceremony was starting.
Every woman stepped forward into the moonlight, forming a semicircle around the ancient stone altar. I hesitated before joining them, my feet feeling impossibly heavy.
The air shifted.
Power rippled through the clearing.
And then he arrived.
The Alpha.
A hush fell instantly.
Even the wind seemed to stop moving.
Alpha Kael stepped into the clearing like a storm wrapped in human skin.
Tall. Broad-shouldered. Dark hair brushing his collar. His presence pressed against my lungs, making it hard to breathe.
I had seen him before, of course.
Everyone had.
But never this close.
His golden eyes scanned the gathered women with quiet intensity. The moonlight carved sharp shadows across his face, highlighting the strength in his jaw, the quiet danger in the way he carried himself.
He was devastatingly handsome.
And terrifying.
Because Alpha Kael didn’t choose lightly.
Whoever he chose tonight would become Luna.
His mate.
The most powerful woman in the pack.
My heart hammered harder.
Not my problem, I reminded myself.
I just needed to survive the night.
The Elder stepped forward beside the Alpha, raising his staff.
“Tonight,” his voice boomed across the clearing, “our Alpha chooses the woman who will stand beside him. The one destined to lead with him.”
The drums slowed.
One beat.
Two.
Three.
Alpha Kael began walking.
He moved along the line of women slowly, studying each face.
Girls straightened as he passed them. Some held their breath. Others tried to smile seductively.
I kept my head down.
Don’t look at him.
Don’t attract attention.
His boots crunched softly against gravel as he moved closer.
Closer.
Closer.
My pulse thundered in my ears.
Then—
He stopped.
Right in front of me.
My stomach dropped.
No.
No no no.
Please keep walking.
But the silence stretched longer.
Slowly… painfully… I lifted my gaze.
And met his eyes.
The world tilted.
Something ancient and electric snapped between us.
His golden eyes widened.
The air around us seemed to vibrate.
Inside my chest, my hidden wolf surged awake with a force that nearly knocked the breath from my lungs.
Mate.
The word echoed through my mind like thunder.
My heart froze.
Impossible.
No one could sense my wolf.
No one.
Yet the Alpha stared at me like he had just discovered fire.
His voice came out low and rough.
“You.”
The entire clearing inhaled sharply.
The Elder blinked. “Alpha… are you certain—”
“I’ve made my choice.”
Alpha Kael stepped closer.
Close enough that I could feel the heat of his body.
Close enough that his scent—dark pine and smoke—wrapped around my senses.
His gaze burned into mine.
“Lena,” he said quietly, tasting my name like a secret.
My knees nearly buckled.
How did he know my name?
“I choose her.”
Gasps exploded around the clearing.
Mira’s hand flew to her mouth.
Whispers rippled through the crowd.
“The Alpha chose Lena?”
“That’s impossible.”
“She’s barely anyone.”
But none of that mattered.
Because Alpha Kael hadn’t taken his eyes off me.
And the way he was looking at me…
It wasn’t just curiosity.
It was recognition.
Possession.
Danger.
His hand lifted slowly, reaching for mine.
The moment his fingers brushed my skin—
My hidden wolf roared awake.
A wave of raw power exploded through my body.
His eyes flared brighter.
And under his breath, so quiet only I could hear it, he murmured—
“Found you.”
My blood turned to ice.
Because if the Alpha had truly found me…
Then my secret wasn’t safe anymore.
