5 The prospect of being in the car for six hours hadn’t seemed terrible when they had first started out on the road, but the last hour felt twice as long as the previous four. And they still had an hour to go. “I hope you were right about this route being the correct choice,” Debbie said, trying to stretch her legs in front of her. She checked the back seat to make sure Sandy wasn’t in the way before sliding her own seat all the way back. Sandy was sitting behind Bob, her face glued to the window, like she’d never seen the passing scenery. And then Debbie remembered that Sandy probably hadn’t. “I was,” Bob said. “I checked when we stopped at the last rest area. There was a three-car pileup on the other route.” He sounded very pleased with himself, but then sent a concerned look her way.
