Bob glanced across to where Debbie dozed in the passenger seat, and he had to force his gaze back to the road. She had barely looked at him since he’d pointed out the snacks he had bought for the road trip. Maybe he had overstepped a boundary.
He hadn’t slept at all the night he had discovered that he’d be on this road trip with Debbie, his brain refusing to shut off. He couldn’t stop thinking about her reaction to the news, and he wondered how he was expected to act around her. They were technically colleagues for the time being, and he would treat her as such if that was what she wanted. But he also wanted to make her as comfortable as possible with the situation.
