Two days passed, and she was starting to get to know her own child. While Lucian made phone calls, she played with him on the floor and let him ease into the fact that Nana was not there to take care of him. He liked music, and he liked to move around. He could walk with assistance, or scoot around furniture to get where he wanted. He didn't crawl much, but scooted himself on his butt if he couldn't reach it from the couch or a chair. She enjoyed watching him, but was still very standoffish about touching him. A week passed and she and Lucian were lying on the couch together. She was exhausted and he rubbed her back as she listened to his heart thud in his chest. "When can we go back?"
"When Lucifer says we can go back."
"Have the lawyers taken care of my mom?"
"Yes. They found holes in her case, tore it apart. She won't bother us anymore."
"They won't hurt her though?"
"No, they're just lawyers." She felt his chest rumble as he chuckled, felt his fingers curl around the ends of her hair. She took in a deep breath, let it out slowly.
"I'm tired."
"I think...most people would say 'welcome to parenthood', but I have a feeling you would clock me if I said that." She pinched him instead and closed her eyes.
"I need a nap."
"We need to talk first."
She whined, "about what?"
"About what is going to happen when David enters the Pit. I need you to understand the consequences of what we did, and what will happen."
"I don’t want to talk about this."
"Too bad, I'm going to talk and you are going to listen." She groaned and buried her face in the collar of his shirt, putting her hands over her ears. He placed fingers around her wrists and took her hands away from her head. "Listen. When we arrive, Lucifer will take David. Not for good, but for a little while. He'll perform a blood ceremony claiming David as his. This will hurt him Addison but you cannot interfere."
" I don't want to hear this.” She moved to get up but he held her there.
"This would not have to happen if we hadn't...done what we did. What I did. But this is what it has to be. He's a very important little boy, and Lucifer wants his war."
"What does that little boy have to do with starting a war? He's not even a year old, he can't even walk on his own yet."
"I already told you this; Lucifer was promised a son to destroy humanity. My selfishness...I didn’t want to share you and stole that from him. He has been kind enough to let you keep him. He could have killed him, for some reason he didn’t. I don’t know why." She groaned into his shoulder.
"This is too much, Lucian. Why are you telling me this...?"
"So you are prepared."
"Nothing can prepare someone for what you just told me. When is it going to happen?"
"When Lucifer tells me it’s time to go back. Otherwise, we stay here and we wait."
She didn't want to cry but she did and eventually, exhausted, fell asleep on his chest.
........
Two weeks later, while curled up next to him in the early morning hours, Lucian's phone buzzed on the side table and woke her up with a start. She leaned over him and took it from the wood table and looked at it. She knew who it was and was ready to ignore the call but she felt his hand close around hers, "Don't," She didn't say anything as she lay her head back down on his shoulder and listened as he answered the call. "Do you know what time it is, Lucifer?--- 3am, Well I've learned to enjoy sleep ----Yes, Yes, I understand." His thumb tapped the screen and he put it back on the table and let his hand drop to his chest; he hadn't even bothered opening his eyes.
"What did he say?"
"We leave tomorrow night."
"I'm not ready for this."
"You never will be; but you still have to do it."
"What do I need to do?"
"You need to sign a few papers with my lawyers. And then whatever you want to do until we have to leave, I’ll have someone come up and pack our things. But do not disappear. I am warning you; it will be worse if you try and run." She didn't say anything just rolled over and went back to sleep. He did the same and when she woke up in the morning he was gone. David was awake and she laid there a minute, listening to him fuss and make noises before she got up to retrieve him.
They spent the day at Central Park, got something to eat and then met Lucian back at the pent house; things packed and ready to go. She stood with David on her hip, watching as he paced, phone to his ear and swearing. He wasn't speaking English, he wasn't speaking any kind of language she had ever heard but he was angry at somebody. "What's wrong?" she let David slide from her arms and Lucian put his hand up to shut her up and continued to pace. Eventually he got so angry the phone was thrown with force at the wall and clattered to the hardwood floor in pieces.
"What the hell is going on?"
" We have to go. Now."
