Chapter 17

17 She stood, dumbfounded at his outburst and waited for an answer. She knew it wouldn't be good. She knew something had gone wrong and her day was about to get worse than it already was. "It's hard to explain but our journey is going to be a little more difficult than I had planned." He looked down at David, who had sat himself down. "You are causing me a lot more trouble than I had expected." "Wait, wait...how is this his fault? If anything this is your fault. He would never be here if it wasn’t for you. What is going on, Lucian? I thought it was all 'planned out'?" He was still pacing and knocked over a chair, flipped the table in the living room; the glass top cracked. She picked David up and pulled his hat off his head, dark hair stuck up and she smoothed it down. "What is wrong with you?" "Nothing is wrong with me, what is wrong is with Them." He pointed upward, then and ran his hands over his face. "David's moral "meter" is still sitting at neutral right now. He's not like me, he's not like them. He doesn't know right from wrong yet. They have plans to take him before we can get him down there." "Wait...how...if he's half you how can he go anywhere but your way? I don't understand." "He isn't just part human part demon, he's part human part…not human. You forget I was an Angel once. He can be swayed at this age and that's what they plan. If they get him, our war is over before it begins. It will never happen." She thought a moment that that didn't sound like such a bad thing and kissed his head as he put it on her shoulder, rubbing his eyes in that awkward baby way.  "So what are you going to do about it?" "The trip will be a little harder. For the most part, when we pass through the plains to the Pit, they leave us alone. But there's a neutral spot as we pass, a 'no man's land' kind of space and they will be waiting for us." "I don't want to do this." "You have to. You have no choice." She knew this; it was always the way since the first day she had been with him. She had no choice; she had to do as she was told. It was a rare moment when she didn't get some kind of retaliation for not doing as she was told. "Come here, hold him close, and cover his eyes." She put his hat on his head again, pulling it down over his forehead and hugged him close, placing a hand over his eyes. He struggled, irritated like any child would be. She walked toward Lucian and he wrapped his arms around her, her face in his chest and she squeezed her eyes shut. This was a part she never liked; even more so than the after effects once they arrived. She felt her body become almost unbearably hot, pressure pushing every part of her. She felt his arms tight around her, pressing David between them, he began to cry. There was a quiet, as there always was when they passed through the neutral plain. "I'm going to let you go, don't look, keep David close." "Wait, no, don’t let me go!" She felt his arms drop her, and she was suddenly in a free-fall. She squeezed her eyes shut, David cried, struggling against arms that were holding him too tightly. She could hear his voice, she could hear feathers, and a language she didn't understand. Hands grabbed her and then were torn away as she fell through the last layer and landed with a thud on her back in the hall way, pushing all the air from her lungs, David crying on her chest. She rolled over, letting him slip from her arms to the carpet, horrible gasping sounds coming from her as she tried to catch her breath but couldn't. She lay on her stomach, face pressed into the carpet as she coughed and gagged. She was disoriented, ears ringing, whole body vibrating and light headed. So much so that she couldn't do anything as she watched Levi walk slowly up to her and leaned down to take David from the floor. He was screaming and crying; face wet with tears and a runny nose. "Don't....Don't take him." She had pushed herself up on her elbows taking in air as her body relaxed. "You're so stupid Addison--- Ohhh, shush now." She looked at David, smoothed back his hair and wiped the tears from his face. He was crying to the point of hiccups, and squirming around in Levi's hands. She walked away and left Addison on the floor still coughing. Rolling over on her back she let her hand drape over her chest as she looked at the blackness above her, and waited; her breathing starting to go back to normal but her chest hurt. After a few minutes she got to her feet and headed the way that Levi had gone but felt hands grab her shoulders and keep her back. "You have to stay here Addy you can't go in there." Lucian had hold of her and she struggled against him, pounding on his chest and squirming out of his grasp. She got out of his hold for three steps before she felt herself being slammed against the wall with force and she sunk to the floor, crying. She had become suddenly overwhelmed by all the maternal instincts she had fought over the year. She needed to keep him safe and the sounds of his frightened crying was becoming too much. "They're hurting him Lucian, how can you listen to that, how can you let that happen?" He had crouched down in front of her, a hand left her shoulder to smooth hair from her face. "Because I have to, it's just how it is. I'm not in charge down here, Addison. This is his decision, this is what he wants." He kissed her forehead and stood up, looked at her for a moment and walked down the hall toward the crying and entered the room where they had all gathered for the ceremony that would take David from Lucian and give him to Lucifer.
