Chapter 14

1394 Words
14 Days went by, those turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months. She was not allowed up there. All she got were pictures that Lucian would bring back with him. She found herself missing him; something that pulled at her far too much out of every day than she was comfortable with. Yes, she had settled back into routine; often sitting at his side as he took on whoever it was he was torturing that day. She sat next to him at meetings, but never on the surface and he would often still go to her at night. But she was sad and angry all at the same time and soon refused to see him at all. He was trying to be patient with her. It wasn’t fair and he had caused the whole thing; with a little help of her bad temper and insufferable need to piss him off. He tried making things easier, but bringing her pictures only seemed to make it worse. He'd never expected this out of her. Who would have thought she would be the motherly type? He stood with his head against her door, trying to be civil as she shouted at him. It was a one sided argument. One he knew he wouldn't win so he didn't bother to raise his voice or threaten. He just talked. "Please open the door Addison." "No." "You can't stay in there." His voice rose a little in volume, palm of his hand on the door ready to push it open. "Watch me." He pushed the door open, the latch clicking and walked in slowly and pushed the door closed behind him. "You can't lay in here forever." "He's going to be a year old in a few days, Lucian. He doesn't even know who I am. Why did you do this to me? Why would you two force me to be mother and then take it all away from me?" She rolled over, her messy hair falling over her face and hiding her tears. The closer it got to David’s birthday, the harder it became to be without him.  She didn't know why she was so sad. She thought for sure that once she was free of David, she would be happier; but as the months went by, she only thought of him more. "Any other person would be happy to be in your position. You've had a year to do as you please without worrying about him." "Do as I please? You're kidding right? You've trapped me here again. I can't go anywhere. Just here. It's like being in a prison. I would have rather stayed with my mom than stay here like this again." She sat up, getting angry at his words. It was what he wanted. He wanted her to get angry, mad and irritated. "I think about him all the time now. You get to see him, Lucian. He knows you, he knows Lucifer better than he knows me!" She did finally pick up a piece of decorative glass that sat on the table beside her and threw it his way. He moved slightly and it whizzed past his head. "Feel better?" "No.” Brows furrowed, she hugged a pillow and put her chin on drawn up knees. He cracked a smile and came closer. "I need you tonight. Which means I need you to get up, and get yourself clean and be ready in a few hours." The smile he had managed left his face and he waited a response. "No. I'm not going. Wai--" He grabbed her arm, and dragged her off the bed and into the bathroom. He threw her in the shower stall and turned the water on. "You will clean yourself up, and put something nice on and be ready to go in a few hours. I've had enough of this. You are acting like a child." She blinked behind the water that was running over her face and looked at him blank faced. He left the room and she could hear him rummaging through the wardrobe. He pulled out a wine colored dress and shoes. Those were thrown on the bed and he left the room, slamming the door behind him. Addison didn't sit there long; she did as she had been told. She stood up and stripped the soggy clothes off and threw them on the floor and showered. She got dressed, did her hair and was ready when he asked. Though she didn't feel like smiling or being nice, she did when he offered his arm to her and kissed the curve between her neck and shoulder. She looked at him and the smile faded just to let him know she was still not happy with him. He took her to the surface for the first time in nearly a year. The transition was always a little hard on her, making her body buzz, her heart beat irregular and her head swim. It was harder this time as it had been so long since she had traveled through the planes. Hell was not so much 'down' beneath the earth as it is a separate plane, separate reality that ran diagonal to it. Heaven was the same. Not up, just on an upward diagonal next to Earth. She had no choice but to hang on to him when they hit the pavement and he held her up like he always did and made sure she could stand before they headed into the building. Wherever they were, it was tropical, the heat was sultry and heavy and there was a beach nearby, she could hear the ocean, smell the salt in the air. She wondered where they were. He had not brought her to the usual noisy club, or upscale bar. When they walked in the music was quiet, the lighting very dim and she could smell expensive food mixed with leather and polished wood. They were seated and he looked across the table at her and folded his hands. "Well. I'm sure you have no idea what day it is, do you?" "Am I supposed to?" her lips barely parted as she spoke to him, mumbling and looking around at the expensive furnishings. "I would think you wouldn't forget. The day he sent me to find a soul. The day I whispered in your ear in the commons room and drove you mad." "We're celebrating the day you started tormenting me? Making me and everyone else think I'm crazy? Oh, very romantic..." Arms crossed, she leaned on the table and glared at him. He laughed a little and shook his head. "Celebrating a day that has changed us both. I thought you might want dinner, to relax a little bit before we go see David tonight." Her expression softened. "I can finally see him?" "Yes. I've arranged it with your mother, she knows we are coming. I told her we were having dinner for our anniversary and then we would be over to see him." "Oh I bet she's just thrilled to see me. How have you explained me not being there for a year? Just disappearing again?" "She thinks you've been in a private facility in the Bahamas. It's why you couldn't visit." "Oh, nice. Excessively rich mystery husband pays for rehab on a tropical island? She must really like you." She grinned and sat back as he chuckled. "Oh yes, she loves me. But not many women can resist me, including your mother." They ate, drank wine, and enjoyed themselves. She was nervous, and she drank more than she ate. When they had finished they walked from the expensive restaurant and he wrapped his arms around her and left the island only to appear again in New York a block down from where her mother lived. The quiet upscale neighborhood seemed deserted, but most families around here didn't party, or have late nights. They walked hand in hand until they stood outside her mother’s home and she tensed up. "He's not going to know who I am." He knocked on the door and when it swung open and her mother stood there she took a small step back. Her mother was shocked to see she had actually come, and that she looked as good as she did. She expected something worse.  "Addison, I'm so happy you're feeling better."
