SURELY, I HADN’T JUST heard those words come out of my father’s mouth. Surely, they were mere figments of my imagination.
Illegal?
I blinked at him, then readjusted my glasses so I could lock eyes with him properly. I shifted my weight, hoping to get a better handle on the situation.
“I’m sorry,” I said slowly, selecting my words carefully. I didn’t want to be rude. I didn’t want to upset him. But I still needed clarification. “What did you just say?”
He stopped, his throat working hard as though he was weighing his next words carefully.
I waited, though I wanted to jump at him. I tapped my foot, shoving my hands behind my back and pulling at my fingers, just to have something to channel my energy into.
