Prologue
“Your highness, the king is asking for you downstairs...”
With my eyes closed, I gulped the lump on my throat. I did that in a matter of a second before turning to see the maid, bowing respectfully in front of my room.
My lips, despite the multitudinous doubts in my heart, stretches out for my most practiced fake smile. I bobbed my head, and saw that her eyes lightened in delight.
Maybe she was afraid I'd say no and get scolded in my behalf.
“I'll be there in a few. Thank you, Shenaira.” I uttered her name slowly and that's when she bowed, taking her leave.
I looked at my wrist when it touched the edge of the desk by my sudden movement and saw that it was bleeding. The crimson liquid wanted to gush out of the slit, but instead, it slipped slowly through the layers of my cut skin.
Heaving a sigh, I took a clean cloth and wrapped it carefully. Followed by the humorless chuckle rolling out of my throat once I get a glimpse of my reflection on the mirror.
Everyone treat me like I was trained to obey every order that there is to exist. There was no one to love me, and myself, existing in the name of Adeline, is not an exception.
Treating the wound caused by the dagger i made for myself was a huge hypocrisy but there was no one who could see how wounded I am behind my fair facade.
I stood up and dressed myself extravagantly like I owned that kind of fashion. My shoulder was wrapped in a cream colored fabric while my long silky hair draped on it.
Drawn by diamond stones was a phoenix, coming from my hips up to my well shaped chest, defining it even more.
Sturdy steps... one, two... I had lost count, walking gracefully towards the table full of people that has royal blood. Kings, queens, princes and princesses, each one of them were wearing the same kind of clothes as mine.
“A wonderful day to you, Princess Adeline.” King Itharus, the man whom I hated, showed a deceiving smile.
I had always known him and his deeds, he was infamous. He had always wanted me and has been doing bargains for my father to give me up... to him.
Good thing my father was as asshole enough to not give me to a man twice my age. He doesn't want what Itharus can give. He wants the Itharus kingdom, and good thing Itharus wasn't too much of a fool or else...
“May it be the same for you, King Itharus.” I struggled to smile, but did it in the end.
Many people has seen my smile, but only a few knows if it was genuine or not. Because most of the time, the smile I had been showing was something more fake than my father's intentions.
I walked towards them and greeted everyone before pulling a seat, sitting myself gracefully.
“Stop with the small talks for all of us know why we're having this dinner.” King Metteus, unfortunately my father, said and turned to me, “Am I speaking facts, my beloved?"
“You sure are, Father.” I nodded.
“Pff, what are you doing, Metteus? Let the young lady have her meal first.” Itharus butted in, leaving my father with no choice but let us all have dinner.
With many conversations going around the huge dining table, I also conversed with my so called friends. But everyone with the royal blood knows that no one treats another genuinely, for we all have our deeds and agendas.
As for me, I have none...
“Psst! Princess Ade!”
My wrist halted from wiping my mouth with a paper napkin, turning to see whose small voice was that, calling me.
I have turned from left to right, strolling my eyes throughout the whole hall of the castle, but I've seen no one but the adults.
“Up here!" a hiss.
My face contorted as it tilted upwards, leaving me astounded, almost falling off the chair.
“What are you doing there?” I hissed, holding my chest from shock. I looked back at the table to see if no one has noticed, and God has given me mercy this time, for everyone were still having the time of their lives. “Get down, Adi!”
She smiled, later turning it into a chuckle, showcasing her incomplete, decayed set of teeth.
I heaved a deep breath and tried to calm myself. Made up some excuses and strode out of the hall and tried to find where did that little kid find a way to get up there.
The smell of old things assaulted my nose, making me almost sneeze from the dust that has been blown by the motion of the door.
My forehead creased in confusion when I only saw a few stack of barrels and a rope. While the little kid wearing a pink gown, was seated on the small part of a concrete sticking out on a wall.
“Get down here, Leladeline!” I said, my throat immediately hurting for the unusual tone.
“No,” she said, delaying the single word while shaking her head stubbornly, “Louder, Princess! I have a weak sense of hearing, I need a higher pitch!”
I shook my head and held my forehead, I can never fight with this kid, “For Pete's sake.”
“Fine, fine. I'll get down.”
“How are you gonna—”
I wasn't done with my sentence when she held the end of the rope and jumped, landing on the barrels. A few of them rolled while I almost did, too.
I swear, this kid!
“Ta-da!” She held the side of her skirts and swayed her hip, presenting her fortunately, complete body parts. “I only got down because I saw you miserably! Did your food taste terrible? Were our chefs failing? Do you want me to get them fired? Were Father punishing you for being so laid back?”
“Leladeline!” I stopped her from blabbering further, “Where did you get those questions? Why are you here, too? You know this event is for the grown ups!”
“What now? I'm already eight! Almost as tall as you when you're not wearing those... those shoes that has a weapon underneath.”
I sighed. I was born with a lot of patience... but when with this sister, I just know that I can also get grumpy.
Also, how can she be so innocent yet not at the same time?
“Get back to your room, Leladeline. Don't let father catch you in here.”
“Father doesn't care about me, Princess Ade. He's always about his power.” She said, which made my heart ache. She knew... ”But then, him being like that makes my life so much easier! I don't want him bugging me!”
A small smile appeared on my lips when I saw her smile, with those fangs sticking out because she had lost two of her front teeth.
“Alright, go back... We still have a lot to talk about in here.”
“Are you really getting married? The maids said you're going away. If you're now getting married... you're leaving me, then?”
“No, that's not how it works, love. I'll always be here.”
“I'm counting on that, okay? Also, if you get married, that means you've found your prince charming, right?” I stared at her, with those small hoping eyes. With hesitation, I nodded. “I hope to find my own prince charming, too! Like those in the fairy tales!”
“You will...” I patted her head and consoled her to get back. I wouldn't want my father catching her here.
I was left at the stock room alone, contemplating whether I should do what I want... or choose the right thing for everyone.
l went back to the dining hall and saw that everyone was still continuing. Others started dancing to a slow music, while others remained chit-chatting.
“Here she goes, let's get on with our agenda for today.” My father stood up, leaving everyone quiet. That was his power... he stands and it was as if he had the ability to stop time.
His influence... that I hoped wouldn't bring us to our nightmares.
“King Mathias and his sons aren't here yet.” Itharus stopped him.
“Well, they're not very much needed in here, Itharus.”
“Why is that?”
“Your opinions and questionings aren't very much needed here, either, Itharus.” My father sharply glanced at him, which was reasonable. Itharus was irrelevant in this meeting, and was only here to witness this event. “Isn't my daughter the one who's more rightful to know first?”
From the beginning, I had always known that I'd come exist up to this day. I know how the world would revolve for me and that includes me being married to someone I don't know... for the sake of power... collisions of kingdoms... and the influence.
I, did hope too that this wasn't about this. I was about my wishful thinking that I had forgotten about the reality with my father.
“This is the announcement of your engagement, Adeline. The king of the Hecarus Kingdom already agreed to let his son get married to you...” He said, rasing his hand, “Thus, on this day, you won't be called as a single woman, for you are to get married to the prince of Hecarus.”
He said much, much more to ruin my dreams... To ruin the life I want for myself for he had already written my fate with his own hands.
Applauses... It was followed by applauses. The people in here... They were cruel... They were all ruthless.
There was only one smile... one smile who was genuinely happy for me.
Leladeline...
Her face flashed onto my mind... showing me the smile that I had always wanted to protect.
“No...” I whispered, which I guess travelled to everyone's ears. They all looked at me, with judgement... with fear for what might happen to me. “I don't want to get married to the Hecarus, father.”
“What did you f*****g say?” His low voice growled throughout the whole hall. But I was deaf...
If I wouldn't do this, my sister—
If I could only get here, if I can only get here by today... she would have to be much further. And I don't want that...
“I'll...” A lone tear came rolling down my cheeks, “I love King Mathias... I only want Mathias in my life, Your Highness.”
