Zoie stared at her reflection in the cracked mirror of her Seattle home. After burying Nate, Zoie called the police under a fake persona to report Nate’s deceased body. However, she fled the scene before their arrival.
For eight weeks, Zoie cried at the loss of Tobias. She had no clue who the man was that assaulted her and murdered her dearest love but she realized that she could never forgive the man for what he had done. Instead, she would punish him for eternity because she has to suffer for eternity.
As Zoie looked at her reflection in the mirror, she noticed the dark circles around her eyes from the lack of sleep. As usual, her eyes were filled with tears as she remembered all the moments between her and Tobias. There was no denying that Zoie truly loved Tobias despite the fact that they hadn’t known one another. Nonetheless, Tobias showed Zoie something critical – to not underestimate life and to experience it without limit.
He would never know that she loved him.
As the tears slowly rolled down Zoie’s round cheeks, the sound of Nate’s loud voice caught her attention as he screamed in torture. Zoie’s frown turned into a large smile as she listened. Over the past two months, Nate’s cries were the only source of happiness for her.
The lights sparkled brilliantly making him crush them shut. Slowly, he sat up and checked out the hospital room. He could recall being encircled by extreme darkness and that is it. He did not understand how he had been moved to a hospital yet he was incredibly grateful and would make certain to show his appreciation. The door opened as a nurse stepped into the room with a medical doctor following behind her. The lady grinned delicately as the specialist peered down at his clipboard.
“It’s nice to see you’re awake!” The doctor announced with a reassuring smile.
"How long have I been out?"
The medical attendant made a sound as if to speak. "Dr. Newton, it's occurring once more."
Dr. Newton nodded his head before clearing his throat. “Mr. Stone, there’s something we will have to discuss.”
Tobias followed his eyes and stared at his hand that sat on his lap engulfed by flames. Tobias jumped causing the nurse to run towards him. She didn’t come too close out of fear of being burned but she held her hands out to reassure that she intended no mischief.
“You’re going to have to relax. It is the only way.” She whispered. Tobias sat there and took deep breaths. The staff said nothing as they watched him intensely. Slowly, the flame dissolved leaving Tobias to sigh in relief.
“What’s happening to me?” Tobias asked, now staring at his hands in shock.
“Someone made an anonymous call about your body. You were found passed out by someone’s home. You had been transported to the hospital but your hand lit on fire so you were transferred here.” Dr. Newton answered.
“Where am I?” Tobias asked.
“Doveport Lab.” He responded. “We work with superhumans who have been injured. We’ve been running tests but I believe that your power is Pyrokinesis. We’ll run better tests now that you’re awake to get the actual results.”
“How long have I been asleep?” Tobias asked.
“Two months, sir.” He replied.
“I had no visitors?” Tobias asked in hopes of hearing Zoie’s name.
"No sir." The specialist replied. Tobias murmured intensely as he set his head into his palms. Memories of his experience with Zoie went through his mind. He could recall her saying that she tried to heal him and tried to give him powers. As Tobias sat there, the memory of Zoie holding his hand with her eyes closed played through his mind. Realizing that she was giving him abilities at that moment, Tobias sharply inhaled.
She had been trying to protect him and it worked. However, he would never be able to show her that she had done it, he would never be able to show his gratitude to her for saving his life since the moment they had met, he would never be able to kiss her, and he would never be able to tell her that he was madly in love with her. Because just like the petals in the wind — she was gone placing him back in square one — alone.
"Are you alright?" The medical attendant asked as she ventured forward.
Tobias looked up at her before speaking. “I’m not okay.”
