Ba-dum! Ba-dum! Ba-dum!
Antonia's eyes were wide open as she looked straight into the eyes of her roommate, her heart pounding.
It wasn't possible.
His brows furrowed as he stared at her and took a step back.
“Did you…” he turned his head towards his shoulder and took a huge sniff of his clothes.
Shaking his head, he glared at her, “Did you just imply that I stink?”
What?
The question caught her off guard as she blinked at him.
Slowly, she dropped her hands from her lips, “Did you…” she swallowed before continuing, “Did you not hear that?”
“Hear what?” He growled, his face twisting into a mask of fury.
Was that her wolf’s voice? If Nikolas didn't–
“Oh, I see,” Nikolas let out a dark chuckle as he nodded his head, “You must be trying to prank me, shrimp.”
“You think this is funny, right?”
Blinking, she focused on him. “No. No, I wasn't…” she shook her head.
“You a jokester?”
Gbam!
Antonia jumped at the sound, her body on alert. Slowly, she turned her head to the side.
Nikolas’ fist were enclosed within the wall beside her head.
He broke the damn wall!
Slowly, he pulled out his hand and bits and pieces of the wall fell to the ground.
Gulping, she focused on him.
“You better watch it, shrimp.” He bit out, his voice low and threatening as he leaned towards her.
“Or you might just get what's coming to you,”
Antonia waited for him to step away, instead he leaned even closer, his sweet scent engulfing her nostrils, “I am not going to fail because of you, so you better be ready to step up.”
Her brows furrowed at his words. “Well, I don't want to fail either,” she spat back as she maintained eye contact, “What makes you think I'm not ready?”
Leaning away, his eyes widened. “Are you really asking me that?”
“You look like a twig! I can probably snap you into two with one hand,”
“Looks can be deceiving, you know,” she gulped as the words slipped free from her lips.
With a smirk playing on his lips, he said, “Then, you'll have to prove otherwise then, won't you?”
“But from today onwards, your name is shrimp,” he added as he turned away.
“No, it's not! It's Anton,”
“I make the rules, SHRIMP,” he emphasized on the last word, as if to pass a message across.
“Bullsh*t!” She snapped as he walked towards the door.
“And besides,” she continued, tilting her head to the side, “rules are meant to be broken.”
Pausing his steps, Nikolas glanced back at her, his brow arching, “Are they now?”
His tone held an air of threat in them, as though he was daring her to defy him.
“I’ve told you. You better not slow me down. You won't like what I'll do to you if you dare,”
Clenching her fist at her sides, she watched him leave, banging the door close.
One. Two. Three.
A loud sigh escaped her lips as she collapsed to the ground. It was as though all the strength had been sucked out of her body.
What the hell was that voice?
“Wolf,” she called, “Are you there?”
Silence.
Slowly, she rose to her feet, stumbling her way to the bathroom.
“Wolf!” She called as she stared at the mirror, “I heard you earlier. Why won't you speak to me?!”
Her first shift in her previous life was so sudden and abrupt, she never learned of her wolf’s name.
“Can you at least tell me your name?” She pressed.
Silence.
“Arghh!” She let out in frustration, her hands grabbing her short hair as she pulled at them.
“Just talk to me, damn it!”
Everything was happening too fast, she had questions she needed answers to.
Sighing, she marched back into the room space, then her nose twitched as a sweet smell drifted towards her.
Turning, she found herself on Nikolas' side of the room. It was as though his scent had become sharper all of a sudden, and it was all she could notice.
Had she walked here subconsciously? Was he really her…? No. She had to make sure.
Glancing around, she sighted Nikolas’ shirt on his bed.
That should be enough.
Quietly, she tiptoed closer and picked it up. Gulping down her nerves, she leaned closer to the shirt.
BANG!
Antonia jumped at the sound, the shirt falling to the ground as she turned around.
“I wasn't doing any…” her words died down as she found the door to her room still closed.
What the?
For a moment, she thought Nikolas had come back.
Sighing, she walked to the door and opened it slightly, peeking into the passageway.
A boy who was standing beside a huge traveling bag was apologizing to someone in front of him over a fallen shelf.
They have neighbors now.
Quietly, Antonia closed the door, and this time, she locked it before marching back to Nikolas' side of the room.
Grabbing the shirt that had fallen, she took a long whiff of it.
“Grrrrrrrrr….” A growl slipped free from her lips as a hot sensation rushed through her body.
At the feel of sharp canine slipping down her lips, she dropped the shirt and rushed to the bathroom.
“H-how?”
Looking at herself in the mirror, she raised her hands to her lips and touched the canine teeth that had grown longer. Her eyes were glowing yellow, but in the next second, everything returned to normal.
It was almost as if she was shifting.
“Wolf!” She called, her heart pounding, and her hands trembling.
“I don't know what this is…” she begged.
“Please, I need…” her voice broke before she continued, “I need you,”
Silence.
Her shoulders dropped as she reached for the hand wash basin to steady herself.
“s**t,” she cursed as she stepped out of the bathroom.
How was she going to get through what was coming? And why did she react to Nikolas' scent this way?
Her mate.
“This is bad,” she muttered as she shook her head.
Things were changing too quickly.
Biting her lip, she tapped her foot on the ground as her brows furrowed in thought.
There had to be a way to get her wolf to talk to her.
“Charles,” she muttered, “He could help,”
Immediately, she unlocked the door and stepped out.
“What's going on?” She asked a boy standing as she stepped out of the dormitory.
Most students were rushing towards another building.
“I heard we need to get our uniforms. Very soon, only the terrible ones will remain,” he answered before running.
“Then I better…” her words were cut short, her eyes widening at the sight before her.
What the…?
That familiar black hair, gray eyes, the same walking stride that she had made fun of, the small smile on his lips that never reached his eyes.
“Wil…”
Tears pricked at the corner of her eyes as she stared at the person that was walking towards her.
The person she rejected for the sake of her pack. The one she refused to think about.
What was he doing here? He wasn't supposed…
The image of his severed hand flashed in her mind.
Blinking, her heart pounded even louder as he got closer. Her feet were stuck to the ground, she couldn't move, couldn't break free from the shock.
It was her fated mate in her past life.
Surely, he would recognize her scent as his mate. He would expose her for the fraud she was, and still, she couldn't move.
Her eyes snapped close, and her heart pounded as he got even closer. Clenching her fist at her sides, her breath hitched as she waited for everything to fall apart.
It was too late.
“Shit.”
