80 Jara helped Hilyard hold the bowl up to his lips. His hands were still shaking, but much less than they were this morning. The color on his cheeks had returned. Many of the men seemed to be improving. But so much more slowly than she had. It was strange. And Jara took secret pride in it. Even though she hadn’t done anything deliberately to recover sooner, it made her wonder if she really was stronger than the men in certain ways. The idea brought her immense satisfaction. She waited patiently while Hilyard finished his bowl. It was early evening, on the cusp of dusk. The nights were coming sooner and lasting longer. No new snow had fallen the entire day, but the wind was always present, always making itself felt in the biting cold and the relentless noise of tent canvas flapping
