Chapter One: The Scarlet Key
The rain had been falling since morning. Seventeen-year-old Alice Redgrave sat alone in the attic of her grandmother's old house, surrounded by dusty boxes and forgotten memories. Outside, thunder rumbled across the gray sky while raindrops tapped against the windows like impatient fingers. Her grandmother had been gone for three months. Yet somehow, the house still felt alive. Alice brushed dust from an old wooden chest hidden beneath a pile of blankets. "What's this?" she murmured. The chest was small and decorated with strange carvings of roses and crowns. She frowned. She had never seen it before. The lock had already rusted away. With a gentle push, the lid creaked open. Inside were yellowed letters, faded photographs, and a small velvet pouch. Curious, Alice untied the pouch. A brilliant crimson light burst from within. She gasped. Resting in her palm was a beautiful scarlet key. The metal shimmered like liquid ruby, and a heart-shaped gemstone sat at the top. For a moment, the key felt warm. Almost alive. At the bottom of the chest lay a folded note written in her grandmother's handwriting. Alice unfolded it carefully. The message contained only seven words: "When the mirror calls, follow the roses." A cold chill crawled down her spine. "What does that even mean?" Suddenly— Tick. Alice froze. Tick. Tick. Tick. The sound was coming from somewhere inside the house. The old grandfather clock downstairs had stopped working years ago. Yet now it was ticking. Slowly. Steadily. As though it had awakened from a long sleep. Alice swallowed hard and slipped the key into her pocket. The ticking grew louder. Tick. Tick. Tick. She followed the sound down the hallway. Past empty rooms. Past old portraits. Past shadows that seemed to move when she wasn't looking. The sound finally led her to a door at the end of the corridor. A door she had never noticed before. Its surface was covered in carved roses. And at its center was a keyhole shaped exactly like the scarlet key. Alice's heart pounded. "No way..." With trembling hands, she inserted the key. The lock clicked. A deep rumble echoed through the house. The door slowly opened. Behind it stood a massive silver mirror. Its glass rippled like water. Crimson roses began growing from the floor around her feet. Their petals glowed red in the darkness. Then a voice whispered from inside the mirror. Soft. Ancient. Waiting. "Welcome home, Alice." The mirror exploded with scarlet light. Alice screamed as invisible hands pulled her forward. The room vanished. The house vanished. Everything vanished. And Alice Redgrave fell into darkness. To be continued...
