The Punishment

JANE POV:

He was donning a black shirt and blue jeans. His rolled-up sleeves and his fitting shirt with the first two buttons undone, added hotness to his powerful personality. And don’t you get me started on his scent, it was driving me out of my freaking senses. I tried to compose myself before looking him into his eyes. But all my efforts went for a toss when I locked my eyes with him. His blue eyes were deeper than the ocean. I felt myself drowning into them. He kept looking into my eyes without blinking for once as if he was observing some kind of dream and did not want to miss a single moment of that. His eyes reflected many emotions. Before I could decipher the meaning of several emotions floating in his eyes, he shifted his gaze to my quivering lips. Boy, he was standing just an inch away from me. The heat of his breath was making me lose control and also his fingers were still entwined with mine. His breath deepened and then he squeezed my hand a little tighter.  He licked his lips as his eyes were still on my chapped lips. 

I had never stood so close to anyone like I was standing with this stranger. But for some strange reason, it didn’t feel wrong. He too had something going on in his head that he tried to control by clamping his eyes shut. He took a deep sigh and removed his hand from mine. He took a few steps back and opened his eyes. The Alpha rubbed the back of his neck with his left hand and shifted his gaze on the ground. “What were you doing in the woods?” he asked without looking up. “I ummmm, actually..i….was..just..ex.exploring,” I stuttered. He looked back at me in astonishment, “You were exploring the most dreaded jungle?” “I didn’t know about your pack,” I tried to get a hold over myself. “Do you have any idea how dangerous it is to roam in the woods? especially during dark hours? You could have been killed. How can you be so careless” he snapped with anger seeping through his voice. I looked at the ground not knowing what to say. He had conveniently forgotten that it is his pack that has been doing all the murders. 

“What are you going to do with me?,” I asked scaringly in a lower tone. I looked up only to catch him devouring my body with his eyes. He looked away and walked back to his chair as soon as he realized I was seeing him. He leaned forward by resting both his hand on the table and said, “You crossed into our territory without permission. It’s a serious offense. You will be punished for that.” “What punishment?” I sensed fear in my voice. “I haven’t decided yet. I Will let you know once your case is discussed,” he sat on his chair avoiding any eye contact with me. I had been greeted with too many shocks. The guy whom I thought to be a helper was going to punish me. I felt a pang in my heart and I looked again at him, trying to figure out his true character. I noticed him talking to someone over the phone. The second he put the phone down, the door opened and in came a woman. She walked in grace and had a smile on her face. “Get her settled in one of her rooms,” he commanded her. “Yes sir,” she replied sincerely. The Alpha shot a glance at me before turning back to his file. I exited with the lady. 

“Where are we headed?” I enquired nervously. “ We are going to the packhouse,” she replied formally. I followed her without uttering a single word until we stepped out of the building. “Wow,” the view in front of the building was breathtaking. There was a lake right in the front. The water was calm, reflecting swaying trees on its edge. It was a heavenly sight. “How far is the packhouse?” I asked again. “Right next to the Alpha house,” she pointed towards another big house located a few steps away from the building we had just exited. I wondered if any human had seen this part of the woods. We entered the house. 

“Who have you brought, Kylie?” a girl asked smilingly while walking towards us. She had curly hair and a lean body. We were in the living room, I guess when we bumped into her. “Hi, Shannon, she is ummm… a guest. She is going to stay with us for some time,” the lady started taking to the stairs. “Ohh..Hii am Shannon,” she extended her hand in a friendly way. “I am Jane,” I held her hand with a smile. “I have to show her to her room, so please excuse us,” Kylie told Shannon. “Yeah, sure,” Shannon rolled her eyes. I followed Kylie through the steps. We stopped in front of a room placed in the farthest corner of the house. Kylie opened the door to the room “This is your room. You will stay here until Alpha’s next verdict.” I looked around the room. It looked so….. Human type. Except for their ability to shift into a werewolf, there seemed to be no other differentiation between us, at least that is what I thought. “I’ll get some food and clothes for you. The bathroom is that way, you can get fresh if you want” she snapped me out of my reverie and with that, I heard the door shut. 

It was difficult for me to process the entire chain of events. I plopped on the bed and started with the beginning. The man who protected me the other night turned out to be a monster himself. If he is the Alpha then why did he protect me that night? Today too, he behaved weirdly. The way he held my hand and pronounced my name, it felt different. What the hell was going on? I closed my eyes in confusion and saw Mike’s smiling face. Rage surged through my body once again. I opened my eyes filled with tears, anger, and revenge. If he is the alpha then it clearly means that he is not a good person. He is responsible for his brother’s death and he is going to get what he deserves. Pain. 

A plate came into her sight. She looked up and found an old woman standing right before her. She got up and shot a glance at the plate that had boiled potato and toast on it. She gave the plumpy woman a confused look while holding the plate. “This is for you. Eat it,” she smiled at her and turned on her heels. Before I could say anything she was already out the door. I wondered if she was a werewolf too. It is then I heard the key turning into the lock. She had locked me. After hastily putting the plate on the table she rushed to the door and banged on it “Open the door.” I rushed up to the window and stood there. I looked outside in hope of catching someone’s sight but there was no one. He had captivated me. I was his prisoner now.

I plopped on the bed and cupped my face with both my hands. I had no idea what I was going to do and most importantly what was he going to do with me. A stream of tears trickled down my eyes. I was trying to keep my emotions in check when my ear caught a sound. The door creaked open and I saw Kylie standing in her usual grace. “You haven’t eaten yet?” she asked in her calm tone. “Ummmm….how long am I going to be here?” I questioned. An eerie silence followed my question. And then she replied, “You’ll have to stay here until Alpha decides your punishment.” She knows I am human. “Finish your food,” she said before sauntering out of the door.                 

The darkness engulfed the world and the moon hung in the sky studded with stars. As the night aged I found my room filled with darkness. However, I did not bother to turn on the lights as I was not afraid of the dark but the people I might see in the light. I was sitting on the floor. I had hidden my face between my knees as I had them folded up to my chest. My hands were wrapped around me. I was missing my room badly. What wouldn’t I give for my comfy bed. I did not know what was going to happen but I was having a hunch that nothing was going to pan out in my favor. My thoughts got interrupted when someone twirled the key into the lock. From the corner of my eyes, I saw a beam of light entering the room but I did not bother to look up. And then someone entered the room. In a matter of seconds, the darkness got replaced by light as someone had turned on the lights. I raised my head and squinted at the person standing by the switchboard. My eyes widened in astonishment as I found the Alpha standing before me.
