Chapter 1.
Emma's POV.
I stand in front of the mirror in my room, admiring my appearance.
My long, silky black hair hangs over my shoulders and contrasts with my emerald green eyes.
My features are soft and petite and the dress that mother made for me, fits perfectly.
Green like my eyes, it matches my olive tone skin.
As I look at myself in the mirror, I feel nervous and excited. More nervous than excited, if I'm really being honest.
Tonight is not only my 18th birthday party, it is also my engagement party.
I was promised to our Alpha King on the day of my birth.
This has been a long standing tradition in our pack. One family is chosen every year to promise their first born daughter to the Alpa King. It is a great honor and privilage.
I'm not just the first born in my family, I am the only child.
My parents have been waiting for this day for 18 years. All my life they have told me how proud they am of me and how honored they are to be giving met to our King.
I am all they have in this world, and they are all I have. Except for my best friend Amanda of course.
Amanda and I have known each other since kindergarden. She has never been a big fan of the whole arranged marriage and promising your infant daughter to an old guy tradition, but she has always been there for me and is trying to support me none the less.
Joseph, our Alpha King and my future husband is 50 years old, and has a son, Shaun, that is a year older than me. Joseph's first wife, and Shaun's mother, died a few years ago in a car accident and since that day, Joseph has been waiting for me to come of age.
A sudden knock at the door pulls me from my thoughts back to reality.
"Darling, can I come in?"
It's my mother.
My mother is like a best friend to me. She is kind and strong and understanding.
A beautiful and elegant woman. She is a wonderful mother and a great wife.
I wish to be just like her.
I invite her in and she gives me a tight hug and a quick kiss on the cheek.
"You look lovely my darling."
"Are you ready?"
Having my mother here makes me feel a little better. A little more confidant.
"I'm a little nervous."
"Do I look okay?"
She smiles at me and takes my hands in hers. She squeezes them encouragingly.
"You look wonderful darling."
I smile back at her, but she must have seen the doubt flash across my face, because she pulled me in for another tight hug.
"Joseph is a good man and a good Alpha. He will give you a good life."
I smile again. I know who and what Joseph is. The entire pack knows. He has a sort of celebrity status. Everyone adores him.
What I am embarrased to say to my mother is, that I'm worried about myself.
Will I be good enough for him?
Will I make a good wife?
I am still a virgin and Joseph is, well, experienced.
What if I don't satisfy him in the bedroom?
As if reading my mind, my mother tenderly strokes my cheek with the back of her hand.
"You are still young darling. Joseph knows this."
"There will be more than enough time to learn. Don't be so hard on yourself."
I smile at her and turn back to face the mirror.
I see that my cheeks are completely flushed and I have to look down to avoid my mothers gaze.
I feel silly.
Are all women worried about this kind of stuff?
My mother comes up behind me and puts her hands on my shoulders.
She leans close to my ear as if sharing a secret.
"You know that your father is much older than I am."
I nod my head but I'm not sure that I like where this is going. I don't really wanna hear about my parents s*x life.
My mother has a naughty glint in her eye.
Oh boy.
"I was a virgin when we met and he wasn't but, he took his time with me and taught me exactly how he wanted me."
"And I can honestly say that your father is a very satisfied man. To this day he can hardly keep his hands off of me."
"Mother!" I exclaim, appauled by her candour.
She only grins at me. She looks almost youthful again. Probably imagining her s*x life with my dad.
Honestly.
"All I'm saying darling, is that your father and I have been happily married for almost twenty years. There is no reason why you and Joseph can't be as well."
I sigh and straighten out imaginary creases from my dress.
I really hope the knot in my stomach goes away before the party starts. I'm beginning to wonder if it really is just nervousness. I feel strange, like something here isn't right.
My mother is still looking at me in the mirror so I put on my best smile to put her at ease, and hopefully myself as well.
Young girls in our pack have been marrying older Alpha's for years and almost all of them have had long and happy marriages.
There have been a rare few that ended in divorce though.
Josephs first wife, was also much younger than him and had she not tragically died in that horrific car accident, they would probably still be married.
I'm just being silly, I'm nervous and that is all it is.
I think.
I hope.
"We have to leave now darling or else we'll be late. Your father is waiting down stairs for us."
She gives me one last smile of encouragement before she leaves my room.
I take one more look at myself to make sure that I look okay.
I sqaure my shoulders and take a deep breath before I also leave my room.
My father is waiting at the bottom of the stairs for me, holding a single red rose in his hand.
Even at his age, my father is still a very handsome man. Tall and lean with sharp features. We have the same green eyes.
He smiles up at me, as I start walking down the stairs.
My father has always been my rock. My safe place.
When I reach him he holds out his hand for mine and then pulls me in for a hug.
"You look lovely Emma."
I blush a little.
"Thanks daddy."
He hands me the rose and holds out his arm for me to take.
"Are you ready?"
I look him in the eye, trying to gather some strenght from him.
"As ready as I'll ever be daddy."
He smiles at me and pats my hand as he leads me out of the house.
Outside, a black town car is waiting for us and the driver is holding about a dozen red roses.
Joseph must have sent them.
My parents both smile at me and my dad gives me a quick wink, before he lets me in the car.
"Isn't this lovely darling?"
My mother smiles at me as the driver opens the door for her.
Sitting between my parents, in the back of the town car, my nerves start to calm down a little.
I smell the roses and see that there is card.
"To my darling future wife. I cannot wait to see you. All my adoration, Joseph."
I smile to myself.
He really is a very sweet man. And romantic as well, it would seem.
The knot in my stomach is finally replaced by butterflies and a feeling of great anticipation.
It finally starts to sink in.
I am about to be engaged to the Alpha King.
