Lucas’ pov
I shook my head as I stared at Madeline, laughing at whatever it was Hunter had said. Disgust clawed within me, but I turned away from them and made my way into the woods. I let my wolf out, allowing him to take control as I sprinted through the woods in an attempt to release the pent-up emotions which threatened to swallow me whole.
I lost track of time as different images of Madeline and Hunter flashed through my mind and I let out a vicious growl as I made my way back to the cottage.
I ignored the curious eyes which watched me as I changed into my human form. There was a bonfire and everyone gathered around it.
My eyes scanned the area, looking for Madeline, but she was nowhere in sight. Neither was Hunter.
I scoffed as I took a beer from a cooler and sat in a corner.
I watched as the wolves danced and sang without a care in the world. A small smile formed on my lips as I took a swing from my beer.
It was nice seeing them all like this, happy after all they had endured.
“You have no idea how grumpy you look,” Lena announced as she sat beside me and I cast a glance her way before I stared forward again.
“You should be dancing,” I muttered, and just as I was about to take a swing from my beer, Lena snatched it out of my grip and took a gulp.
“Well, the only person I want to dance with is glaring at everyone from a distance and sulking by himself.” She announced as she playfully bumped my shoulder and I shook my head.
“I’m not exactly in the mood to dance,” I informed her.
“Would your sober mood have anything to do with Madeline and the hunter named Hunter?” Lena asked cheekily and something twitched in my jaw.
“I have no idea what you are talking about,” I muttered, and Lena chuckled.
“Come on Lucas, literally everyone around her sees the way you look at Madeline and how you seem to want to kill Hunter whenever he is near her.” Lena pointed out, and I stifled the growing irritation I felt.
“I’m sorry I’m the only one around her who has the good sense to be wary of a hunter among wolves,” I grumbled.
“We both know it’s a little more personal than that. You simply don't want to admit it to yourself," Lena announced, and I remained silent.
If I ignored her long enough, maybe she would go away.
“I’m always here when you get over her,” Lena whispered close to my ear before she placed a kiss on my cheek and rose to her feet.
I watched Lena walk away with an extra sway of her hips as she knew I was watching her.
I let out a sigh as I watched her leave. I was aware Lena had some feelings for me, ever since we had rescued her from the adorni yet I had never felt anything remotely romantic towards her.
My thoughts drifted back to Madeline and my heart dropped.
I liked her, I had feelings for her. That was the only possible explanation as to why my heart skipped a beat whenever she was near. That was the only possible explanation as to why I hated seeing Hunter anywhere near her.
I ran a hand over my face as I downed the rest of my beer in one swing and I rose to my feet.
“I had to tell her,” I muttered as I made my way towards the cottage.
I had to tell Madeline how I felt before Hunter lured her in…
“Madeline?” I called out to her as I stepped into the cottage and my eyes immediately zoned in on Madeline sleeping on the couch with Hunter beside her, gently caressing her cheek with a tender look in his eyes.
My nostrils flared as rage shot up within me at the sight.
“What the hell do you think you are doing?” I gritted out and Hunter didn’t even spare me a glance.
“Hunter you—”
“Shh,” Hunter muttered softly as he slowly looked up to me with one of his brows raised.
“Do you want to wake her up?” he asked, and I ground my teeth as I watched him caress her cheek one last time before he rose to his feet and adjusted the blanket over her body.
“Let’s go outside,” Hunter announced as he walked past me and I followed behind him.
“What exactly is your problem?” I asked when we were outside and Hunter folded his hands in front of his chest as he stared at me.
“I should be the one asking that,” he replied calmly.
I squinted at Hunter as I tried to figure out what his deal was, and then my eyes shot up as it dawned on me.
“You like her,” I announced and Hunter’s brows furrowed as his whole face darkened.
“What?” He gritted out.
“You like Madeline. You are in love with her,” I clarified as a chuckle of disbelief left my lips.
It all made a little more sense now why he was adamant on sticking around, sticking by her side.
“I have no idea what you are talking about,” Hunter muttered as he turned to walk away.
“You haven’t accepted your feelings, have you?” I asked, realizing that Hunter and I were more alike than I realized.
“Was there a real reason you wanted to see me?” Hunter asked as he turned back to me and I closed the distance between us until I was a hair's breath away from him.
“Stay away from her Hunter. If you hurt her-”
“I don’t take kindly to threats,” Hunter cut me off with a sharp look and my lips slowly stretched into a smile.
“Take it as friendly advice then. Don’t hurt Madeline, keep your distance from her or there will be hell to pay.” I promised before I walked away, purposefully bumping his shoulder.
