“Mate?” They repeated and murmurs took over immediately.
I remained rooted on the spot, eyes focused on the very man whose scent brought me here.
Sylvia was more than excited and I didn't even have the time to get angry at her.
“A slave and the Alpha?”
“It has never been heard!”
“This is an abomination! There is no possible way they could be mated!”
“The desperate is possibly trying to manipulate her way into the position of Luna.”
“If she was his mate, he should have smelled her, right?”
All these murmurs added to my fears as I looked at him. Anxiety crippled my entire body.
How could the goddess pair me with him? Of all the men in Silverstone?
Our gazes remained locked as we waited for the other to move. I had a nagging feeling he would reject me.
I mean, why wouldn't he? I was most likely the weakest wolf in Silverstone, coupled with the fact that I couldn't even get my wolf.
If he rejected me, I wouldn't blame him. I wasn't even sure I wanted him. Whether we acknowledged it or not, Adolfe was not exactly a charming man.
His mere aura gave the promise that life with him would be difficult.
He got off the throne, and everyone lowered their heads. I told her to walk past them.
Yet, I couldn't look away from him and his last warning was still ringing in my ears.
He stopped.in front of me and my breath hitched. I anticipated his next line of action which I had a feeling wouldn't favour me.
He sniffed me and then looked at me with narrowed eyes.
“You called me mate…” he drawled and I nodded, letting my eyes fall to his chest. I didn't want his insecurities to push him to claw out my eyes like threatened.
He stepped closer, covering the little gap between us. My breath caught in my throat as I shivered.
His sizzling breath hit my naps as he sniffed me, igniting a trail of goosebumps down my skin.
“But I don't smell you…”
My heart stopped altogether.
How is that even possible? He was like two decades older than me, so he should have been able to smell me out way before I even got to see him.
“Are you playing tricks with me?” He growled, seizing me by the throat.
My eyes brimmed with tears. What was this new game fate was playing with me? How could my mate not smell me?
It was bad enough that he was hideous but now, there was no way for him to acknowledge me as mate?
First, I couldn't get my wolf, and now this?
His grip on my neck tightened, signalling that he expected an answer from me.
“I'm… not… lying…” I choked out. “You're my mate…”
The murmurs increased and chuckles were beginning to get louder.
“Silence!” Adolfe barked and the hall fell. into a pin-drop silence. His gaze intensified as I struggled to breathe then he dropped me.
I hit the ground with a wince. What do these people have with throwing me around like I'm a piece of garbage?
“You have one last chance to speak the truth. After that you will be responsible for whatever comes to you,” he stated.
“Why…” my. voice cracked. “Of all the men in the land… would I come in here to lie about… being your mate?”
Gasps followed my statement. It wasn't until the words left my mouth that I realised I indirectly insulted the Alpha.
“What I'm trying to say is…” I spoke quickly, trying to salvage the situation before I would get myself killed. “You are the most terrifying and powerful being in the south, where would I get such audacity to lie to your face?”
He still had the killer gaze on but I could tell he wasn't near as half as angry anymore
“Guards!” He called suddenly and my heart pounded.
The double doors opened immediately and the guards burst in.
“Seize her and throw her in the darkest dungeons. No one must be granted access to her. You will not give her food or water until I decide what to do with her!” He ordered.
“No! No please…” I pleaded. “I'm not lying I swear… please believe me…” I pleaded as they dragged me away.
My pleas fell on deaf ears, and subsequently, I was thrown into the darkest dungeon in Silverstone.
It was so dark that I couldn't see a thing.
Not to mention the stench of the place. I didn't know how long I would last before falling sick.
Tears clouded my eyes. This was supposed to be the most important birthday of my life, but it turned out to be the worst.
I was nothing. Just the same way I arrived at Silverstone.
No wolf. No freedom. No mate.
I must have offended the goddess in some way for her to be this cruel to me.
While navigating my way through the dark, my foot hit something really hard. I dropped to the ground, searching for whatever it was with my hands.
Then I felt it and my eyes went wide with pure horror, a scream ripping its way out of my throat.
It was a bone. A human bone!
Now I understood where the stench came from.
How many more are there?
I tried my best not to panic as I moved through the dark, feeling anything I could get my hands on.
To my utmost horror, there were bones everywhere and even a decaying corpse.
This wasn't a dungeon, it was a burial ground!
There was no doubt in my heart that when Adolfe ordered that I be thrown in here, he had no intention of ever letting me out.
I was doomed to die. Just like everyone else.
