Cole looked up and saw Elizabeth standing by the door. In her shorts, T-shirt, and sneakers, she looked so casual he almost didn’t recognize her—but something about the sight of her stirred something inside him.
“Elizabeth?" he asked. "What are you doing here?” he asked, rising to his feet to welcome her.
Elizabeth laughed as she walked over to him. “Just thought I’d surprise you,” she said with a grin before leaning in to kiss him. "And I see you're pleasantly surprised."
Cole smiled as their lips met briefly. “Surprise, indeed. I’ll admit, it’s a good one. I didn't see this one coming.”
