Laura sat stiffly in her chair, arms loosely crossed, while Miguel sat across from her.
“Laura, I know my kind of life isn’t easy for you to cope with,” Miguel began, his voice low and reflective. “You’ve been in danger so many times because of me. There are people out there who want to take me down, and when they can’t get to me directly, they target the people around me—you, the kids, even Elizabeth.”
Laura sat back slightly, her face carefully neutral. She didn’t interrupt, letting him continue.
