Left it All Behind
Diana's Pov
"No!" I screamed. My heart was racing, my chest tightened. I couldn't breathe. I could feel the weight of the veil still heavy on my head. The pearls that were supposed to bring out that soft glow instead felt like a heavy burden on my scalp. Tonight I was supposed to marry a man who I didn't know and didn't love. Nothing was mentioned to me, he was arranged secretly by my family.
The church bells rang, each sound made my heart sink.
Then the memories of the arguments between my mother and I echoed in my head. "This is for your own good. Do it Diana! We only want what's best for you!"
I remember myself wailing and crying, why should I always be the scapegoat for this family?!
As I walked down the aisle, the crowd cheered. Their noise felt like regret unto my ears. Not knowing what I was doing, I aggressively dropped the bouquet, lifted my dress on my way. I burst out through the doors. The crowd gasped! My father chasing behind me screamed my name, but I did not look back. Still on my way running for my life, I could hear the groom curse, "Vulgar girl!" Nothing moved me. Out of the church, I continued running until the city lights faded.
It had been a while, but where was I? I looked up and all I could see was a forest swallowing me up. The moon was high, brighter than I'd seen before. And as if with no mercy, the branches intentionally pricked through my gown. I didn't feel a tiny bit of embarrassment. Instead, I watched as the lace teared.
I felt relief this would no longer be my prison anymore. My shoes snapped. "Ouch!" I cried out in pain. Did my feet just get pricked by a thorn?! I immediately saw the blood gush out of my feet. The pain was intense. I'll hop if I have to. Every step was painful, but I couldn't risk it, they were probably looking for me right now. Did it in pain, did it in exhaustion. That was my freedom! For the first time, I looked back at the city streets that I had just run from. This felt like my relief. No regrets, no disappointments. This was my rebellion!
Just then I heard a noise. I turned around only to see a figure in the shadows. He was tall and his eyes were burning with hot compassion.
My heart sank. What was this place, and where was I? Just after escaping prison only to fall into what was called a pit?! I tried not to stare at him, but yet his gaze was so strong. I could feel his eyes literally staring at me without blinking. His gaze weakened me. It felt heavy yet so magnetic.
"You," I heard him say. His voice was cold yet evoking. It cut through my chest like thunder.
"I — I shouldn't be here," I whispered, my chest feeling heavy. I was now shivering. "Exactly. You are in the wrong territory."
In the shadows I saw the wolf jump. His fur was bristling and he snarled his teeth. I screamed quickly, stepping back. The tall, hot guy who I was talking to before immediately stepped in between me and the furious beast. He was intensely strong. His body felt like a wall of power. "Mine!" he snarled, his voice vibrating with power.
The wolf stepped back slowly, his ears twitching just before sliding back into the dark.
My knees were shaking. I stood there, blinking twice, unable to believe...." Why — why did you save me?"
Just for a minute, his eyes softened. "Because what fate chooses is what goes! Even if it means bending the rules."
I didn't understand. What did all this mean? I heard another howl. Much stronger this time and angrier. The night had just begun. The unknown tall and handsome guy tilted his head towards the sound. His body was tense.
"They know you're here," he said as his eyes pierced through my soul, "Now run!" he commanded.
I turned around. My gown was torn, my hair was messed up, and I was chasing for my life through the forest. As I ran it was like I heard the sounds behind me. It's like I heard him growl. What was this? Revenge for what I had done, a promise or a warning?
I didn't stop until I found myself outside the forest towards the edge of town. My lungs were failing me, my heart shattered. But even as I was falling out of breath, one question kept echoing in my head,
"Who was he?"
Just before I knew it, I stumbled and right there the dirt fell right onto my face. "Damn it!" My palms, my eyes, everything was dirty. I could barely see a thing. I sobbed, "Why me? Do I really deserve this?" Running from prison, only not knowing that I could be captured in another one. More dangerous, and almost unavoidable this time.
What was that? Did I just go in her footsteps? I looked up almost too slowly, not sure what to expect next. It was him! His shadow appeared slowly, and his golden eyes were shining bright through the darkness.
He noticed my tears. Coming closer, he held my chin with his palm, lifting it up so I could look up at him. "You can't fight fate," he said. His voice sounded more firm and with authority. "The bond is sealed," he sighed. I shook my head firmly in disagreement. "I don't even know who you are!"
As if to mock me, he let out that fishy smirk. "You'll find out soon. The moon has chosen you. And who am I to refuse? It's destiny the moon has chosen us."
My heart shattered, I wanted to scream. To fight him, and go claim back my freedom because what is this?! But when his finger rubbed against my cheek, that same fire hit hard again. And this time it was hotter. I couldn't resist it. It was undeniable.
Just then I caught myself before I could go any further. "No," I whispered as my hands shaked. I could see his jaw tighten. "You are mine, you belong to me!"
Just then we heard another howl. The shadows started clearing up. I saw dozens of them circling like I had always heard of what a pack usually does.
Whispers came slowly through the trees. "Human. Unworthy, fragile and mocking. She'll break us!"
My chest contracted. This was not even a dream it was not an imagination. It's like I was prey to hungry eyes.
He stepped forward, pulling me closer to himself. He shouted, his voice sounding like thunder, "She's mine!"
The silence surrounded us. Even the wolves stayed still.
I was panicking. I didn't understand this. This other part of the world, our bond, the fire, the wolves....
His hands held my waist tight, leaning in my ear to whisper what would change my life forever. "Tomorrow the council will decide if you are my fated mate or if you not the chosen one..."
That's when I realized I had not succeeded with my escape, I had just begun.
