Chapter 6

625 Words
Selene’s lungs burned, her muscles ached, and yet, Ronan wasn’t letting go. “Again, ” he ordered, standing across from her in the training ground. She shot him a glare. “You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?” His expression didn’t change, but something flickered in his silver eyes. “You think your enemies will stop when you get tired?” She groaned, rolling her shoulders before looking at him. He sidestepped smoothly, catching her wrist and twisting it behind her. Selene gasped as her back hit his chest. He was warm—too warm, and his grip was firm but not painful. For a second, her body tensed for an entirely different reason. “Too slow, ” Ronan murmured near her ear, sending a shiver down her spine. Oh, he was definitely enjoying this. She stood on his foot, trying to make herself free, and stumbled forward. Before she could react, he caught her wrist again, spinning her around and pinning her to the ground in one swift motion. His weight was just enough to hold her down without crushing her. Her breathing was uneven, and not just from the training. His face was too close, his scent—earthy and clean—filled her senses, and the look in his eyes made her stomach flip. His gaze flickered to her lips for the briefest moment before he pushed her off and stood. “Better? ” he muttered, offering his hand. Selene hesitated before taking it. He pulled her up with effortless strength. “Again, ” he said. She groaned. “You’re impossible. ” A smirk came to his lips. “And you’re still weak. ” Selene narrowed her eyes. “Screw you. ” “You’d have to try harder for that, little wolf. ” Her pulse was faster , but before she could shoot back a reply, a sharp voice cut through the air. “That’s enough. ” Selene froze. She turned, her stomach twisting when she saw the person standing at the edge of the door. Lena Carter. Her mother stood with arms crossed, eyes filled with something unreadable. Selene hadn’t seen her in days—not since her world turned upside down. “What are you doing here?” Selene’s voice was sharp, her body still humming from the fight. Or maybe from something else. Lena’s gaze flickered to Ronan before settling on her. “We need to talk. Now. ” Selene swallowed, glancing at Ronan, who was watching Lena with his usual unreadable expression. “I’ll see you later, ” he said, though his voice was lower now, more careful. Selene hesitated before walking toward her mother, trying to ignore the way her heart still pounded from more than it did during the fight. Lena led her to a quiet part of the woods, far from prying ears. The silence stretched between them before Lena finally spoke. “You need to be careful with him, ” she said quietly. Selene tensed. “With Ronan?” Lena sighed, rubbing her hands . “I know what you’re feeling. The pull. The confusion. ” Selene’s breath hitched. “You— ” “I know more than you think, Selene. ” Her mother’s voice softened, but there was something else there—something heavy. “And I know you don’t want to believe this, but fate isn’t always kind. The bond doesn’t mean safety. It doesn’t mean love. ” Selene clenched her jaw. “And what if I don’t care what fate says?” Lena looked at her for a long moment before shaking her head. “Then I hope you’re ready for what's comes next. ” Selene had no idea what she meant. But something told her she was about to find out.
