6 Mark riffled through the file on his desk, shaking his head. The case was two decades old, but he could see the same haunted look in Meghan’s eyes that she still carried today. The photographs of Meg as a child, in protective custody after her mother’s boyfriend brutally attacked them, were disturbing to say the least. She had received several cuts which needed stitches and was subjected to more than a few bruises. But there were no tears on her face, just the haunted, calm expression of someone who never expected anything more from life and had never been given a reason to raise her low expectations.
