Getting settled

853 Words
It was nice to hear the kids splashing and laughing with each other when I walked out of the house after taking the first box in which so happened to have been the towels. I figured I could let them play around for a few more minutes, at least until their Uncle got her with the dogs and beds. Then I would have to drag them out to help us finish unpacking the vehicles for the night. I really wanted to get the beds up before it got too late that way we weren’t sleeping on the floor tonight. Not that the kids wouldn’t have been happy to camp out on the floor. They would turn it into a game or something. Walking back to the vehicle I go to grab another box, when lights hit my back. It was about time that he had gotten there. I didn’t think he was that far behind us. Turning towards the vehicle that had turned into the driveway thinking that it was Barrett with the rest of the stuff I had packed into our vehicle instead of the moving truck but turned out to be Erik’s vehicle. I swung my head back to the pond hoping that the kids hadn’t seen their dad’s car coming down the driveway. When I noticed they were still playing around I turned back towards Erik getting ready for the fight I knew was going to happen. “What are you doing here? I thought we had agreed that you would give us 2 weeks to settle in before you came here.” I asked as he came to a stop. “I have a right to see where my children are staying at.” He replied with the evil smile he has when he is doing something he knows will annoy me to no end. “I thought you said you checked it out last week.” Shaking his head as he got out of the car. “No, I lied. I wanted to see it with the family” “why are you making this harder on us than it has to be. We agreed to certain terms, you can’t just come here without me knowing about it first.” I could see that made him mad. He never did like it when I stuck up for myself. “You can’t tell me what I can or cant do. These are my children too and I have every right to see them when I choice too.” Shaking my head I walked past him saying “Then why didn’t you spend more time with them when we were all under the same roof.” Out of no where he grabbed my hair and yanked me back towards him. “You better watch how you talk to me.” I couldn’t believe that he had grabbed me by my hair. He had never shown me any physical harm before now. I didn’t understand why he was doing this now. At that moment Barrett started to pull in and Erik must of heard because he let me go and started walking to his car without saying a word. I stood there in complete shock of what just happened. Barrett must of seen what happened because he didn’t look happy when he got out of the car as Erik drove off. “What was he doing here?” Walking over to Barrett all I could do was shrug my shoulders. “Where are the kids at?” Barrett asked while letting the dogs out of the truck. “Oh they seen the pond and jumped in,” I replied as I greeted Axel and Bandit our two pit-bulls. “Have they seen the other little surprises you had me do before you started even packing,” he asked while grabbing boxes out of the truck. “We soon will find out.” I turned towards the house to drop off my boxes and get the kids to finally help.“Remington James, Kingston Winslow, Solene Jay, you three are supposed to be helping us out!” I yelled out as I went back for more stuff. I could hear them giggling as they ran back to us soaking wet. “”Look at you guys. Did you have fun”, Barrett asked. It always made me smile to watch the interactions of my kids and brother. He loved them unconditionally and they didn’t even understand how much. I hope one day that they do. He was the reason I was able to get my kids here safely, not worry about anything at all. Bonus part he wasn’t that far from us now. Just across the street. Kingston shock himself spraying us with water “Yeah, the water was great. I can’t wait to see what the house looks like.” “Well you guys are soaked so until you guys are dry enough to go into it, you will have to settle with glimpses of it, while you guys stack the boxes on the porch” I said to him.
