Chapter 12 Keir Keir stood behind his father’s throne, waiting for the arrival of the king with the other members of the Vondur court. It was his job to govern the court in his father’s absence—Keir’s least favorite task as the son of a king. Turlach Dagnan assumed the throne of Vondur more than a decade ago, yet Keir still didn’t think of himself as a prince. It was difficult to accept the role when everyone knew it wasn’t one that would last. There was no guarantee he would ever be king. Natural succession was rare in Vondur. The king could be usurped at any time. Keir remembered the day his father had killed the former king and taken his throne for himself, believing he could do a better job—and he had. Vondur had fared well enough under his rule, but Turlach wasn’t of a mind to end
