…
The entire place seemed bloody. The other girl who eliminated the girl used her blood to turn the lantern off. She made her way to the front with a primal look on her face.
Knowing I couldn’t be a part of it, I walked towards the girl’s body staring at her as she gasped for breath. My hands directed to her, rubbing her heard. “It’s fine,” I muttered. “You do not have to struggle or blame yourself. You can rest now.”
“M-my family, I promised them that I was going to make it.” she let out.
“A word will be sent out to them, you can rest now.” I said, my voice in a tone spelled with sympathy.
“T-Thank, you...” she trailed before closing her eyes.
“I’ll make your death worthwhile.” I said with a determined look. That minute, I took some of her blood putting some droplets on the lantern.
The flame began to burn out that instant. The last of it whoofed and with one last look at the dead girl, I began to make my way to the front. I needed to get to the finishing line.
That instant a wild cat came out from what seemed like a covered ground and some girl kicked it off with her boots. I looked to see the same girl I met on my way to this Kingdom. “You need to be mindful, there are traps they set!”
Just as she said it some girl got into one and the cat caught her leg biting and chewing off some flesh. She screamed as loud as her voice could carry.
“Follow my trail.” the girl advised.
“I’ll rather follow my own path.” I said. I couldn’t deny the fact that she saved me however, she left her partner behind when a panther chased them. That already gave a notion on the kind of person she was.
It only took a moment for the path to become confusing. It seemed to get mixed up and my traps were a little bit more, so I crossed. A bit to the trail she took. I didn’t make it obvious though.
Looking back most of the girls had already gotten in and the time was almost up. This made me use my Lycan speed. I crossed into the boundary.
A few moments after I did, the bell dinged. Time was up. That minute I watched as some guards came forward with their swords hanged around their waist. They then took the remaining girls back.
It seemed they were taking them home from what I saw.
“You should have accepted my help back there. Perhaps, you could have won faster.” the girl said.
“I do not see any reason I needed your help.” I muttered, with my chin up.
“You think?” she said.
“I helped you get rid of the panther. Still, you left me out there naked as the day I was born, you did the same to your partner.” I let out. “Do you not have any conscience?”
“It may look like I am heartless but none of it is what you think, I assure you.”
I stopped in my tracks with wonder. “What do you mean?”
“I’m sorry for leaving. I was terrified when you passed out because that was a first time, I’ll meet a creature like you. And about my partner, he wasn’t someone I knew, just a stranger with the same destination. He had given me permission to go ahead if something happened to him and it wasn’t in my capacity to save him.” she explained.
“Gather around ladies!” Lady Maria called out standing on a raised part of the room which seemed to be a stage. “We are about to announce the points. Shall we?” The girls nodded.
That moment she directed her hands to the signs written on the board ordering the guards to put it on display. Looking around I wondered what sort of insanity required one to breed a baby to gain power.
My mum told me of a similar story. She said what she had to do at each step of the way and of how mistakes cost some things dear to her. It meant I had to be wise.
Nynaeve had faith in me. So did Piper. My aunt, my grandma. I couldn’t fail them.
“Ten points for the first to the third!” Lady Maria exclaimed. Just as she said those words my eyes wandered to the girls, amidst them was the little girl who was said to be a fairy.
In her features were a look of confusion and I furrowed my brows at it.
“Five points for the rest that made it up till here.” Lady Maria added. “From what I can see, this batch is competitive. We just started yet you came this far.”
Came this far? I looked at the board only to see the number of the girls present in the room. We were about 18 in total and earlier, it had been 30.
The rest didn’t make it though.
“Any questions?” Lady Maria let out with curiosity on her face. I looked around that minute and someone raised her hand. It was the same girl we had left me the other day. “Your name and what district you’re from?”
“Lisa of the Communers district.” she said.
“What do you intend to ask, Lisa of the Communers district?” Lady Maria let out.
“Are we competing to be a breeder of an aristocrat to attain power?”
A look of astonishment covered Lady Maria’s face as she replied, “The Kingdom rules are not to be questioned. It is forbidden to speak ill of it. I’m letting it go because you’re from a different district and do not know the rules yet.”
“I must apologize for I overstepped,” Lisa said. I noticed it was a sarcastic tone. That alone made me wonder. Who was Lisa? Why was she here if she didn’t agree with the rules?
“That’s okay. Your assistants would show you your rooms. Make sure you are prepared for the next game.” In that final tone, Lady Maria walked out of the room.
