WHAT WE DON'T SAY

910 Words
The timer hit zero. Nothing exploded. No alarms. No punishment. Just… silence. Tobi frowned. “That’s it?” Ada shook her head slowly. “No. That’s worse.” Their phones buzzed again. 📱 ALLIANCE STATUS: UNSTABLE TRUST REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN LINK Tobi let out a breath. “So we’re… connected now?” Ada nodded. “Looks like it.” “Meaning if one of us fails—” “We both pay.” Tobi stared at the screen. The game wasn’t just pushing them together. It was tying them. Like a knot neither of them knew how to untangle. They started walking. Not side by side. Not apart. Just… close enough to feel it. That strange pull. “You really told someone?” Tobi said finally. Ada didn’t look at him. “Yes.” “Why me?” That made her pause. “It had to be someone who mattered,” she said quietly. Tobi blinked. “That’s not comforting.” “I didn’t say it to comfort you.” They reached the edge of the field. Students were starting to arrive now. Normal noise creeping back into the world. But for them… everything still felt off. Like they were playing a different version of reality. Tobi’s phone buzzed again. 📱 SHARED TASK INITIATED TASK 5: Protect your partner REWARD: +600 POINTS CONDITION: BOTH PLAYERS MUST SUCCEED PENALTY: ONE LOSES, BOTH SUFFER Tobi stared at it. Then laughed softly. “Protect you?” he said. “After everything?” Ada finally looked at him. And there it was again. Not strength. Not confidence. Something else. Something… real. “I didn’t want to hurt you,” she said. Tobi held her gaze. “You still did.” A beat passed. Then another. “I know,” she said. That was it. No excuse. No defense. Just truth. And somehow… That made it harder to stay angry. “Why does it feel like the game knows everything?” Tobi muttered. Ada didn’t answer immediately. When she did, her voice was quieter than before. “Because maybe it does.” Before Tobi could respond— A shout echoed across the field. “TOBI!” He turned. Kunle. Walking toward them. Slow. Confident. Smiling like he already knew how this would end. Tobi’s stomach tightened. “You know him?” Ada asked. “Yeah,” Tobi said. “And I don’t like that he’s coming here.” Kunle stopped in front of them. Eyes flicking between Tobi… and Ada. Taking everything in. “So it’s true,” he said. “What is?” Tobi asked. Kunle smirked. “You two are linked.” Ada stiffened. “How do you know that?” Kunle raised his phone. 📱 PLAYER DETECTED: ALLIANCE ACTIVE Tobi’s chest tightened. “You can see that?” Kunle shrugged. “Higher level perks.” Then his smile widened. “And trust me… alliances don’t last.” Tobi stepped forward slightly. “What do you want?” Kunle’s gaze shifted to Ada. Lingering. Too long. “I just came to see something,” he said. “To see what?” Kunle tilted his head. “Whether she’d choose you… or the game.” The words landed heavy. Tobi frowned. “What are you talking about?” Kunle didn’t answer. He just looked at Ada. Waiting. Ada’s phone buzzed. Loud. Sharp. She froze. “Tobi…” she said slowly. “Yeah?” “I just got a new task.” Tobi’s chest tightened. “What does it say?” She didn’t answer. Didn’t move. “Ada.” Finally… She turned her phone toward him. 📱 PRIVATE TASK: BREAK THE ALLIANCE REWARD: +800 POINTS BONUS: PROTECTION FROM NEXT PENALTY TIME LIMIT: 05:00 Tobi felt something drop inside him. Heavy. Final. Kunle laughed softly. “There it is.” Tobi looked at Ada. Waiting. Hoping. She didn’t speak. Didn’t look away. Just stood there… caught between two choices. “You don’t have to do it,” Tobi said. The timer started ticking. 📱 04:59… 04:58… Ada’s fingers tightened around her phone. “You don’t understand,” she said. “Then explain.” She shook her head. “I can’t lose again.” Tobi stepped closer. “And I can’t keep being your sacrifice.” That hit. You could see it. Feel it. The world around them faded into noise. Students. Voices. Movement. None of it mattered. Just this moment. “You think I want this?” Ada said, her voice cracking slightly. “You think I enjoy hurting you?” “Then stop,” Tobi said. Silence. The timer kept ticking. 📱 03:12… 03:11… Kunle leaned back slightly, watching like it was entertainment. “This is the game,” he said casually. “It doesn’t break you all at once… it makes you do it yourself.” Tobi ignored him. His eyes stayed on Ada. “Just don’t do it,” he said again. Ada looked at him. Really looked this time. Like she was trying to memorize something. “You’re making this harder,” she whispered. “Good.” Another second passed. Then another. And then— Ada stepped forward. Close. Closer than before. For a moment… it felt like everything else disappeared. “I’m sorry,” she said softly. Tobi’s chest tightened. “For what?” She didn’t answer. Her phone buzzed. 📱 02:01… Time was running out. Trust was breaking. And whatever this was between them— was about to be tested.
