FAULT LINES

Tobi didn’t reply immediately. The message sat there like a trap. “I didn’t have a choice.” Four simple words. Four heavy lies… or maybe the truth wearing a mask. He typed. What did you do? Then paused. Deleted it. Typed again. You used me? Deleted that too. His thumb hovered over the screen, caught between anger and something softer he didn’t want to admit. Before he could decide— 📱 NEW TASK AVAILABLE The notification sliced through his thoughts. TASK 3: Tell the truth you’re hiding REWARD: +300 POINTS PENALTY: EXPOSURE Tobi stared at it. “Exposure?” he muttered. “That’s not even a real penalty…” But even as he said it, something about the word stuck. Like it knew something about him. Something he hadn’t told anyone. Another message popped up. From Ada. Ada: Meet me. Tomorrow. Before school. Ada: We need to talk. No apology. No explanation. Just… that. Tobi clenched his jaw. “Yeah,” he whispered. “We definitely do.” 🌙 That Night Sleep didn’t come easy. When it did, it came wrong. Tobi stood in an empty street. Silent. Still. His phone buzzed. He looked down. 📱 TASK FAILED “What task?” he said out loud. The world around him flickered—like a bad connection. Then shadows began to move. Not people. Not exactly. Shapes. Watching him. Waiting. 📱 PENALTY: EXPOSURE ACTIVATED The shadows stepped closer. And suddenly— They started speaking. Voices he knew. Friends. Classmates. Fragments of conversations. Secrets. Things he had said… and things he had never said out loud. “Tobi isn’t as nice as he acts.” “He’s hiding something.” “He’s fake.” “Stop,” Tobi said, backing away. But the voices grew louder. Closer. “You like her, don’t you?” That one hit different. Sharp. Direct. Ada. “I don’t—” he started. But the words stuck. Because the truth was sitting right there, staring at him. 📱 TRUTH DETECTED The world shattered. Tobi woke up. Breathing hard. Sweat running down his face. His phone buzzed. 📱 TASK 3: IN PROGRESS He sat up slowly. “That wasn’t just a dream…” It felt too real. Too targeted. Then his phone buzzed again. A new message. Unknown number. Unknown: You should be careful who you trust. Tobi frowned. Who is this? The reply came instantly. Unknown: Someone who already lost. A chill ran through him. 🌅 The Next Morning The school field was quiet. Too quiet. Like the game had pressed pause on everything except what mattered. Ada was already there. Sitting on the low concrete edge, phone in her hand. Waiting. Tobi walked up slowly. “You made someone cry,” he said. No greeting. No softness. Just truth. Ada didn’t look surprised. She looked… tired. “I didn’t want to,” she said. “But you did it anyway.” She nodded once. Silence stretched between them. “Who?” Tobi asked. Ada hesitated. And that hesitation said more than any answer. “…You,” she said finally. Tobi blinked. “What?” “I used you,” she said, forcing the words out. “I told someone something about you. Something personal.” “What personal thing?” She looked at him. Straight into him. “That you like me.” The world didn’t explode. It didn’t shake. It just… tilted. Tobi laughed. Once. Short. Disbelieving. “You’re joking.” “I’m not.” He searched her face for any sign of a lie. But there wasn’t one. That was the worst part. “So you just… told someone that?” he said. “For points?” “No!” she snapped. “To avoid losing something worse!” “What could be worse than that?” She didn’t answer. And that silence was louder than anything. Tobi shook his head. “You could’ve told me.” “There wasn’t time,” she said quietly. “And I didn’t think it would hurt you like this.” That almost made him laugh again. “Of course it did.” For a moment… neither of them spoke. Then— 📱 NEW TASK ALERT Both their phones buzzed. Same time. Same sound. They looked down. TASK 4: Form an alliance REWARD: +400 POINTS CONDITION: Mutual trust required PENALTY: BOTH PLAYERS LOSE Tobi let out a dry laugh. “You’ve got to be kidding me.” Ada didn’t laugh. She looked at him. Carefully. Like stepping onto thin ice. “I know I messed up,” she said. “And I know you don’t trust me right now.” Pause. “But we can’t play this game alone.” Tobi stared at her. At the girl who had just exposed him. Embarrassed him. Maybe even used him. And yet… She stayed. She didn’t run. Didn’t pretend. Didn’t lie. His phone buzzed again. 📱 ALLIANCE TIMER: 00:59… 00:58… The game wasn’t waiting. Tobi exhaled slowly. “This is a bad idea,” he said. “I know.” “You might betray me again.” “I might.” That honesty hit harder than any lie. He looked at her one more time. Then tapped his screen. 📱 ALLIANCE REQUEST SENT Ada’s phone lit up. She didn’t hesitate. 📱 ALLIANCE ACCEPTED For a brief second… Nothing happened. Then both their screens glitched. Hard. 📱 ERROR TRUST LEVEL: INSUFFICIENT The air around them shifted. Like something had just noticed. And far across the field… Someone else’s phone lit up. Watching. 📱 PLAYER KUNLE: TASK UPDATED Tobi didn’t see him. Not yet. But the game had just added a new piece. And this one… wasn’t playing fair.
