Chapter 4
(Ava’s POV)
It felt like I was just floating in an abyss of blackness. I could hear everything around me, but I couldn’t say anything or move. I no longer hurt but I knew something was wrong. I could hear people talking near me just barely being able to understand what they were saying. I wasn’t sure but I think it was the man they called Rafe and the Doctor, I think her name is Michelle talking.
“Michelle, what’s wrong with her?” Rafe asked quietly.
“She’s in a real coma now Rafe, I haven’t injected her with anymore Thiopental since that first night. Like I said that night, this is the best way for her body to heal itself, we can only wait patiently until she is ready to awaken on her own.” There was a pause. “I had given her the higher end of the dosage hoping the “were” genes wouldn’t cut the time the drug usually takes to pass through the system in half, I didn’t consider the years of abuse she has suffered. She is not only physically weak from her injuries, but I would also stand to believe that she is mentally weak. At this point all we can do is wait patiently.”
“She’s been out for four days. Her birthday is tomorrow and since it’s also a full moon it was supposed to be her first shift. How can she shift if she is still in a coma?” Rafe asked with genuine concern.
“I don’t know Rafe. She may have to wait until her next birthday, we just have to leave everything in the hands of the Goddess and pray she will take care of Ava.”
I internally closed my eyes and drew in deep breaths. I wasn’t sure why these people were so concerned for me. It was so foreign, and I didn’t know how to react to it.
“They are good people.” Annalese said startling me.
“Annalese? What’s going on?” I asked desperately. Then I felt faintest nudge against my hand and opened my eyes. Looking at my surroundings I saw that I was in some sort of garden, there were all kinds of flowers around me with various colors. I felt the nudge again and glanced down at my hand. There sitting next to me was a gorgeous Silver and Red Wolf with glowing emerald eyes just like mine. “Annalese?”
The wolf nods and then says “Yes.”
“How is this possible?” I ask.
“You’re in a coma. I put you in one even after the drugs you were given wore off. You need to heal and as you heard the doctor say this is the best way for you to heal.”
“What happened?”
“I’m not exactly sure. Marcus attacked us again, but this time I don’t know the reason why. I think it had something to do with the man that brought us here.”
“Oh no, Oh no...” I started hyperventilating.
“Ava you need to calm down.”
“He’s going to hurt us just like Marcus did, you don’t know who he is.”
“I do actually but I can’t explain it.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“I can’t tell you.”
“Annalese,” I ground out.
“You will understand soon, you just need to focus on healing.” She paused. “Marcus paralyzed you Ava. That’s why you need to focus on healing.”
“So that’s why I couldn’t move.”
“Yes, now you need to listen to me Ava.”
I stared down at the wolf and nodded.
“Your birthday is tomorrow, but you aren’t healed enough to celebrate.”
“So, I won’t be able to shift?”
“No, I don’t know when you will wake up again, but our shift will have to wait. It’s not that big of a deal though sweetie, You’re safe with Rafe.”
“I don’t understand.”
“You will, everything will make sense when you wake up.”
---------------
(Rafe’s POV)
“It’s been two f*****g months Michelle!” I screamed pacing back and forth outside of Ava’s room.
“Don’t you think I know that!”
I turned and stared out the window. I tried controlling my anger, but it was hard, Gabriel was pacing in my mind with worry over our mate and it was starting to drive me insane. It has been two months since I brought Ava here. Two months since she has been in a coma. I was at my wits end at what I could do, spending every moment I could with her however I still had a pack to run. A pack that still didn’t know that I had found my mate, and that she was here. Taking a deep breath, I turned back to Michelle. “I have to leave tomorrow for the annual Alpha conference. I’m going to leave Darek here.”
“You know this is the one time that the Gamma’s are required to attend instead of the Beta’s.”
“I know Michelle, but with everything going on I need Darek here. He is my warrior head as well as my Gamma.” Pausing I take another calming breath. “I would feel better leaving here knowing that she is completely safe, and while I trust Matt with not only my life as well as hers, I need someone here just in case her family finds us and Darek is a better combat fighter than both Matt and myself”
Michelle nodded with understanding, everyone in the pack knew that even though I was the Alpha, my skill set wasn’t in combat but in torture, that’s how I had gotten my reputation as ruthless. After two months of watching Ava while in the coma a part of me wished that I had insisted that I deal with her family since she is my mate after all. But then again, I didn’t want those men anywhere near her even if they would have been far away from the main house in my prison cells.
Randolph and Marcus had officially been banished the day after I took Ava away from the Lotus Grove Pack and were now rogues. And from the rumors spreading they were gathering followers to attempt an attack on the pack to get Ava back. For reasons unknown they really wanted her. I feel like it has to do with more than they want their punching bag back, but I couldn’t figure out what.
“I understand.”
“You should be happy that your mate is staying here.” I said trying to get her to laugh, which it worked she let out a scoff then got a big smile on her face.
“Of course, I’m happy Darek is going to be staying here instead of going to the conference. But I also know how important it is for the Gamma’s to make their appearances at this one.”
“I’ll just be honest with them.”
“Are you sure that’s the best idea?”
“No, it probably isn’t, but Alpha Andrew will be there, and he’ll more than likely ask me about Ava. Even though you are sending weekly updates to Sinead about her.”
“You’re right,” Michelle replied. “Speaking of which I need to go in and do her daily physical therapy session.” Turning she opened the door but stopped and looked back at me before she entered the room. “Go for a run Rafe, you need to clear your head and a run has always helped with that.”
“That actually sounds like a great idea. I haven’t let Gabe out in awhile because I’ve been too focused on Ava and continuing my duties as Alpha.”
“Well then go, I’ll mind link you if anything happens.”
I dipped my head in a small nod to show her my thanks and then we both went our separate ways.
“Gabe?” I said to my wolf as I got outside and walked to the border of the trees surrounding the pack house.
“I’m here.”
“How would you feel about going on a run?”
He howled his excitement and I just smiled bring him forward so that he could shift. When we were in wolf form, I handed the reigns over to him and just let him work out his emotions by running freely through the forest. Not only was running aimlessly through the forest relaxing for me, since it gave me a little bit of peace from everything else going on, but it was also good and relaxing for Gabe since he needed to stretch his legs every once in a while.

(Unknown’s POV)
Two months Before (The day after Marcus’s and Randolph’s banishment)
“WHAT THE f**k DO YOU MEAN YOU LOST HER!” I screamed at the incompetent werewolf’s standing before me. “Do you realize how f****d everything is going to end up being if they figure out who she really is?”
Randolph nodded his head hanging low as he cowered at the rage in my voice.
“No, I don’t.” Marcus said hotly.
I sighed shaking his head, his father obviously has yet to tell him the full reason as to why they were saddled with Ava. “You haven’t told him the full story yet have you?” I asked Randolph disgust laced in my voice.
“No, I haven’t and frankly I’m not even sure myself why she’s so important. You came to me when she was a baby and asked me to take her. You are the one that dropped her off at the orphanage and made sure that no one wanted her until I could make it there with Maureen.”
“That child is the daughter of my enemy! And for my plan to work she can’t find out who she actually is until I know she is willing to be on my side!”
“And how exactly did you plan to do that?”
“By making her think she was my mate.”
“That’s not possible you’re a demon.”
“There is a potion I would take that would make her believe that she is mated to me, but it would only work if she hasn’t already found her mate. So, are you sure this Alpha Wolf isn’t her mate?”
“Very, he only came to get her according to Drew because their parents made an arrangement years ago.” Marcus spoke up.
“Good, then the plan still has some hope.” I said with a sickening smile spreading across my face. “Randolph, you know what you need to do.”

(Rafe’s POV)
I sighed as I got up from my seat on the private plane. This was going to be a long weekend; I couldn’t help but feel like something bad was about to happen. Things were the same with Ava, no change in her progress but there hadn’t been any recent improvements either. Debarking from the plane I saw that the car I had ordered was waiting for us.
“Alpha Wolf, Beta Miller welcome to Seattle.” The driver said as he snapped his fingers and some men came and took out bags from us.
“Thank you.” I replied as I got into the car. Once everyone was settled, we headed away from the airport. Looking at my phone I checked to see if Michelle had messaged me anything about Ava.
“We’ve only been away for a handful of hours.” Matt said.
“I know, but I can’t seem to shake this feeling that something bad is about to happen.”
“I feel it too, but I don’t know.”
Looking out the window I sighed and watched the scenery fly by. “Hopefully this weekend goes by quickly.”
“I hope so too.” Matt replied. “Hey.” He said causing me to tear my gaze away from the window and look at him.
“What.”
“She’s going to be fine; Michelle will let us know if there are any changes, big or small you know this. Now we need to focus on this conference.” He said and then handed me some folders to look over.
Deep down I knew he was right, but it didn’t stop me from worrying, she was my Mate for Goddess sake. How was I supposed to tamper down the emotions welling up inside of me? I had been waiting for her for seven years, I was just reaching the point in my life where I had given up on finding my Mate when I had found her, abused and broken. Taking a deep breath, I pushed the images of the night that I had found Ava out of my mind and tried to focus on what needed to be done this weekend while at this conference.
Things were going to be a little different this year since I had brought my Beta with me instead of my Gamma. This conference was held once a year so that each pack could show off their Gamma’s strengths. Some of the packs were like mine their Gamma was also their warrior head, but most their Gamma’s were their strategy advisors. It was initially started as a way for the packs across the nation to test the strength of a new Alpha and his Gamma, but over the years in evolved and now every Alpha was included to show their strengths.
We all were willing to help each other where we could, but obviously not give away too many of our secrets. It’s one thing to help a pack it was another to give them an advantage over you if you should ever turn out to be rivals.
I looked through the files as we got closer to our destination. When the driver announced that we would reach the hotel in less than ten minutes I handed the files back to Matt and he packed them away.
When we reached the entrance of the hotel and the driver got out to open our doors, I looked at Matt and said, “Say nothing about Ava unless we are directly asked. I don’t want anyone finding out that she is my Mate. I can’t shake the feeling that something bad is going to happen. And that it will happen because her and I are Mates.”
I didn’t wait for his reply as the driver had just opened my door I got out Matt following behind me and looked over at the hotel’s entrance, once again hoping that this weekend went by quickly.
