Where it all began
This is where it all began, on my 18th birthday, the day that shaped the rest of my life.
I stood before the ornate, full-length mirror in my room, admiring the intricate design of my sage-green dress. The fabric flowed elegantly, sparkling slightly in the light from the chandelier overhead. For tonight's grand celebration, I had a new gown specially made, along with other garments for an unknown purpose that Father had yet to reveal. As Rose, my devoted maid, finished curling my hair and expertly pinned a delicate flower hairpin into my bun, she took a step back, surveying her work. With a satisfied nod, she quietly excused herself, leaving me alone with Ashvin, my steadfast personal guard and childhood friend.
I turned my gaze toward him, my heart fluttering with anticipation. “How do I look, Ashvin?” I asked, catching his eye in the mirror’s reflection.
His cheeks flushed slightly, and he looked away momentarily, collecting his thoughts. “You… you look beautiful, Your Highness,” he replied, his voice soft, almost as if he feared drawing attention to himself.
“Do I?” I questioned, my curiosity piqued. I twirled lightly, watching the dress swirl around me in the mirror. Ashvin’s lips curled into a small, affectionate smile as he watched me, though his expression quickly shifted when Rose spoke outside of the room, announcing that Father, the Emperor, had summoned me.
At her words, a shiver of excitement and trepidation coursed through me. I took a deep breath and stepped out of my room, Ashvin trailing behind, always protectively positioned near my side as we made our way through the grand corridors of the palace. When we reached the imposing throne room, I felt my heart race. I prepared to face my father, the most powerful man in the land.
With a flourish, Enuch Azu, my father’s trusted advisor, announced my presence. I stepped forward, my palms slightly clammy, and found myself standing before my father, the Emperor.
“Dania, my dear!” Father exclaimed, his expression lighting up with warmth, as was customary. He gestured for me to approach him. “You have reached the milestone of 18 years. What is your heart’s desire on this significant day?” Setting down his ornate cup of tea, his gaze bore into mine, filled with fatherly affection.
With a smile that mirrored his own, I responded, “For this year, I would like to go on an outing, and I would also like a new horse, Father.” The prospect of adventure bubbled within me as I spoke, and I felt a sense of freedom at the thought of riding out into the vast kingdom.
“If that’s what you wish, then it is granted. Your horse will be ready for you by tomorrow morning.” The delight in my father's voice matched the twinkle in his eyes as I beamed with joy and expressed my gratitude.
“Thank you, Father… but I sense that you summoned me for another purpose,” I said, shifting my gaze to meet his. The air crackled with anticipation as I awaited his next words.
“Haha! You are correct, Dania, my dear. It is time I reveal what lies ahead for you. You are to embark on a quest, but heed my words: this will not be a simple journey. The path you take may extend over a year or even longer,” he stated, his tone shifting to one of gravity.
My heart skipped a beat, apprehension swirling within me. What could require such a long duration?
“You are to seek Ria's guidance, the moon goddess’s sacred power orb. It has been fractured into five pieces, scattered across the vast expanse of our land. You must retrieve them to restore your power, for this orb is essential for you to become the next ruler.”
I felt a lump rise in my throat as the enormity of the task sank in. “The locations of these pieces are unknown to me, but the ancient prophecy tells of their concealment within each of the nations.”
Father gazes at me with a serious expression. "Take Ashvin along on your journey," he instructs, his voice steady. "I have meticulously prepared everything you will need: a set of warm clothes to shield you from the elements, a sturdy horse to carry you across the vast lands, a spell book filled with ancient incantations to guide and protect you, and provisions abundant enough to sustain you until you reach the bustling capital of Paceum."
I nod, my eyes gazing at Ashvin before returning to look at Father.
"In addition, I will grant you access to a money portal, allowing you to draw funds as needed. However, exercise caution during your travels to avoid falling victim to thieves. I've also enlisted the expertise of the chief mage, who will assist you along the way. He is set to meet you both in the heart of Paceum."
"I understand, father. Thank you for the insight." I smile and bow. You've grown into a stunning young lady. I shall see you tonight. You are dismissed." Father smiles kindly as Ashvin and I exit to walk the corridors to the garden.
"What do you think, Ashvin? Of the quest? Paceum is your home, right?" I sit in the grass looking up at him. "Yes, that's my home country. I think the quest is needed for your ascension to the throne, your highness, therefore I will protect you." Ashvin gave a semi-serious look, I smiled warmly. “Then we should pack, don’t you agree Ash?”
