Blurb

She had loved him quietly and foolishly since college. When she finally got her chance with him, she believed she’d won the greatest prize of all: the man who had once been out of reach.

But marriage to Evander Cole isn’t what she imagined. To the world, she isn’t even his wife. She is just the woman who lives in his shadow. And when his ex-fiancée returns, the fragile warmth between them freezes overnight. Every smile he once gave her now belongs to another—even the promise he made shatters in silence.

Tired of waiting for love that never comes, Seraphine files for divorce.

But Evander refuses. He doesn’t understand why she wants to leave. He doesn’t even realize he’s the one breaking her heart.

As secrets from the past get revealed, which are the truth behind his ex’s family, his own mother’s death, and the lies binding their marriage, Seraphine learns that some wounds run deeper than love.

And when Evander discovers she was carrying his child all along, the child he lost because of his own neglect, it’s too late to undo the damage.

Now, he’ll do anything to win her back.

But she’s no longer the same woman who once begged for his love.

1. A strange woman
Seraphine walked hurriedly out of the company into her car. Today was a special day, and she didn't plan on messing things up. She stopped by the supermarket to get some things before heading home. She was worried about her lateness, but after contacting her husband's assistant, who informed her they were still at the meeting, she was relieved that she had more time to carry out her plans. Seraphine prepared his favorite meals and made his favorite juice too. While arranging the spoons on the table, she couldn't help but smile. She remembered the beautiful portable box she had found inside his suit earlier yesterday that housed a pair of diamond-shaped earrings. What other occasion were the earrings for if not to be presented tonight? Something that she really liked. He must be as excited as she was. After she was done, she cleared the table and cleaned everything else. She had given her workers the day off. It was her anniversary after all. Something romantic and hot might happen after delivering the good news to him. She held tightly to the small bag next to her. She adjusted her clothes, checked her makeup, and then crossed her legs. While she was waiting, he arrived, the keys dangling between his fingers. She watched her husband walk in and couldn't resist the bubbling spirit within her. She has loved this man so much since high school. She considered herself lucky to be married to him. She stood up to welcome him. “You cooked?” Evander asked, eyeing the woman in front of him, who was slightly overdressed for the night. She nodded, excitement dancing in her heart. “You…” he glanced at the meals and then at her, “You shouldn't have bothered.” The smile dropped off her face partially, but his next words convinced her that he cared. “You must be tired. Doing this is stressful.” The vibrant smile came back. “No, you don't have to worry. Come and take a seat.” She helped him sit at the table and served their meals while speaking. “Today is such a wonderful day. I just want to keep this special moment in my heart forever.” Evander paused, rubbed his mouth briefly with the back of his palm, and squeezed his brows. “What day is it? Why is it special?” Seraphine blinked, shock appearing on her face for a few minutes at her husband's question. “You've got to be joking, right?” She chuckled nervously. But seeing him shake his head made her sink. Her shocked expression was quickly replaced by disbelief. Her body shivered as she swallowed in disbelief. “You've forgotten that today's our anniversary?” She finally put forward to him. Evander’s eyes slowly opened at the realization. “There's no way you are not aware. You even prepared earrings for me.” She pushed further, unable to accept what was happening. Evander rubbed his palms underneath his table as he peeked at her under his lashes nervously. “Earrings?” But before Seraphine could reply, the doorbell rang, interrupting mid-way. Evander pushed the chair and stood up quickly, excusing himself from the awkward atmosphere at the table. When he opened the door, a petite, beautiful woman showed up. She was wearing a red gown that only stopped at her thighs with a pair of black pointy heels. Her hair was styled to one side, giving her seductive appearance a chance to skyrocket. She smiled immediately after her eyes dwelled on Evander. *Aren't you ready yet?” She said with a sweet voice, “I'm terribly starving.” She added. At this point, Seraphine was standing behind them, a few feet away. Her face paled at the intimacy between them. But not only that, the earrings!! The earrings she was wearing. They looked similar to the ones Evander had bought that she thought were for her. Or was she overthinking this? The company probably produced more than a pair, right? Her appearance must have finally been noticed because the young lady called her out. “You must be his wife.” She said, not hiding the disdain in her tone. “Nice to meet you. I'm Chelsea. I just got divorced today, so I asked Evan to have dinner with me to celebrate. I'll borrow him tonight, thank you!” She said and held his hand before smiling widely at him. Seraphine gulped anxiously and took a step forward. Her eyes moved to her husband, who was looking everywhere else but her side. “B-but it's our anniversary, Evan. Where…?” “Excuse me, Seraphine. I hate to do this, but I need to. I'll be back before you know it, okay?” And just like that, he was gone. The loud bang of the door shattered her hope. Her legs weakened. She only accepted this realization slowly when she heard the car zoom out of the compound. Her fists tightened as she slowly dragged her feet to the couch amidst confusion and disappointment. Who was Chelsea? How was she related to her husband? What was going on between the two of them? With sad eyes, she brought out the pregnancy results from her pocket and stared at the written positive words on it for a while. If only he had waited, he would have gotten the best news of his life. “Maybe I shouldn't tell him yet.” She whispered and folded before putting it back into the innermost compartment of her bag. First, she needed to get to the root of this. She needed to know who this strange woman was and why she needed her husband to keep her company. …. “Liar!” Seraphine grumbled in her heart as she entered the company. “He said he would be back soon, but I was alone in the empty room all night. Do I not mean anything to him? Is our anniversary meant to be joked with?” She mumbled as she poured herself a cup of coffee to sober up. One thing she didn't like doing was bringing personal issues and displaying personal emotions at work. “Good morning, Seraphine! What a beautiful day it is!” A young lady yelled partly as she sashayed her way towards Seraphine. Her voice saved Sera from her thoughts. She was Sera’s one and only nest friend. They hugged each other, and Ashley took the tool to whisper. “It's today! The new design director will be announced! I'll tell you in secret that everyone thinks it will be you.” They released each other from the embrace. Ashley turned, “Can't you see how dressed I am? It's because of you that I even spent that much money on my makeup. I have to look this good for such a wonderful occasion.” Sera chuckled, seeing the display of excitement on her behalf. Yes, today was the day to announce the design director. Although she could be said to be too forward or proud, Sera believed that this position belonged to her. It wasn't only because Evan was her husband and had promised her this. But because her work spoke for itself. While everyone was still talking, a new notification popped up in the company's group chat. Ashley hurriedly checked her phone. Sera was a bit nervous to check hers and only awaited the news. She was so calm — a sign that she was ready to take on the responsibilities of the design director. But what happened next melted her, “The new director is Chelsea?” Ashley shouted, her brows shot up, and the space between them quickly creased before she flicked her head around, her inquisitive eyes landing on Sera. “Who the f**k is Chelsea?” she asked.
