CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO The parched, cracked desert was seared by the blazing sun. The only shade for miles was a stand of hecho with arms thrust up, as if to support the sky. Cory, sweat dripping from his face, was standing in what little shade was available while watching Poet, who was swaying in the saddle. Only the ropes tied to his body kept him erect. "Cory, could you help me down, please? We've been riding two days and two nights, and I can't stand the pain anymore. I have to lie down for a little while, then we can push on."
