Chapter Eight

Chapter Eight:

“ I’m soaking wet!” Leroy complained while cautiously walking along mud and grass. “ Where are we going anyway?” Piatt turned to him and paid no heed as he continued to lead deeper into the trees. Both men carried duffel bags. Piatt carried to effortlessly while, Leroy struggles with one. He stopped himself as he was about to speak, it is because he saw, Piatt’s look at him. The air changed between them, and Leroy accepted his fate and followed Piatt as they went further, the road became less and less visible, until they were surrounded jungle flora and white noise. And occasionally, the monstrously load croaks of frogs and the human-like cackling of birds, which became more intense as they went deeper. As if the eyes of the jungle are watching them and laughing. Enjoying the comedy, the fauna of the jungle grew quiet, as the pair made their way to a clearing that cuts through the jungle like a dagger of stone.

The rain didn’t stop, it grew more restless. The winds howled stronger, and without the protection of the trees, the winds pushed against Leroy and Piatt, strong enough for both men to brace themselves. As if someone or something is trying to tell them; turn back.

There it is, the imposing pyramid hidden in the middle of no where. On the faces of the pyramid, three, dauntingly steep stairs extenuate the sides of the pyramid. On-top a wide flat area, rectangular stone protruding in the middle. From where they are looking it is almost impossible to see what’s on the top. But, in front of them is this ominous cavern, right at the face of the pyramid, ornamented with intricate stone carvings that resembles some sort of a serpent or an eel. The pyramid in its decrepit state still remains a mysterious beauty, yet to be eaten by nature. The trace of war, between ancient ruins and mother nature can be seen, by the root networks lining through the crevasses of the stone.

“ We’re here.” Piatt uttered while staring with awe at the stoned-beast.
