Chapter Six: Testing the Edge

841 Words
The stars hung low over the Louisiana night, their faint light shimmering against the quiet, open fields outside Natchitoches. Kaine had driven miles away from town, down dirt roads lined with old oaks and empty pastures. He needed solitude for what he was about to do—a chance to push his armor and his powers without worrying about prying eyes. The truck rumbled to a stop in a clearing surrounded by tall grass. Kaine killed the engine and stepped out, the night air crisp against his skin. He rolled his shoulders, feeling the weight of his armor in its compact backpack form. Tonight was about control, precision, and discovery. “You ready for this, Pred?” Kaine asked, his voice low but edged with anticipation. “Born ready,” Pred replied through the Smile Chip, his tone as cocky as ever. “The question is, are you? Or do we need to stop for a warm glass of courage?” Kaine smirked. “Watch and learn.” He closed his eyes, focusing on the mental connection through the Smile Chip. He envisioned the armor shifting, expanding, and locking into combat mode. A familiar hum vibrated against his back as the backpack began to unfold, sleek panels sliding into place with a precision that was almost organic. In seconds, the armor enveloped him, its matte black surface gleaming faintly in the moonlight, crimson highlights glowing like embers. “Smooth as hell,” Kaine muttered, flexing his arms to test the fit. The armor felt like a second skin, its systems humming quietly in sync with his movements. “Not bad for a rookie,” Pred quipped. “Now let’s see if you can actually fly without face-planting into a tree.” Kaine took a deep breath and engaged the flight systems. The anti-grav thrusters that cover his suit come to life with a low, controlled hum that sent a ripple through the grass around him. He crouched slightly before launching into the air, rocketing upward like a bullet. For a moment, the force of acceleration made his stomach lurch, and he struggled to keep his balance. The world below blurred into streaks of green and black as he climbed higher, the wind howling around him. “s**t, s**t, s**t!” Kaine yelled, his voice distorted through the modulator. “Relax!” Pred barked. “Let the suit stabilize. It’s built for this!” Kaine gritted his teeth, adjusting his posture and trusting the armor to do its job. Slowly, the thrusters leveled out, and he found himself gliding effortlessly above the landscape. The rush of air against the armor was exhilarating, the view from above both breathtaking and humbling. “Okay,” Kaine said, a grin spreading beneath the helmet. “This is… f*****g incredible.” “Don’t get cocky,” Pred warned. “You’re just hovering. Let’s see what this baby can really do.” With a mental command, Kaine pushed the thrusters to full power. The armor responded instantly, propelling him forward at blinding speed. The wind pressure was intense, but the suit’s systems absorbed the stress, keeping his body perfectly protected. He flew faster, the HUD displaying his speed: Mach 1, Mach 2, Mach 3. “Let’s hit Mach 5,” Kaine muttered, the excitement in his voice undeniable. “Don’t say I didn’t warn you,” Pred replied, but there was a hint of pride in his tone. The suit silently roared to maximum output, and Kaine broke through the sound barrier, his surroundings a blur of motion and light. He looped through the air, weaving between clouds and skimming just above the treetops. It felt like freedom, like power in its purest form. “Holy s**t, Pred,” Kaine said, laughing as he performed a tight spiral. “I’m a damn missile.” “More like a very stealthy missile,” Pred said. “No radar has picked you up so far. Air traffic control thinks it’s a glitch.” Kaine tested the stealth system, activating the armor’s active camouflage. The crimson highlights dimmed, and the armor blended seamlessly with the night sky. Pred monitored local networks, ensuring no one had detected Kaine’s flight. “You’re invisible,” Pred confirmed. “Radar, thermal, visual—completely undetectable. If I didn’t know better, I’d call you a ghost.” Kaine slowed his flight, hovering above the empty fields below. He felt like a kid in a candy store, the possibilities of the armor sparking ideas and ambitions he hadn’t dared to consider before. But this wasn’t just for fun. It was preparation for the war he intended to wage. “All systems green,” Pred reported. “What’s next, Captain?” Kaine smirked beneath the helmet, descending slowly back to the ground. The armor adjusted for a smooth landing, absorbing the impact with ease. He stood there for a moment, letting the silence of the night envelop him. “Next?” Kaine said, his voice low and determined. “We take this show on the road.”
