Chapter 2

Grace “Good morning ladies and gentlemen, we will be landing at McAllen Miller International Airport in less than ten minutes. Please return to your seats and get ready for landing. Thank you.”   I look out the window wondering if it was worth coming back to the states or not. Will I feel my magic come back or will I still feel drained? Unlike what most people think and unlike Trent and Inara not all witches can talk to their witch. We can feel them but we can’t always talk to them, I’m not that can’t talk to mine. I feel her more than most but I was not gifted with talking with her. I was also gifted with being a stronger witch and one of the few who can see the past and the future.   We are about to land in Texas. Even though I grew up and lived in Virginia my whole life I have never traveled at all. When Matty and I were trying to figure out where to go the first time we came up with a game. We placed a world map on the wall, closed our eyes, and threw a dart at it. Whatever country it landed on we would grab the map for that country and the other person would close their eyes and throw the dart. Once we figured out the state, we would look at all the landmarks and must-see places and pick a few to see ourselves. I can’t say it’s the most affordable way of traveling because we have backtracked a few times, but it gives a different way to just be free and live.   That’s how we ended up in Texas. Our first stop is Rio Grande in West Texas to see the Big Bend. From what we read Big Bend’s ecology encompasses over 1,200 plants and nearly as many species of birds and reptiles. It also seems to have scenic canyon-laced views of the Rio Grande, the river that bisects the United States from Mexico. The website also said that the Rio Grande has formed trestles through the Chihuahuan Desert over hundreds of thousands of years to furnish tourists with beautiful vegetation-lined vistas of surrounding canyons, arroyos, and creeks. It sounds like a place that has a long history and is deeply connected to the past. Present, and future, which is what I might need to kick my magic back into gear. “Matty wake up. We are going to be landing soon.” I gently poke at her face. “f**k off brat. Can’t you see I’m sleeping, you annoying person?” I roll my eyes and leave her be. She still has some time and if she gets mad at me for not waking her up sooner well it’s on her not me, I tried. “Ladies and gentlemen, we are about to descend for landing at McAllen Miller International Airport. Please place your seats in an upright position and buckle your seatbelts. The time is ten thirty-four in the morning and it is currently sunny out at a steamy hundred degrees Fahrenheit. Please make sure to remain seated until told otherwise. Thank you.” “Okay, Matty, time to get your butt up. We are about to land.” I tell her in a more stern voice as I start to shake her a little till I see her one eye open a little bit. “Matty don’t you dare tell me no. I see that eye open now get up before they yell at you to put that seat up again.” She groans as she stretches before putting the seat up and locking her seatbelt and leaning over me to look outside.  “Hey Grace, do you think we will go to Virginia? What if I’m the king’s mate?” She asks me excitedly. I turn to see her eyes showing so much hope. I want to tell her maybe but I know what happened to his mate. She ran, so I shrugged instead and turned to look outside again. ---------- “The heat girl. The heat.” Matty complains causing me to let out a small chuckle. “Don’t you laugh at me. I know it’s a dry heat and all, but it will be hell on my hair!” She screeches at me. “Just do a little voodoo on it and don’t think about it. You are the queen at that.” I say while I roll my eyes and head to the parking area where our rental car is.  “Right! I could do that. Why didn’t I think of that? Ugh, this is crazy. Hey, a question for you.” I turned my head a little to look at her not wanting to stop, the heat was making me want a shower. “Will you let me drive?” Her eyes once again showed hope. I almost tripped before turning her and telling her no. “I don’t want to die today. We both know how hard it is for you to drive in your own country, I don’t want to even think about how scary it will be in a place that does everything differently than yours.” I laugh and start walking again hearing her mumble something behind me. “So I know we do the throw the darts and go to that place and somehow we never have come to the states before but I have to admit that this time it felt different, it felt like we had to come to the states. Did you now feel the pull when the darts were released?” Matty asked me while we were getting into the car, making me pause from turning it on for a second or two.  “I can’t say that I felt anything but you know my magic has been low and for some reason not wanting to come back as it should. You must have felt something I couldn’t because of that, that is if it did happen.” I replied as I backed out of the parking spot and started to pull onto the roadway. “Time to get my magic back.” I mutter to myself but Matty hears me. “We can only hope coming here helps you. I still think once you meet your mate everything will come back to you.” Luke “You better have a reason for leaving in the middle of all this s**t to run after someone who clearly doesn’t want you!” I hear my baby sister Inara yell at me as soon as I pull up to my home. I roll my eyes at her and walk up the stairs. I need a shower and a good rest. “Oh no, you do not.” Inara growled at me. “You better stop and explain to me what’s going on. I needed you here but you left me. You left me to watch them and you left your nephews and nieces. No calls or texts, do you know how much we missed you? Do you know how scared I was that something happened to you? I was scared that I would lose my brother again after I just found him.” Her voice breaks at the end and I stop in my tracks. Guilt hits me when I turn around to see tears running down her face. “I’m sorry.” I say with a sigh. I walked up to her and pulled her into a hug and for some reason, it felt like that’s what I needed. I broke down and cried on my little sister’s shoulder in the open where anyone could see me. “When she left me I didn’t think about anything else, I just ran after her. I should have thought of you but my heart felt broken. I can’t explain it to you right now just please know I will and I hope you will be on my side when it is needed.” I know she has a lot of questions but I’m not ready to answer them just yet. Not till I have Grace next to me. I feel her sigh and return my hug.  “You sink.” She says while sniffling from crying, causing me to chuckle. “I know sis, I was headed up to my room to get a shower when you stopped me.” I can’t help but chuckle when she pulls away and hits my shoulder showing me away. I shake my head and head back up to my room but before I get there I stop and turn down the hall to Grace’s room.    I need to find her. There are so many things I need to tell her and I can’t help but want to be near her and touch her and keep her safe. I don’t think she even knows of everything that can hurt her in this world and not all are inhuman, regular humans are crazy and capable of anything. I take a shower in her room not caring to get dressed before I laid in her bed that still smells like her and fell asleep.
