Jayda Reyes didn’t do drama. She thrived on control—on the track, in the hallways, and especially in her own life. So when she spotted the new girl striding into Southview High with sunlight in her smile and a reckless spark in her eyes, Jayda’s carefully balanced world tilted.
The first encounter was brief, almost accidental. Jayda was heading to her locker when a flash of chestnut hair and a laugh she couldn’t ignore collided with her shoulder.
“Oh! Sorry, I wasn’t—” the girl said, steadying herself. Her eyes were wide, golden-brown, and unapologetically curious.
“No worries,” Jayda muttered, instinctively stepping back. Her heart, however, didn’t get the memo.
“I’m Layla,” the girl said, extending a hand that was more confident than any student Jayda had ever met.
“Jayda,” she replied, shaking it. Her grip was firm, her touch electric.
Something about Layla made Jayda feel exposed in the best and worst ways. She wanted to retreat, but her feet stayed planted as if rooted to the spot. There was a warmth, a daring danger that clung to Layla like perfume—sweet, unavoidable, and maybe a little reckless.
By lunchtime, Jayda realized that Layla had become impossible to ignore. She moved through the cafeteria with a presence that drew people in, but her eyes always found Jayda, once, twice, lingering just long enough to make her pulse stutter.
Jayda’s ex, someone she thought she’d left behind months ago, noticed too. There was a flash of possessiveness in his gaze, sharp and threatening. Jayda didn’t need to look back to know that trouble was brewing.
Still, when Layla plopped down across from her at the corner table, smiling like she’d already won, Jayda felt something she hadn’t felt in a long time: anticipation.
“Mind if I sit here?” Layla asked, tilting her head in that infuriatingly charming way.
“I… guess not,” Jayda replied, her voice steadier than she felt.
“Cool,” Layla said. “So… you run?”

Layla’s grin was teasing, but there was a genuine admiration in her eyes that made Jayda’s chest tighten. And just like that, the spark was lit. Jayda knew it was dangerous—her carefully constructed life had little room for chaos—but something about Layla promised she might want the fire anyway. By the end of the day, Jayda’s locker had become a battlefield of emotions. Excitement, anxiety, curiosity—and an unmistakable pull she couldn’t ignore. Every glance from Layla felt like a small jolt, a secret current between them, thrilling and terrifying all at once. As she jogged home that afternoon, replaying the encounter over and over in her mind, Jayda realized one thing: whatever this was, it wasn’t going to stay hidden for long. And maybe, just maybe… she didn’t want it to.
