Chapter One
If for a moment I had imagined that my almost perfect life was going to turn around for the worse, then maybe I would have tried something a little different. I stood behind my mate who had chosen me four years ago with hot tears running down my cheeks. He made a vow that come rain, come shine; as long as he had chosen me to be his mate, I was going to stand by him as his Luna. But things had taken a drastic change. Here he was gaping at this beautiful blonde girl in his presence as though he had never seen anyone as stunning as her. What did I expect? She was his mate, and I was just available. If anyone were to be held accountable here, it should be the moon goddess. The moment this beautiful girl ran into his arms, I saw his eyes light up like something was reawakened inside of him. I couldn’t hold back the tears anymore, and they gushed freely like they were trying to make up an ocean. “Excuse me,” I murmured, but I was too invisible to be noticed or even heard since they were so engulfed in each other's arms. I turned around and scampered out of the scene as quickly as I could. I needed to breathe fresh air; I could feel my heart cramping hard against my chest. The moment I got outside, the harsh wind grazed my face and didn’t make it any better; even the wind wasn’t happy with me as I took in a deep breath. So this was finally the end of the road for me; my perfect life was snatched away from me without any prior notice. If I had known attending this function would result in this, I would never have stepped foot in here. At the very least, if Lesley had informed me earlier that he had found his mate, it wouldn’t have hurt as much as it did now, seeing them so engrossed in each other. “Elenor?” I heard Lesley call out to me in his normal gentle voice. I quickly wiped off my tears as he approached my side. “Elenor…” “Tell me, Lesley, what happens to us now? What happens to the promises? Am I now going to be rejected?” I interjected as I turned to face him. I don’t know why we ever did this to ourselves; maybe we were just tired of waiting for our fated mates that we thought we would never find them. But I had thought about this in the past and made up my mind that I was going to choose Lesley in the end if it ever came to that. “This changes nothing, Elenor. I chose you, and I’d do it again. I love you, Elenor; always remember that.” Lesley blurted out. I stared at him, trying to find an iota of truth in his words, but I could feel the shift. Something had changed in him. “I can’t stop you, Les; if you want to be with her, you can. Some of us are lucky while some are unlucky.” I stated, and his face curled into a frown. “All I want is you, Elenor.” He murmured and I feigned a smile. He didn't sound as firm as he usually did in the past; he was unsure and didn't even believe the words he said. “She’s your fated mate; no one competes with that, and it’s okay to want it. I need to go home now. I think I deserve some rest after all of this.” I muttered, and I started to head for the gate. “You know, I really can't leave now. I’ll ask Charles to take you home. I promise to be there as soon as I can. Will you be okay, my love?” He asked, and I ignored him, letting out a sigh. If it were in the past, he would never let me go alone, especially not when I am feeling this low. “Not too long, Beta Charles arrived, and we made our way toward the car. I saw the girl curled up in Lesley’s space, and the glow in their face made my heart churn. I quickly warded off thoughts of them from my mind as I averted my gaze, quickly hopping into the car. “We can go.” I managed to let out softly, and Charles immediately turned on the ignition, and we drove off. I noticed Charles’ eyes fixed on me momentarily through the rearview mirror. “Got something to say; say it already,” I murmured, and he shuddered. “You know he is going to make her his Luna, right? I mean, he has to. If he goes against this law and makes you his Luna, a huge calamity will befall the pack, and no one wants such tragedy.” He says calmly, and for once I want to be selfish. I open my mouth to speak, but no words are formed. Even though we knew it was just a superstitious belief, what were the odds? No one was ready to risk it. As soon as we arrived at the packhouse, I ran to our shared room and quickly hit the shower; hopefully, it did something to wash my pain away. A few minutes later, I was out of the shower and fell onto the bed like a log of wood, trying to fall asleep, but all I could do was turn and turn as a lot ravaged my mind, causing me to lose sleep. Was he going to reject me? Just as I was about to give in to the sweet melodies of sleep, I heard Lesley's deep and husky voice, which mainly showed up when he was often excited. His laughter peered through the air of the hallway. I climb out of bed before my ears are ushered by a female’s voice. “You are so charming and funny at the same time. Alpha Lesley O’Neil.” She says with a slight chuckle. “Just call me Lesley,” I heard him say, and the pain in my chest returned more intense this time. I held my chest in a bid to slow down my fast-beat heart as tears began to roll down my cheek. “No one dares call him by his name; we were only a few that were allowed to, which includes his family and me, and now all of a sudden, he lets her? Even Beta Bruce or Gamma Jayden weren’t allowed to call him by his name. Some minutes later, the room door flung open, and I wiped my tears as I flashed a smile, which he could tell was fake but went with it anyway. “She’s here?” I asked in a whisper. I watched as he nervously ran his hand through his head out of frustration. “Her parents and mine wouldn't let me leave without her, so to avoid their drama, I decided it was best to bring her with me. I hope that doesn't make you uncomfortable; if it does trouble you, I will have her moved to the guest quarters and...” “No, no, Lesley. I'm fine; she's your mate.” I interrupted with a sad smile. “Besides, I should be the one moving to the guest quarters,” I concluded, and he frowned. “I want you here with me always.” He murmured, placing a light kiss on my cheek before heading for the bathroom. I lay quietly in bed, trying not to overthink the situation as I waited for him to join me. Soon he was done, and he got into bed with me, wrapped his arm around my tiny waist, and pulled me closer to himself. “I will take care of everything, okay? Elenor, I do not want you to leave me; I'm crazy in love with you.” He assured me, and I heaved a deep sigh, then gently gave in to the sweet humming of the birds as I faded into sleep, but when I woke up in the middle of the night, Lesley wasn't by my side as he had promised to always be. I scanned the room, and my brows furrowed in anger as I climbed out of bed. Taking one last glance at the room, I headed out to look for him. As I walked down the hallway, I was halted in my tracks by his hushed voice. I followed the trace to the balcony to find Lesley and his fated mate, laughing and being lost in their conversation. I stood there for a while numb and immovable for a while before turning to take my leave. I ran as fast as I could before my tears could no longer take it and began to drop like running water. It was clear, I had lost him; I was going to be a reject, had he suddenly forgotten? Now, I would have to live with this pain all alone, and he would have a happy ending with his fated mate.
